Woke at 5 WTF, thanks brain! Went back to sleep, arose just after 6, munched some toast. Now being used as a cushion by the boss...

One cup of black coffee slurped and guzzled and some hob knobs eaten... Now trying to get the oaty bits out of my teeth.

In other new Mrs Marina Door Handles has now arisen and is busy drinking tea and Crocheting. Hope she is up for a drive out!

Phone issues have scuppered my thread but fortunately not the car collection! Anyway, the car was successfully purchased and brought home. Many thanks too Sutty for pointing me in the direction of said car and Mrs MDH for being a chauffeur and emergency cash fund  because my bank branch had closed at midday on Saturday (just after agreeing the purchase) with both of us on a £500 a day with drawl limit this meant multiple trips to the whole in the wall and yes I have  paid her back!

Anyway what is said car? Well, I can confirm it isn't a ........

Mapped? Its got a built in sat nav map?! Not a clue, it wasn't mentioned and I shall cheerfully remain ignorant of such things.

Don’t think it is, nothing mentioned about maps unless there’s an OS map in the glovebox still?

Brief update time now I have done about 70 whole English miles in the thing. Its very comfortable,  I am particularly enjoying the heated leather seats  and dual climate HVAC thingy. It feels pretty tight to drive which is pretty good considering it has over 122 thousand miles on the clock and I am actually remembering to use 6th gear (this is a bit of  a novelty for me). The Honda Diesel lump seems pretty willing, has decently torque and doesn't sound too awful.

Slight down sides are its headlights, fine on main but really quite shit on dip beam (and that is compared to my 23 year Subarus Halogens!). Then there are the tyres, Sailwins on the front and Churchills on the back (probably named after the dog rather than the man), mind you considering the crappy road conditions they have been fine.

All in all it not to bad for £1750, oddly if I hadn't been in such a muck sweat to get a car in time for this week  I probably would have ended up in something more predictable (for me) and probably worse!

So 3ish months in time for an update, Its a Honda, its running fine right............

Not quite, about 2000 miles in I started getting a rumbling, tube trainy noise coming from the rear end. After a while I pinned it down to the rear wheel bearings, oh god not again! Turns out as this is a front drive car, Honda have gone with bolt in all in one hub/bearing units on the rear, which are dead easy to change but also a lot more expensive than trad press in types. Whilst I was in there I also changed the discs and pads.

So this should have been straight forward right? Well test drive went fine The following day I took the car to work, about ten miles in I start to hear a rumbling??? When I got to work (another 7 miles later) I checked the temps of all the wheels (highly sophisticated back of the hand method) fronts are stone cold, rear right quite warm, rear left Scorchio! WTF? 

First thoughts are, have I got seizing calipers? Were the calipers responsible for killing the old bearings?

I have done some more road testing got the wheels hot again and then checked the brakes, the wheels are free once you are off the brakes, checking both the pedal and the handbrake, the amount of heat suggests that it should be binding but it wasn't so that leaves one conclusion...... Dodgy new bearings, great, back to the factors then..... 

So at the moment I am back to using the Subaru, good job I finished the repairs on that then!

Thats is bad, what brand were the bearings? Good to know so it can be avoided.

They were FAG who are a good solid German brand.... Bit odd really.

It won’t be a bag FAG bearing . 
Slow to release caliper or a sticky hand brake cable far more likely on a Honda

Hmmm I have to admit, the more I have thought about this the less it makes sense, I didn't mention this but on the second test run the other rear wheel got hot, which was rather confusing! I am picking up new new FAG bearings today (hopefully). Will fit and test carefully, possibly avoid using the handbrake to start with etc.

Sorry if I’m teaching granny how to suck eggs but I assume you have some slack in the handbrake cables when you wound the calipers back ? 
Also did you take the car for a road test to bed in the brakes and let the adjusters work before you used the hand brake .

Final check - have you got the notch in the piston set to front / back orientation so they align with the tit on the back of the pad ?

Not at all, its been a while since I had a car with rear calipers which also do handbrake duty.

First question, errr no!

Second question yes I did.

I will be collecting the parts in the next hour or so, will report back at some point.....

I must have fitted hundreds of FAG bearings and not had a bad one yet so I’m a bit suspicious

Had this last year on the Bini - one side got very hot, stripped everything out, refitted - still the same. No palpable dragging at any point, no rumblings, just heat.
After chasing my arse for  week pulling bits off, on, in and out,  I put in another pair of new pads (different brand) and that fixed it - totally pissed me off at the time.

Pads seized in the carriers or partially seized slider pins a fave on Hondas as well .

Muppets that use copper grease on the sliders need fucking with a rough end of a pineapple too 😂

I now have one new bearing...   The factors had been sent two but when the parts man checked them and noticed the boxes were different, he found one was sealed properly in its bag and the other had obviously been fitted previously, it actually had some corrosion and dirt on it, so that went well! 

So  I have now fitted the new-new one on the drivers side, re fitted the remaining new one (if you see what I mean) to the other side. I have checked everything over, lined up the caliper pistons with the  pads. The handbrake is staying off, so next is a road test....
