No mention of the DS in the background!

Over a hundred cars entered with a really varied field as there were no real regulations. Lots of independents but the three biggest works teams were Ford, Leyland and Citroen although Citroen upset a lot of people by technically selling their cars to their drivers making them private entries. This upset a lot of the actual privateers because they were fully factory prepared with a full works back up en route.

Of the hundredish cars only twenty three finished. The top five were all mk1 Escorts or Triumph 2.5 PIs. Leyland entered quite a mixed bag. Their main attack were the Triumphs but there were also several Landcrabs, a couple of Maxis and a single  Mini.

The Mini was never intended to finish but was designed as bait for the Escorts. The plan being to go flat out on the European stages to try and tempt the Fords to keep up and possibly break something. It was never intended to get past Europe.

Leyland Australia entered one of the Landcrabs that finished the London to Sydney Marathon two years earlier and had been left there. So it was prepped by Leyland Australia with an Australian crew and shipped back to London to set off for Mexico. That's one well travelled car.

A fascinating event. As this is supposed to be a picture thread have some pictures.

My dad took us to the start of the World Cup Rally at Wembley Stadium. I remember the Rolls with the roof top exhausts because when I got home I immediately modified my Matchbox Silver Shadow with the aid of Plasticene.

The Marshalls of Cambridge Maxi of Tish Ozanne, Bronwyn Burrell and Tina Kerridge...

has been restored and is being used in some historic events with Bronwyn Burrell at the wheel.

I saw it on the Harewood Special Test during the 2018 Rally of the Tests.

Sadly the wacky columns and shizz succumbed to the wreckers ball along with the knackered looking tenements as they were demolished after fire damage in 1977, although the theatre is still going.

Hey Scott, Virgil here, I'm having trouble getting all the luggage in, it looks like I'm gonna have to leave the spare.
