Influx of LHD shite in UK?

With the problems caused by the Icelandic volcano erupting causing OMG ARMAGEDDON CHAOS across Europe I'm starting to hear more and more stories about people buying old bangers for a few hundred Euros and driving back to Britain so that they can get homeThis had me thinking, do you think that we will see influx of old shite ending up at scrapyards and on ebay which would be helpful for parts for us?, Or do you just think it's be mainly crap like Vectras and Mondeos which will be of no real use?.I read in the Sun yesterday how a couple bought a Seat Ibiza for 700 euros and OMG 120000 milesm and drove it back from Spain, Another couple i saw on the news were even talking about buying a car in Bangkok and driving it back! I wonder if anyone is man enough to buy a Tagora and drive that back though?! 8)

Yep, go on the web, buy some RAC euro cover. Go hunting for some tat. Set off. If it breaks, call the numbers given and get a lift!

Mrs_Seth's uncle will be stuck in India if his flight on Thursday doesn't happen. I should tell him to bring a Hindustan or a Standard Gazel back :D

seem like an idea to get on a ferry form the UK to Spain, go buy a Tagora.Drive it back and rent out the spare seats to some holiday folk in need, charge them the cost of the car and ferry  One Free Tagora!!!!

Four door made of Herald parts mostly. Bill from Rarebits (Triumph specialist) imported a four door estate version a few years ago but I don't think its hit the road yet here.

I think I'd actually RATHER drive home than catch a plane (or even worse, delayed for four days), but that's how I am.

OMG VOLCANO CHAOS has not affected me one iota. Were I stranded like the milions reported on the truth box, I would, however, buy a real cheap shitter and drive it home. Something like a Volga from the Ukraine would do.

I get the impression most civilians would think anything over 5 years old won't get across town, let alone across a continent.....

I've been doing a tour of all the London Airports this week, doing risk assessments for the summer. It's very bizzare, It's almost like being in a Zombie movie as they are all deserted.

Mrs Parky may be home next week and already knows if her flight ends up diverted to Spain, she will have a couple of hundred euros worth of OMG 70's FRENCH TAT waiting for her when she gets there. Might be able to find a cheap R14!Now for ebay.es. Whats Spanish for ALRT M8 WIL U TAK £50 CASH COLLECT TONITE?

I was seriously looking into importing a car (Renault 14 in particular) from France but was told that once I got through customs I would have to trailer it home as I would not be allowed to drive a French registered car on British soil!If I could drive it home, it may be something I would consider doing this summer. Getting a car trailered from Dover to the Midlands would probably as much as I would be spending on the car.Does anyone know where the law stands on this?Pete.

Im sure you have a period of time (6 months?) in which you can drive round in a foreign registered car before you have to re-register it here. I love the idea of bringing over some LHD obscure chod from France or Spain. I agree that a Tagora would be a superb choice!

That's horseshit. It's as simple as buying it, make sure you've got insurance (and AA cover if you're a scaredy cat) then drive / sail / fly it back to UK.Once you land, you can either just drive on through and head home like I did, or stop at customs and declare 200 fags and a Renault 14.You've got a month to drive around on foreign plates while you book it in for an MoT, which they'll do on the chassis number or French registration. Once that's passed you can apply for UK registration and have the joy of paying your first road tax.Once it's registered, get some plates and then take it back to the MoT garage to update your document with the new British registration.Buy some yellow headlights for it. :D

Excellent :D Thanks for the info. I think a trip to France might be on the cards for the summer then.Pete.

^whsIt is so much better/cheaper/fun to drive all the way back- you can even get temp european insurance to drive some chod back from Yerp- worked for me with both the Panda and LNA.It's best to try and pre-book the ferry as the turn up and go prices are quite dear- I think Eurotunnel was hideously expensive.Preston doovla office reprinted my Panda's mot cert with the new reg number on it too.

yep, think about it, if it was illegal to drive on French plates here, it would be illegal to drive on UK ones over there.

Talking of eBay Spain...look at this little gem that's begging for a new life in the UK...

I was told by DVLA when I asked last September that if I was the registered keeper of the Escort when it came into the country, that I wouldn't be able to drive it here.. sounded very dodgy to me as well.Way I see it, when the Escort comes here, if I drive it it'll be on either Czech or German 'export' reg plates. Czech ones would be a pain as I'd either have to pay import tax to Czech and then buy export tags - which are little paper bits with the reg printed on which you stick to the inside of your windows, a bit like those bloody annoying auction number tags or I could register it as a Veteran which would issue the plates to me instead of the car.. I don't fully understand how this works yet.Alternatively, I could trailer it up to Germany (20 miles or so), and register it on export plates there. This gets me proper metal plates and German rather than Czech id - makes life a lot easier across Europe, that does. When I said to Doovlaman that was an option he started quoting weird rules at me...

Hey Pete, plenty of Czech reg'd cars driving round the Bournemouth & Poole area, spoken to various drivers (in Czech, dobry den etc.) they do not get any hassle from the filth, same as all the thousands of Dutch and German registered vehicles I see down in Cornwall every summer......Know of a Brit who regularly drives round in a French reg'd Celica (06, Nice reg) all the time, never gets pulled, parks on double yellows to use an ATM, unbelievable, but seen it happen, warden just walks past !!
