With this selection you are really spoiling us!Any chance of liberating the rimz of that 323i? I've owned a couple of sets of those, machine up some caps & do some detailing an they look orsumz. Would be nice to apply them to the scratty ex-"hoover service" Astravan. OOF. Are these all from your new 'hood?

Starcraft! Fantastic. I didn't know what the hell it was. I thought the cortina mash up was something else, but a Solara? That has to be the ultimate shite.Mr Weasel, roughly the top half were taken in and around the North East, the rest was down in Southampton. Those Bluebirds as far as I know are FWD. I rather liked that Manta too, always wanted one since I was wee.

I was just thinking about your excitement level over the Manta A. Actually, reading that back, it sounds a bit wrong.:lol: Are those bluebirds as per the last pic RWD or FWD?

Err, thanks...Those Bluebirds are not RWD RETRO DRIFT etc etc, they are FWD. Both the green B-plater and the red one are U11 series, they did a facelift on it so it kind of resembled the UK-built T72 series ones that it was sold alongside. In America I think you can get them with a V6, still FWD.

Always get a bit confused with those Bluebirds, your U11 seemed to be here and gone in a flash.... 910's ran through to "B" reg or thereabouts, and T72(? Sunderland jobbies) were in full swing by "D"....

Ah, Bluebirds of that era are confusing. ‘Proper’ U11 Bluebirds did carry on after introduction of the T12/T72 here, but apart from the estate we didn’t get them. So it seemed like the U11 saloons had a very short life, and in terms of UK sales they did, but they lived out their natural days in other markets. Bluebird models carried on with U12, U13 etc never seen here except as the odd grey import. The Bluebird that was sold here was really a Stanza, hence T12 code (followed on from the understeer-tastic T11 model). It was sold as Stanza in the US, Japan etc.

I was trying to work out why the front looked distorted, then realised it's to do with the reflection off the bull bars!

Posted Image

I'd have preferred a snap of the rarer Volvo F7 in the background!

Posted Image

What odd proportions that thing has!

Posted Image

Must be the tidiest one left on the road - they're always very scruffy normally!

I like this. Particularly as it's survived all this time. There is a High top Fiat Ducato version in the next Village on an E plate - I thought that was going some.

I saw the paintwork on the Astravan and and thought straight away 'that's a Hotpoint service van' - But Pog had already got there, and with the Correct answer :)

Really? That's ultra-rare. I don't even think I've seen a 'Tina on an A-plate.One of my neighbours had a Mk1 Cavalier saloon on a Y-plate, but it was an import from Ireland so presumably had a current-issue suffix before DVLA got tetchy about plates being age-related.

I believe Ford had no problems shifting Cortinas right up to the end of production. It wouldn't surprise me if more Y reg Cortinas survive than Y reg Sierras. I recall seeing an A plate Cortina not too long ago, wish I snapped it now.

  • 1 month later...

Uploaded a few more spots seen over the last month. The price of scrap value is having some serious consequences on the quality of shite of what I've seen recently. Nevermind.

Continuing on the Cortina theme.

I followed this car along the A171 and it wasn't hanging around.

Posted Image

Used as a family car. Makes more sense than a MPV to me.

For Mr Ritmo, who requested a better pic of the Volvo...

A brace of Vauxhalls mostly seen in Newcastle.

A terrible shot - blurry and the bastid flash went off - but one just for Pogweasel. I used to really hate these things, but time, dementure and goodwill to all things BL are softening me up.

First Direct (I think) have an American car on display in each of their stores. Not sure what they're trying to achieve but it certainly attacted me.

Wow, I thought Vauxhall got their rustproofing up to scratch in the late 70's too.... that's just incredible, is it the slam panel or the doubl-skinned front edge visible in front of the lacy bit?

(from the last lot)

Posted Image

Is this mk2-based or mk1 with later front panels? Proportions are a bit odd at the front, the big bumpers aren't big bumpers but small bumpers with an extra bit. And the grille is too far forwards like an uncomfortable overbite. Is the front wing longer between the wheel and grille? Only ever seen one Citi from the back, which was late-mk1 looking.

With regard to 1982 Cortinas mentioned above, my dear old grandfather bought one in July 1982 (VAL788Y, a gold 1.6L) after trading in his green mk3. Apparently although the Sierra was just going on sale, and parked in the showroom, they were having to give discounts on it already where Cortinas were full price! The looks were just putting people off. I think he got his in the last week of July, but they'd put it on a Y plate and asked him not to drive it too far :)

Been browsing through some old brochures this week, particularly the "Ford Cars" comics with plenty of this style of plates on display. Possibly unique to the blue oval press office??
