How many different engine configurations have you owned?

I’ve had -

Transverse in-line 4 petrol

Longitudinal in-line 4 petrol & diesel

Transverse in-line 5 petrol

Longitudinal V6 petrol

Longitudinal V8 petrol

Capacity ranges from a 1300cc CVH engine up to a 7000cc big block V8.

Transmissions all either 4, 5 or 6 speed manual or good old fashioned automatic slush boxes.

Owned,

Single and twin cylinder two stokes (bikes).

Twin cylinder four stokes (bikes).

In line, traverse and horizontal four strokes.

In line and horizontal six cylinder four stokes.

Driven, Christ knows what over the last 50 odd years but certainly includes amongst other things eight cylinder diesels !

I think I can add to that:

Single air cooled

Vertical twin water cooled*

* could be cheating, as it's a locomotive...

I thought I’d only had inline fours and a flathead V8 for a moment, but actually I’ve had a few more. In approximate cylinder order:

50cc 2-stroke and 125cc 4-stroke singles in early 00s Vespa ET2 and ET4s. Good little things 👍

Flat twin air-cooled: ‘65 Citroen Ami. Hopeless lump. Citroen stopped it overheating by simply taking the cooling system off. And only half the engine must mean only half the problems, right?

Inline 3 pez hybrid: Mk1 Honda Insight. Lovely engine, did actually sound like half a V6.

Inline 3 pez turbo: VW Up GTI. A great engine.

Inline 4 petrol x various: Ford sidevalves, pre-crossflows and crossflows. Have broken all but one of them through lack of mechanical sympathy.

Inline 4 diesel turbot: 2013 Merc A Class. GR9 if you like clattery noises and vibrations.

Flathead V8: in a model T hotrod with a 5-speed box on the back. Mine was a German ex-military Cologne variant, so a bit like a French flatty but a bit bigger displacement and factory uprated. Another great engine. Only had about 120hp but stacks of torque and sounded fab.

Hmm, let’s see:

Single - mobylette thing

Flat 4, aircooled

Flat 4 water cooled

Inline 4

Inline 3

Inline 6 (VW LT)

V6 (omega)

Both the sixes were very short lived. Looking at the next car having another v6 and hoping it lasts longer.

Really want a V8 yank thing for the rumble, but suspect that might be a way off!

@Mrs6C thinks this should count, what do you say?

If Stollygate had ended differently I could have added inline eight to my list :( probably best that I can't though lol. Lots of interesting replies and I have also been reminded that I need to get a rotary at some point too.

If we are counting bikes and lawnmowers we might as well count anything with an engine :)

Just a flat twin, four cylinders, a straight six and a three cylinder. I seem to be missing a five!

My first was back in 2008 I think. A Peugeot hire car thing whilst the c5 disgraced itself in France. I think it was the shared Toyota engine?
presumably, missing a three, you would then skip to needing a v10, 12 and 16? Or is the Cadillac a six too rather than a v8?

Nothing exciting here I’m afraid.

Several inline fours and 3 V6.

Driven but not owned is much more extensive.

Single - bike

Parallel twin - bike

Inline 3 - 106

V4 - bike

Straight 4 - had loads but never owned a turbo petrol

Straight 6 - loads, mixture of petrol/diesel and N/A/turbo/supercharged

V6 - Disco 3

Flat 6 - Subaru

V8 - both variants of the Rover V8

As I was thinking the other day about how I must own a V12 at some point it got me also thinking about all the different configuration of engines I have had so far and how quite a few people on here will have had a lot more.

So to play along list all the different ones you have owned starting at the lowest cylinder count and going from there. I will go first

Inline four (obviously)

Flat four

Inline six

V6

VR6 (I think a VR counts as unique)

V8

That's a pretty short list 😔 must try harder.

Who can get closest to completing the set from single cylinder (Peel P50 springs to mind and Villiers engined Invalid carriages which if I don't mention @LightBulbFunwould) to sixteen cylinder (Any Veyron owners in the house) which is probably the highest possible answer.

Not sure if bikes should be allowed.... That would allow me an extra entry for single cylinder.

Inline Four

Inline Five

Inline Six

Flat twin

Flat four

V6

V8

Parallel Twin

Inline Triple

And thats just cars, as stated, if adding bikes, some more.
