Just been musing to myself on some of the more dramatic model changes that we've seen over the years, for instanceEscort to FocusRover P6 to SD1Mini to MetroCortina to SierraLight 15 to DSBeetle to GolfCompare say Mercedes, Porsche and BMW, where there seems to have been more of an evolution, at least in styling terms.Any more?

I don't see Mk2 to Mk3 Transit as being very radical either, they are basically the same concept except the newer one has independent front suspension.How about VW Transporter T25/3>T4.

What about Vauxhall replacing the Midi with an equally old re-hash of a Trafic? Bizarre! The Trafic was even lauched a couple of years before the Bedford Midi in hte UK. GR8 4 admitting selling a sub-standard design all along?

The Granada to the frog-faced Scorpio was the best one I can think of, I know they're pretty identical under the skin but wow, it took guts to put that body on.Cortina to Sierra and Escort to Focus.... surprising really that Ford - a mainstay traditional carmaker - does these whacky things from time to time. Even the Mk2 to Mk3 Escort was pretty out of the box, when compared to Mk1->Mk2 and Mk3->Mk4.

Jaguar S Type > Jaguar XFI guess the Audi 100 that came out in the mid 1980s (you know the one, 'The Most Aerodynamic Production Car in The World' one) was quite a radical replacement.

Not quite a replacement, but its amazing what a talented designer can do with an old turd and a budget that frowns apon panel changes

Daihatsu Charmant to Applause.Straight from a pair of ancient Toyota engines (one being a pushrod from the mid-60s) to a modern 16V fuel-injected one, RWD to FWD (or even 4WD in Japan), 4-door saloon to 5-door hatch (with 4-door saloon looks!), it's even a Daihatsu design from the ground-up instead of a tinkered-with Corolla.

I'd question that one mechanically as both the Volvo 66 and 340 were Daf designs and the earliest 340s were Variomatic....obviously massive leap forard in styling thoughDaf 44 - Daf 55 would be a mechanical example

I would agree with that. My kind of idea was that the 66 was rather cute and cuddly and the 340 a piggy, stonking munter.

Quite agree. The interior is just terrible as well. How they managed to take the utilitarian interior of the Panda and the quite stylish IMHO interior of the 500.http://members.iinet.net.au/~fenix1983/ ... The Beetle to Mk1 Golf was a pretty radical transformation.Alfasud to 33.Fiat 127 to Uno.Peugeot 104 to 205.
