With this selection you are really spoiling us!Any chance of liberating the rimz of that 323i? I've owned a couple of sets of those, machine up some caps & do some detailing an they look orsumz. Would be nice to apply them to the scratty ex-"hoover service" Astravan. OOF. Are these all from your new 'hood?

Indeed so! Capri on skinny wheels and hub caps was a good start, lots of other goodies too. The B11 Sunny looked clean.Manta A would be my pick though.

I was just thinking about your excitement level over the Manta A. Actually, reading that back, it sounds a bit wrong. Are those bluebirds as per the last pic RWD or FWD?

Starcraft! Fantastic. I didn't know what the hell it was. I thought the cortina mash up was something else, but a Solara? That has to be the ultimate shite.Mr Weasel, roughly the top half were taken in and around the North East, the rest was down in Southampton. Those Bluebirds as far as I know are FWD. I rather liked that Manta too, always wanted one since I was wee.

Err, thanks...Those Bluebirds are not RWD RETRO DRIFT etc etc, they are FWD. Both the green B-plater and the red one are U11 series, they did a facelift on it so it kind of resembled the UK-built T72 series ones that it was sold alongside.In America I think you can get them with a V6, still FWD.

Ah, Bluebirds of that era are confusing. ‘Proper’ U11 Bluebirds did carry on after introduction of the T12/T72 here, but apart from the estate we didn’t get them. So it seemed like the U11 saloons had a very short life, and in terms of UK sales they did, but they lived out their natural days in other markets. Bluebird models carried on with U12, U13 etc never seen here except as the odd grey import.The Bluebird that was sold here was really a Stanza, hence T12 code (followed on from the understeer-tastic T11 model). It was sold as Stanza in the US, Japan etc.

Well certainly the first Sierra, but you could get MkV Cortinas on A & B plates, so they really did crossover.....

A reg cortinas are EXTREMELY thin on the ground.. and B plate ones were only registered in single figures i think.Believe it or not ive been in a C reg one.... an estate used by the BBC as a radio car...

Really? That's ultra-rare. I don't even think I've seen a 'Tina on an A-plate.One of my neighbours had a Mk1 Cavalier saloon on a Y-plate, but it was an import from Ireland so presumably had a current-issue suffix before DVLA got tetchy about plates being age-related.

I believe Ford had no problems shifting Cortinas right up to the end of production. It wouldn't surprise me if more Y reg Cortinas survive than Y reg Sierras. I recall seeing an A plate Cortina not too long ago, wish I snapped it now.

I followed this car along the A171 and it wasn't hanging around.

 

 

Used as a family car. Makes more sense than a MPV to me.

First Direct (I think) have an American car on display in each of their stores. Not sure what they're trying to achieve but it certainly attacted me.

 

 

 

This one was mint and no doubt owned by a silver top.

Wow, I thought Vauxhall got their rustproofing up to scratch in the late 70's too.... that's just incredible, is it the slam panel or the doubl-skinned front edge visible in front of the lacy bit?

Is this mk2-based or mk1 with later front panels? Proportions are a bit odd at the front, the big bumpers aren't big bumpers but small bumpers with an extra bit. And the grille is too far forwards like an uncomfortable overbite. Is the front wing longer between the wheel and grille? Only ever seen one Citi from the back, which was late-mk1 looking.

 

With regard to 1982 Cortinas mentioned above, my dear old grandfather bought one in July 1982 (VAL788Y, a gold 1.6L) after trading in his green mk3. Apparently although the Sierra was just going on sale, and parked in the showroom, they were having to give discounts on it already where Cortinas were full price! The looks were just putting people off. I think he got his in the last week of July, but they'd put it on a Y plate and asked him not to drive it too far

Been browsing through some old brochures this week, particularly the "Ford Cars" comics with plenty of this style of plates on display. Possibly unique to the blue oval press office??

A splendid selection as ever DC. For obvious reasons I am drawn to that Accord, it looks to be in great condition.626 saloon certainly not something you see very often nowadays, my memory suggests they were rare even back in the day as the hatch must've been the more popular and useful version.
