Aye, there's a question. Does it have to be stuff that was out new in 1990? I always find it rather strange that lots of tellyprogs if they're set in a certain year, everyone on it seems to drive what would have been a brand new car.

1990 I was mainly driving the likes of Mk5 Cortinas and Mk2 Escorts. My mum had a 1980 VW Polo, brother had one of the first Mk3 Cavs, neighbour on one side had a Manta GTE, on the other side they had a Y reg Micra.

I'd love to see the Ncap safety rating for that

It's on their website.

fookin hell my LOLz hurt now. It even seems to have crashed into a snap-on tool cabinet, is that the standard by which cars are judged nowadays?

If a couple of workshops I've worked in are anything to go by, it's quite a good test!

I got told off for LOLling too hard during The Hills.

Seriously though, from what I remember there were loads of Fords, Fiesta, Sapphires, Escorts etc....

Seeing as this is for a film and how correct they are with cars, this is how it might look......

What you want vs What you get

Ford Sapphire GL ---- Ford Sierra Cosworth with later tinted lights

Ford Fiesta mk3 ---- Fiesta Mk4

Ford Escort mk2/3 ---- Escort mk4 (Que - Because its all they can get)

Volvo 340GL ---- Volvo 850

mk1 Rover 800 ---- Mk2 Rover 800 with later tinted lights

Vauxhall Nova ---- Saxo/bubble shape Micra

Basically you get the picture, people who head up this kind of stuff dont 'do' research, they just type into google - "car, 1990" and use whatever the closest car matched the search.

Its important to remember that many people were still using 70s tat such as Maxis, Allegros, Cortinas and so on. Unfortunately set designers dont accept this kind of thought. they will use whatever 'speaks' the 1990's, hence every character in show, rich or poor will have a 'new' 1990 model car, maybe 89' at a stretch.

Kid`s TV magic show "Tricky Business" was on the TV in 1990, and they had this big cardboard thing with at least one seat in it and some false lights on it, it also may have had loads of mad patterns all over it, and it might have been supposed to be some sort of pretend car, maybe you could give the studio a call and see if it`s still about? Maybe it wasn`t destroyed straight after the series was canned, eh?

You deffo need some 70s tat dotted around - in 1990 we had only just got rid of our Allegro and my grandad had a T reg Cavalier.

I've got two cars that would fit the bill though they're both for sale:

C-reg Nissan Sunny and B-reg Mazda 323 and both look about 5 or 6 years old easily.

Where are they needed?

In 1990 I had a 82 Talbot Samba, and 70's tat was much in evidence - MK1 and 2 Escorts aplenty, and were worthless. Me and a mate bought an Avenger 2 door for £30 with MOT. King of the boy racer cars at the time was the Nova SR. A famous local lad called Darren had a tricked-up, properly tuned Nova SR and we were all much in awe of it and him.

One Friday evening, he was at the traffic lights on the main Belfast Road, when what he thought was an old American car pulled up beside him. Young Darren duly takes off like the hammers on the amber, only to be almost inhaled by the other car. The "old American car" was a DB5 Aston in primer, which was on the way to be painted. 20 years on, Darren still gets stick!

My dad was rolling in a D reg Turqoise Vauxhall Belmont in 1990. 8)

Mine had a Subaru Leone 1.8 GL SuperStation and my granddad a Peugeot 309 GRD.

In 1990 around here I recall many mk2 Cavaliers (early and the later ones), mk1 Astra’s, ropey mk2 & 3 Escorts, the odd Morris Ital and even a couple of Renault Fuego's lived around the corner from me. There were various Austin Montego's in various stages of corrosion and tired looking Hillman Avengers.

The bloke opposite had just bought a brand new Nissan Bluebird but also had an 'A' reg Nissan Cherry Europe with a replacement, unpainted tailgate up the driveway. The bloke who lived next door to him had a red 'E' reg Nissan Sunny coupe. The local taxi rank ran a couple of 'Y' reg Talbot Solaras and shed loads of late 70's Austin FX4 black cabs. The mk1 Sierra was still a popular sighting and there were still plenty of early suffix-plated Austin Metro's kicking around, usually in cream, orange or dark blue from memory. Vauxhall Astramax vans were dotted around various industrial estates too. A teacher of mine had a very fetching metallic blue 'C' reg Vauxhall Carlton.

My dad had a company car, a silver 'E' reg Toyota Carina hatchback (that around this time he accidentally drove into the garage one evening with the nearside rear passenger door open...) with a very fetching blue velour interior. It wasn't the Carina 'E'. It was one of the last of the earlier model. At the time it was the only car in the household. My granddad had a 1972 K reg Vauxhall Firenza - a car he had from new and kept it until 1996.

How can I remember people's cars of twenty years ago so well, but not much else...?! Scary!

All seemed VERY normal at the time - now reads like a Autoshite wet dream.

Why not watch a film that was made at the time? Something like 'Nuns On The Run' or 'Bullseye'. Where they are set in this country and have a few street scenes, not only can you spot what cars are there, you can also see which cars are there in the greatest numbers. It could also prove to be mildly entertaining.

Early episodes of Keeping Up Appearances are actually great for shite spotting (not just Onslow's Cortina and Avenger - check the street scenes) - right era for Fred, too.

Tat in our driveway and in our village in 1990 (I was only small at the time so this is all I can remember....)

Dad was driving a Talbot Alpine LS 8) (KAK 513W)

Next door had a Mk2 Cavalier Diesel (A477 ERT) which was unloved and totally knackered by then!

The now retired mechanic over the road had a Pug 504 Diesel estate (DDX 157T) - also had a Volvo 245DL estate in Yellow which he has still got to this day! Landlord of the pub had a Jag XK 4.2 in Yellow and a dumped Triumph Harold in the car park.

Up the street there were Mk2/Mk3 Escorts, Fiat Strada, Mk2 Fiestas, Mk1/2 Cavaliers and a Datsun Cherry.

Dad's mates had a Talbot Solara 8)8) MGB, Sherpa van, Sierra and Mk2 Passat.

Police cars were Mk4 Escorts but were upgraded to the new Mk5's when they came out in September 1990. H*** TEX were some of the reg numbers of the cop cars AFAIK.

We had a Morris Ital Post Office van too!
