N Dentressangle Posted June 2 Posted June 2 I'd say a 15 year old derv auto BMW has liability written all over it. Every bill will be £500-£1000. If you're lucky. A cheap Berlingo would be a better choice if you're trying to save money. MrGTI6, JJ0063 and SmokinWaffle 1 2

S2000 Posted June 2 Posted June 2 Should ride well being an SE and not rattle your fillings out. It's a nice spec with the Sport goodies on an SE. I would check if it has had 1 if not 2 gearbox services otherwise you may want to factor that in.

I’ve asked for some info as I also want to know who it was did the chain, he wasn’t at home but said he thinks it was Reading BMW and they did a box service at the same time - reckons everything is BMW main dealer bar the last year when he had it done privately. If that’s the case, it’s clearly been well looked after. Proper old man spec so would make sense! S2000 1

I quite fancy one myself. Nice to mod if you wanted. Nice diesel engines. Sub £2000 would get you an ok one.

JJ0063 Posted June 3 Author Posted June 3 Well, BMW did do the chain it seems! Gonna have a think as the seller is now away until the weekend but looking like an unmarked copper would be fun.

I’ve just enquired about viewing a Caddy on Saturday. It’s a high miler but looks very original and genuine so I’ll be interested to see if it comes good.
loserone Posted June 3 Posted June 3 I love my express to bits but it doesn't seem like JJs cup of tea. And that one is a petrol.
JJ0063 Posted June 4 Author Posted June 4 So I’ve got the two options in my head but am quite literally 50/50 on which way to go. We’ve got the BMW 530D, 2010, 182k, full main dealer history until the most recent one. Has had the chain done by BMW in 2019. 3.0 diesel, 240bhp, 8 speed auto. Not overly keen on the white/cream interior but we all know I love a BM and the F11 is a lovely barge. £4000 The other option is a complete contrast and is a 2014 Caddy 1.6 TDI Highline. Top spec with cruise, heated seats, nav etc. 199k on the clock but again full history, belt has been done, clutch been done, injectors etc all done. I like the practical side of a van for the dogs but we do already have the Berlingo and I can’t decide if having 2 vans but no car is a problem (we’ve got no kids and I can’t remember the last time we took a back seat passenger tbh). £3000. The BMW is 20 mins from me whereas the Caddy is 1.5hrs. I would however have to drive past the village the BMW is in to get to the caddy. Tempted to arrange to view the BMW Saturday lunchtime and if I don’t like it, carry on to the Caddy. Other factors are tax/insurance. BMW is £265 vs Caddy at £345 for tax. Insurance on the Caddy is £178 as opposed to £375 for the BMW. Caddy would be better on fuel. Help.
Matty Posted June 4 Posted June 4 I could be talking out of my arse here but isn't the 1600 vw diesel a little problematic compared to the 2 litre? robt100 1

I think I’d probably just get used to it in all honesty, I’m really trying to get my mind into just spending money on a vehicle and just leaving it alone. I managed to pull myself out of actual modifications, now need to get past changing things for the sake of it 😂 BM does have an electric flip out tow bar which is another plus come to think of it… Dick Cheeseburger 1
S2000 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 A 300K caddy or a 190K BMW which changes gear for you, will be more relaxing to drive, air suspension on the back and full dealer history. Unless you have an urgent need for a second van I’d take the BMW, the dogs will be more comfy in it and I suspect in the summer it will be cooler for them being white and dual zone aircon. When I sold my L200 I thought it miss the practicality of it compared to the X5, however the ride is better, it changes gear for me and is a nicer place to be for me and the dogs. JJ0063 1
Bren Posted June 4 Posted June 4 I like my F11. It's not as quick as my 545 - more brisk - but it is much better on fuel. I have had to buy a new battery, s/h rear light cluster and some bits of trim as some was damaged. JJ0063 1
EspenO Posted June 4 Posted June 4 The bimmer. No brainer. Of course then the timing chain will set itself on fire, the rear suspension arms will get tangled into the front hubs, the injectors will start squirting windscreen wash. And whatever else people who have never owned one, say they do. dome, AnnoyingPentium, RoverFolkUs and 2 others 5
JJ0063 Posted June 5 Author Posted June 5 Well that’s the Caddy off the list anyway I think. What a load of bollocks. VAG are very sensitive to throwing the EML but that’s clearly an intermittent fault that hasn’t been fixed! Matty, RoverFolkUs, Dick Cheeseburger and 1 other 4

In other words the DPF is knackered. As you say, I’m glad she’s told me so I don’t waste my time or money! The BMW is now the main contender but mrs JJ really doesn’t like the colour or interior so that may be off too for an easy life. The hunt continues for now! comfortablynumb 1

A nice four figure repair job. So go with the BMW, which will no doubt at some point also need a four figure repair job🤣 JJ0063 1
JJ0063 Posted June 5 Author Posted June 5 Mrs JJ likes this and the fact it’s tatty doesn’t bother me. My bodywork guy owes me a favour so the bumper could be sorted cheap and a bolt on wing is easily sorted. It’s also 10 mins from my house. If I could get it for say £2750, it looks like an alright option as a cheap dog carrier/comfy enough cruiser? https://ebay.us/m/mdGo0E Westbay 1
