Yes, rev counter moves as it cranks.

Fuel filter should have a hand primer on these, so you could rule out fuel running back by pumping it until it goes hard (oo er etc)

Otherwise it's looking like a code scan may be in order.

Odd!

Is there a green light on the dash as you crank?

If so, bet your bottom dollar the fuesbox has unsynced from the ecu.

No green lights as it cranks. I'm bemused. Car started and ran instantly from cold when we picked it up despite having stood for a while. Have disconnected battery to see if anything resets. We had a Micra that needed the battery terminals connecting together for a while if you changed the battery otherwise that would crank but not fire. It must have fuel at the injectors because it was running when we parked it up and switched it off.

Diag will tell you if there's issues around the fuel pressure and you can troubleshoot from there.  Otherwise you're just randomly wiggling stuff about until you find the fault.

Would it not be a fuse or relay popped after the spanner /  sparks incident?

Have checked fuses 8 & 9. Wondering if one of the Foxwell type diagnostic things might help me. Was thinking of buying one anyway. Trouble is, the fecking thing is stuck now, blocking MrsDs Ssangyong space on the front. I've basically turned a short range electric car that needed a drop of diesel, into a garden ornament!

Thankfully I never leave a Facebook group after selling a car as it comes in handy to possibly help others:

You didnt disconnect or connect the battery with the key in by any chance?

Definitely not. All good advice though, thanks.

Just wondering if the accidental bridging incident caused the key to somehow be wiped.

Both keys would have been in my trouser pocket, so not sure.

If they were in your pocket you shouldn't have a problem. For some reason Honda's like to forget/wipe keys that are left in the ignition barrel whilst the electrics are interfered with - usually when being jump started etc.

Sorry, how would you jump start it without the key being in the barrel?

Sorry, I should've been clearer (it made sense in my head) by 'electrics are interfered with - usually when being jump started' I meant when you put a jump pack or jump leads on to the car to jump start it you shouldn't have the key in the barrel. Obviously you can put the key in to crank it 😁

My money is still on an immobiliser issue as it sounds like the fuel supply is being denied. Either on the key or in the car itself. Im sure half decent code reader would comfirm. Having said that Im fairly sure these flag up a message on the dash 🤷‍♂️

Assume you don't have at home breakdown cover, my motor just died this afternoon, no I haven't touched anything

In my spaceship experience, it's not the keys it wipes, it's the fusebox module that loses the code and stops communicating with the ECU.

You can go into diag software and the keys will still be registered in the memory and you can't re-register them, it's always the fusebox needing re-paired up with the ECU.

Thanks, I thought I'd been doing it wrong all these years!

dunno if it's applicable to 8gen spaceship but 10 gen says turn on key an hold brake pedal for about 30 sec before cranking after battery change

I’m also from leicester and spotted this for sale too late.

I’ve got a 2006 Civic, and a 07 Accord. A couple of weeks back the civic lost its key code at random (had sat with flat battery a few days) whilst trying to start it immobilised a flashing green key was present on the clocks, in the 10 o clock position. Long story short I had to reprogramme it with diagnostics, but I used top of the range Autel, so you’ll maybe need something similar (not a £50 Amazon special)

Mines fine now, starts first time. No sign of green key light since.

Great cars, rear axles can rot so worth a poke about, otherwise little to go wrong pat stuff wearing out.

On mine, the green light goes out straight away.Runs on Easy Start ok. Checked for code with a Aldi fifteen quid thing. P1236, turbo overboost and P0339, intermittent crank sensor. Cleared them and they've not come back. Planning to buy a diagnostic thingy anyway, but not sure what to go for. Current favourite is Foxwell Nt809BT, around £350,but suggestions welcome, because I don't really know what I'm doing. Consoled myself with polishing the perspex nosecone, doing the wheels with Cilit Bang, hoovering it out and sticking a loose door handle cover. Was going to wash it but rain stopped play. Plan was to sort alternator, then clean it up, but hey ho..

You’ll need at least 5v in the battery for sensors to work properly so the crank sensor could be explained by that.

If you can get live data on your diag thingy you should be able to see the crank speed reading, if it’s intermittent, or plain wrong  probably the sensor is dead.

My civic showed no code for immobiliser in the ECU when it wouldn’t start, just flashed the green key light. My Civics petrol though so could be different.

I mostly drive the accord (which is a 2.2 dizzler) that has the key light come on and quickly go out every time you start it.

You have checked the fuel pump fuse and relay?? Still say your easiest is to get breakdown cover with home assist, give it 24 hours and tell a few porkies to the bert, he will have the diagnostic gear and know it

Shorting out the big B+ lead against the body shouldn't do anything. At worst it will blow one of the massive fuses but it's literally just a wire that goes from the battery to the alternator and starter with a big fuse in between so there's no electronics that will inhibit starting.

Crank sensor code sounds suspicious. But if the rev counter is moving it should be ok as they tend to play up when hot more than anything.

I'd check the plug incase it's been knocked though

Aldi code readers aren't the best for this sort of thing, you'll easily want one of the tablet style ones even if it's just a sub £100 entry level model

All(tyre) dressed up and nowhere to go. Really is a tidy little thing. Has cleaned up very well. Just wish it'd start! If I get a diagnostic thing, which I was planning to do pre Civic, anyway, would it tell me what was happening, or not happening when it cranks over without firing? Any recommendations? Is something around 300 quid likely to do the business? IMG_20230506_184152.thumb.jpg.717fe5efbbc69859899bb535f3fc0a40.jpg

It hugely depends on what you buy, but even the most entry level tablet style scanner should be giving you fault codes and basic live data

You could even get an ELM327 for £5 and connect it to your phone, that'll give you fault codes and live data but it's not perfect

This isn't a specific recommendation because I've never used one but this looks like a pretty capable bit of kit for just over £200

£240 with a ~£36 discount code

One I've been contemplating is an Autel MX808S. Works out at 320 with an inspection camera and a 20quid discount.

I would have to check but I have an Autel as a second scanner and I think it might be that exact model or at least a very close one. If so well worth that sort of money

Well, got it started.Had phoned RAC, we haven't got home start.Woman said we could  add it there and then, but Mrs D would have to do it as it's in her name. She was too busy to ring up, so carried on playing with it. It would srart randomly and run for a few seconds. Embarrassing really, eventually found there wasn't enough fuel or it had IMG_20230507_205743.thumb.jpg.83271a861804de5cfd05e2447c1e004d.jpgair in the system. Fuel gauge was reading and light not on after I had put a canful in. But priming bulb kept going soft.Apparently there isn't a separate fuel pump, but lift pump is built into high pressure pump which seems a bit odd, but sort of makes sense with it sucking rather than pushing the juice. Put another canful in, bit more priming, jump leads off a slave battery, lots of easy start and eventually coughed into life. Seems fine now. Lad stuck it on his insurance and used it to drive us into town to play pool. Well impressed with it. Quite lively, but with 2.2 litres in a small car, suppose it should be. It's funny little thing, sort of a vision of a future that never happened.

Glad you have it sorted.

Diagnostic wise, my mate has an Autel 808 thing and my much cheaper iCarSoft Max does the same as his with a similar interface.

£300-325 seems to be the going rate for them, he gets updates for 2 years and I seem to get them for life with mine, however Autel are established and won't be going anywhere, my iCarSoft had lifetime updates but if they go out of business on 2 years then I won't get anything.
