Selling crap to the VW crowd for more than it's worth

That's the thing about the internet though, I can only read the words on the screen, and RR Admin style DOES come across as arrogant.

It's very easy to relate it to something like going round to somebody's house, but personally I relate it more to a type of hospitality business (stay with me here).

OK if you go to a pub and you like it, you stay. If you become a regular all the better. BUT if you don't like it, and a lot of others don't, you end up with a cliquey little circle of regulars that likely won't welcome people they don't know, and the atmosphere gets stale.

Dunno about fred, but this to me is more like sadness than anger. There is a bit of a problem with RR, for sure, but what to do is unclear. Far as I can see though, the people who made it what it was are either gone or going quickly, and most of the remainder I can live without. No point continuing it here either, it isn't an autoshite problem now, is it?

read fred's reply now.. and yeah. It is a lot like that. It is like drinking in a pub where you know the landlord doesn't like you being there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It may come across as arrogant but they're all nice people just trying to keep their exceedingly busy forum focussed in the way they want it.

What amazes me is the enormous amount of traffic on that site, yet there's very, very little kicking off against the management. I don't buy the pub analogy, though I can see where you're coming from. Still think it's 'their forum, their rules' though.

Fred: I do (kinda) understand what you mean. A good friend of mine once co-owned a small club, the bouncers were all mates of his, and would actually turn people away simply because they didn't look like they'd fit in :D It wasn't a dress-code thing, he just didn't want townies or rich kids infesting his little haven.

I still maintain that if there was a way of filtering out all the alliterate/humourless/obnoxious/shit-thick members, there'd be no real problems at all. Perhaps if RR adopted a beige colour scheme and had an 'auto-post' program that filled the main board with Montegos and Solaras every couple of days?

True, it's not, but we couldn't have this conversation on RR, and yet it's a conversation that looks like it's an important one, and one that people want to have.

yeah, it isn't like we could discuss this on RR, is it? I just didn't want to be coming here dragging the place down whining about somewhere else, that isn't me all ;)

PS, I saw a really rat-look VW today. Early mk2 golf CL, roofrack, rust, stickers, covered in grime, LHD, lithiuanian plates... peered in the window, its showing 467,000km on the clock!

RR is very good but at times it can sometimes appear a tiny minority only post so they can lick the moderator's collective arses and I find that incredibly annoying.

Going back to creating 'different' cars there is a limited market. I got a Merc seven seater estate from RR that had been lowered/flamed. I loved it but barely anyone else did and it was a right bargain. It was also a fugging nightmare to sell on again and it's been through bloody loads of owners.

my experience of RR over the last 4 years is overall a positive one.

but......

whilst i dont mind being told by admin not to post certain topics, or picture links, or start arguments (their forum, their rules etc etc)

i do object to non-admin telling me my opinion is invalid and basically shut up your not our target memebrship.

I have being asked to leave the forum (3 times so far, last time quoted by scary in the TG thread) although iam thickskinned person who doesnt give a fuck what HW thinks, so i continue to read and post

I also object to reading threads that turn into arguments because someone elses opinion is different from 'the modus operandi' and a non-admin member (always the same one) takes it upon themselves to ruin a discussion by quoting the forum rules. very childish 'negitive' arselicking behaviour

as i said on the locked topgear thread

whats happened to the HW mantra of 'cool modified cars'?

for me RR so far this year has been:

75% future magazine content - iam sure some admin use the thread count to pitch ideas to mags.

15% useful, technical advice & help from a small number of genuine car nuts

10% thoughtpolice related bullshit by people who have one car that they have owned for years, dont work on or use, and are not interested in any members cars unless its finished, very shiny and has silly stance, wheels and tyres

Fair point, that does annoy me immensely as well (and I've not even been the target of it) - it's so pointless, the more self-righteous posts they make, the more negativity they're going to generate. Any fule kno dat. Although one particular 'wannabe' has changed their tune somewhat since Cavette showed them the error of their ways :lol:

I'd just like to say this wasn't meant to be an RR discussion thread, but while we're on the subject ( :D ) I have had one problem with it, I had a signature image that said 'Arsehole Of The Year 2010' and it was removed in case it offended someone.

ahhh - so it was you - admin really spit their collective dummies out over that

i seem to remember being informed that the 'member of the month' banner was only for builders of cool modified cars and yet the month after one of arselickers got the title

Posted

Hey, I won forum person of the year, thread of the year AND car of the year and never even got as much as a PM saying "well done" so meh... the whole "member of the month" bollocks kinda stuck in my throat a bit.

nar, I'm not bitter... mine's a pint of Bass.. what? you kidding? eh, when? Oh. Now I'm pissed.....

I thought the 'arsehole' banner deletion was just sour grapes, cos the management had no sense of humour.....

 Holy crap , i went away to do some work on the Rebel and this turns into RR thread .

Now let me remind you all of the rules of autoshite

Only kidding !!

As of yet i have not been told to feck off from retro rides.

But i may make a thread about my rebel and Fiesta over there and see what reaction i get - Good or bad idea ?

p.s

Sorry station about the thread

I've been a member of RR since 2004, I still like the place but, I have no interest in the rants/arguements/etc zzzz, I just use it for what I always have done: looking a pics of cool cars, sadly these days these can be harder to find through the bickering.

edit and selling to the VW lot. I sold a set of nice period 70's alloys on RR to a vw'er for 150. a month later they were up for sale for 260!

Put 'em on! I can see them loving the Rebel especially!

Since you said ... i'm gonna do it

Cue Mark being banned from a Forum LOL

I don´t care about the arguing, I only want to tell you all that if you want to be cool and write something german on your german car, please ask someone who speaks german if your words are meaning anything! If he´d asked a german speaking bloke about the word "Verfolgungsträger" he would have heard that it doesn´t mean anything. "Feldjäger" would make a lot more sence for example!

I used to love RR, infact I still do although I dont post very often at all now. Its grown into a huge forum and is far less "personal" than it used to be with much inane waffle. It must be a right nightmare to moderate properly, Im not sure Id know where to start. Wannabee mods really get on my tits too, one or two are self-appointed internet police who are constantly making snide comments or quoting the rule book. Annoying.

Theres still stacks of talent on there, you just need to search harder.

That's the whole point, I have lost the interest in searching harder..... Wading through post after post of pictures and threads about how to lower something doesn't do it for me.

When I had a matt black Mini with a Russian flag painted on the door,I used my Brother's book on model tanks to find something to write underneath.I think it translated as "Death to the Nazi invaders"

Very well put. I like RR, don't tend to post much though. There are some very talented people and some really good threads in amongst the dross, sadly there is a bit of crap as well but I guess thats what happens as forums get bigger. I can understand why they moderate it how they do - its their forum and they don't want it full of arguments and off topic stuff which is fair enough although it does come across as a bit 'off' at times. They seem be trying to build the RR brand if you will with events like The Gathering and expand away from being purely a forum which is probably a good move. It really can't be easy for HW etc and I really don't envy them one bit.

ISTR that my Rebel went down well at RR back in 2008, before the little orange sod embarrassed me, but then it was de-bumpered and had a K&N sticker on the back door. Oh yes, and the modified engine (Weber, K&N, camshaft mod, balance job, oi! wake up...) helped.

Anyway, imagine my surprise when I read through this thread entitled "Selling crap to the VW crowd for more than it's worth", assuming that instructions for doing just that would be included........ :x:oops:

what the fuck?

actually it just got beyond wierd. I think RR has been invaded by the bodysnatchers or something. I'm off to change my avatar to this

me too. what's worse is that there are people arguing with each other about how to deal with it! It's NSRA all over again!

TwincamGti came to Cholmondeley last year or the year before I'm sure, think he's Cheshire based and drives a Metro GTi? Seemed like a decent bloke but if that's his train of thought he can fuck right off.
