What a tit.....

.....I am. Well, as I might have mentioned on here I crashed the GT6 a couple of months back.

What I neglected to tell you was that I was filming myself at the time. I had got a camera to wear on my cycle helmet to bore my friends with when out on the MTB (£12 e-bay, right value as you will see by the quality of the vid in the crash), but thought, hey lets get some velcro and stick it on my dashboard and film myself driving like Steve McQueen as I will look like a right dude when I load that onto YouTube.......

Fucksticks.

That's up there with the legendary

clip.

Unfortunate, but funny nevertheless.

DOH! I did that in a Sierra 2.1 once, but managed to drift into it, and the road was a bit wider. Got a thumbs up from the Postie on his bike coming the other way. I had to stop just down the road to gather my thoughts..... and check my pants.

LOL! I just slapped my forehead watching that!

To be fair it's easily done and your not the first or the last to do it! I done it on a roundabout years ago in my old Mk 4 Escort, Luckly it was 11pm at the time so no traffic and i didn't hit anything, still shit me up though!

Posted

Lol sorry dude. That road looked quite bad though, with lots of blind crests.

I had the rear my Silvia step-out on me twice. Shit me up both times. Fucked bushes will do that...

your not the first or the last to do it!

That is exactly what the farmer whose fence I went through said. Apparently I was the 6th in as many months.

Surprisingly I did not even shit myself when it was happening, was just going 'Typical when I have the camera on' in my head. hence the lack of swearing in the film.

Many LOLs from my mates who I had told 'I am going to film myself in the GT6 tomorrow morning'. Ballhang.

Ah, bad luck Imp, car not too fukd?

Must say - sounds good!

wow, guess it sounds worse than it was then from the minimal damage comments.

Got a link to the cameras, looks like a good bit of kit.

Ha! At least you're not too proud to show the world.... Looks like you were unlucky though, you don't seem to be going that fast.

Camera looks ace for £12

I was just gonna say that, brave of you to post it on YT!

Yeah it sounds absolutely lovely I hope the damage was minimal..... :)

Link to camera: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290413434971#ht_5737wt_1137 Need a decent SD card to put in it but I just nicked the one out of my old phone.

Have driven that road hundreds of times without even losing it slightly (used to be my daily drive to work in my old GT6). My excuses are that it was sunny at the bottom of the hill but cloudy and damp at the top, it was 6.30 in the morning, it had a new road surface.........yeah, fuck it no excuses, I just fucked it.

Taken me a couple of months though.

Its like going out and acting like a drunk idiot when you get a bit older. These days I wake up full of shame if my antics get a bit out of hand the night before. When I was younger the next morning we used laugh about all the shit we caused not giving a fuck what anyone thought. These days I cant leave the house for 3 days in case anyone sees me. However now, 2 weeks after the event they are as funny as they would have been the morning after 15 years ago. Takes longer to not care that you are a goon.

Downchange lock-up as it goes over the crest.....?

No wonder you crashed, you were driving on the wrong side of the road!

Bloody hell, as much as I want to smirk I can also imagine just what you've been through (apart from the fence) and I imagine you really love that car so no schadenfreude from me, I've done it plenty of times.

That Nurburgring BMW E30 clip is piss funny though

So how bad is the GT6 and which mk GT6 was/is it? did it have the shitty rear suspension set-up? any pics of the damage? I thought my days of twatty driving skillz were well over untill I drifted my M3 into a curb at 70mph last year  I've read that with TVRs you shouldn't engine brake as the combination of bloody torquey V8 and very light body can cause a spin but fuck loads of torque suddenly being delivered to the back wheels, its the number one reason for TVR accidents not involving other cars/objects/people/etc.

I agree that the camera results are pretty good especially for the money but how do you know if you've framed the shot ok?

Posted

It's not quite a TVR, but the engine braking thing applies to supercharged light cars, like the Polo G40 and Golf/Corrado G60.

My Polo did a beautiful spin on a wet roundabout just by lifting off slightly, you can feel that they engine brake much harder with the charger bolted to the engine and the Polo only weighs 860kg or something..... delicate handling!

Luckily, I wasn't filming so no evidence exists :)

I have just ordered one of the same cameras I think though, is it a little keyring jobbie?

Sierra 2.1????

Didnt know they did a 2.1........

Twas a Mk3 GT6 with a Rotoflex sus, just like my old one.

I think the reason it happened is that I had changed down a gear to accelerate once round the corner and let my foot off the clutch a bit early, the corner was on the crest of the hill, so once it was gone I was in the air and could not correct it and I just lost it.

Thankfully my mate was off work too that day so I drove round to his house and we went to the pub. :)

Car was not that badly knacked. Will take a pic of the bumper. Small whack on the rear by a bit of fence dent behind the bumper that I kicked out. Exhaust was ripped off as the brackets are rubber, but was easy to fix with some wire so I drove it home after getting dragged out of the field by a passing lorry.

Rear light was smashed too, but strangely the next day I was rooting around in my garage and found a spare one I did not even know I had. Result.

Classic lift off oversteer as you say - if you were dipping the clutch, you've come off the throttle, which makes the back end light just as it needs to grip. Did it myself in a Subaru Impreza Sport of all things about ten years ago! ABS doesn't work when you're going sidewards...

Posted

Bad luck matey....happens to the best of us. That 6 does sound stunning though.......

It's difficult to tell from the video cos it's sometimes difficult to judge distances and such like but I was wondering whether you needed to change down and get the gear and speed right earlier so you are back on the gas and pulling gently as you enter the hazard......

Modern cars are very forgiving and you can tend to be as hamfisted as you like and the designed in understeer and electronic aids will pull you through but that GT6 looks like it's ready to bite yer arse at the slightest indiscretion!

"They" didn't make a Sierra 2.1. I did. 1983 1.6L Estate, in the delightful Crystal Green (looked like dried bogies) Every time it needed a repair, it got upgraded. When the clutch went, in went a 5 speed box and clutch. When the pads and discs fooked up, in went a set of RS Turbo /XR4i Calipers and discs with Kevlar Greens. When the asthmatic 1.6 coughed it's last, in went the 2.1 that I had spent 6 months of evenings "fettling" in the front room and kitchen! ( I lived alone) and I fitted a lovely pair of twin 45s that I had erm..... in the filing cabinet next to the bath. A custom manifold was part of a deal from a mate so the carbs could clear the N/S strut top flitch. It fuckin' flew..... Mated to the XR4i 7" 3.6:1 diff and rear drums, it would tow the side off a house. It just didn't really grip the Lincolnshire roads too well...... 225/50/15 Hankooks on the late Cosworth option 7 spokers (in Gunmetal) Mmmm. Q cars rool. Except sideways on damp roads!!

I did something similar in a 205 GTi 1.9 the night I bought it. I was expecting it but it still 'just went'.

Wrote off an Integrale once on diesel. The plod car sent to investigate nearly followed me into the ditch, so his report went a long way toward getting the insurance sorted.

Wasn't filming either time. Kinda wish I had been now ;)

Aha! Gotcha! :D

Rear suspension unloading makes for sod-all grip, then it looks like the road surface did the rest.

Any accident you can walk away from is a good accident

See?

Buggers! Still, at least the £12 camera remained unscathed....
