To flesh out the details a bit, it’s a 1987 Polo 1.3 Coupe which makes it an early Mk2. 5 speed, steel sunroof, all the usual refinements  Below average mileage for year at 136,000 but I’m told the head gasket was done a couple of years ago. It runs fine, everything works, starts first time and costs peanuts to run. 6 months MoT, tax runs out at the end of MarchA few rust bubbles around the side windows but the usual spot of the petrol filler pipe is sound. Paint is mostly alright after a polish, driver’s front wing is not shiny at all. Would make great Euro-look for anyone without imagination, or a sensible runabout for anyone else. It’s never let me down in the 6 months I’ve owned it, bounding through the snow like an energetic husky.£250, photos to follow, car is in Luton.Ta

I drove it tonight for the first time and it feels nice and solid, temp warning light started flashing so I'll check that out later but generally a really nice car!

Temp warning light flashing? Check the wiring hasn't been confused, those long dangly cables often get put back wrong if people have been messing.... Much easier with modern stuff... (Pfft!) I bought a Jetta Diesel with the same issue, it had been swapped, a quick check with a wiring diagram brought it back to health. The only other possibilities are a cooling fault (well duh!) or the PCB on the back of the dash is cracked.

It does that now and again, I'd agree with Albert's diagnosis of something at the back of the dash because it sometimes flashes when you hit a bump. The temperature gauge is steady and it never overheats nor uses any coolant. I occasionally bled the system (white plastic bleed valve by the heater box) and convinced myself it had helped but it never did. It'll go for days and days without flashing, then flash a few times on the same trip. It's a good old thing to own, it cost less to buy than a month's repayment on most cars and less than the annual service on our Volvo. And it never let me down.Enjoy!

To be honest the temperature guage was nice and low so I'm not fretting, it's a gorgeous little thing, I'm looking forward to going through it at the weekend.

It seems to run a bit cool on the whole, but in traffic the gauge goes up a bit then the fan cuts in and it cools again - just as it should. The night before it was collected I got it upto 100 on a slight downhill, the speedo reads a bit fast but even so, the car was singing its little heart out :D
