THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

I didn't actually take any pictures today as Hauptsturmführer Watanabe is a much better photographist than me.

A thread will follow....

As for todays little jaunt, the Heep managed to consume an inordinate amount of LPG - as would anything that's pulling close to its own weight for 220 miles and an unladen trailer for another 220ish, but it was worth it. 604 needs a bit more work than I thought, but a team effort between Wat, MM5 and a few other folks should have it looking rather bloody special in a few months.

A nice surprise was discovering that it's not the oddfire 145 bhp 2.7, but the later 155 bhp 2.85 lump as found in 760 Volvos and some other oddball stuff. It's rather bloody quick for a big old barge as I discovered on the top secret Barn of Shite test track shakedown run.

Was loosing a bit of coolant in xantia. Has got worse recently and today checked and the coolant is under pressure. Looks like HG has gone. Apparently bit of a pain in the arse of a job and about 8 hours labour in garage. With impending move and missus going into hospital on wednesday I think that it is at the end of its life.

It has got so many things that need doing that it just isnt worth it

At least it means I might be able to get something a bit more exciting or saaby :)

Nice way to end my birthday..

Fitted a new fuel filter and wiper blades to TV2. More jobs ticked-off of my 'to do' list :)

Yo Shep, I saw an amazingly shite 740 estate on Star Lane today, white but covered in algae, looked like it had spent the last 15 years parked under a tree! Reg was F121 OTO I think, definitely one to look out for :)

Funny enough i saw a H reg Volvo 740 Estate in grey for sale up my road tonight on the way home from work but as it was dark i couldn't see the price, looked pretty tidy though.

I'll keep a look out for it :)

Not far from my current location there are two foxed Volvo estates (a late-1980s 740 and an early-1990s 940) which were probably the same shade of red as The Volvo when they were new, but are both now a sort of grotty matt pink :(

Yes, you have to take the engine out, It is too close to the subframe to get the sump off in place. Good news is that 1256 viva engines come out easily and are not heavy

also, I'd check for leaks from timing case, pushrod covers and both crank seals while you have it out.

I suspect the Headgasket has gone on the Micra. If it has its between the water jacket and an oil gallery.

The symptoms are:

Its using water.

It run for more than an hour it'l overheat.

Theres 'mayo' under the oil filler cap.

Very slight rough running when cold.

However, it seems to just keep working, I don't go very far in it so the overheating isn't a problem and I can't really afford to fix it at the moment.

What's a headgasket like to do on a 1.2 k10 micra. It looks like it should be reasonably simple...

Well the little 205 I have bought is a complete lemon!

The reason it won't start is that its fucking hydrolocked as the cylinders are full of water. So I don't know what to do with it now, it will need an engine rebuild I guess and I haven't got the time or inclination to do it so if anyone wants this little paperweight then let me know. Embarassed? Much.

What a shame, gutted for you. Take it there's no-one you know who could fit a second hand engine for you if you found one? Incidentally I think you'd still see a fair old price for it on an internet auction site so hpefully you won't lose out and may infact make a couple of quid out of it.

If the rest of the car is good - the bodywork, interior etc I would be tempted to look out for a secondhand engine - although I realise the days when every breakers and salvage yard had two or three examples in stock* are over.

*Usually after a major car/hedge interaction

Having driven a 205 with a 306 XSi engine in it, can I suggest that as an engine donor? Bloody hell does that make an exciting car!

BX GTi (8V) engines are the same. Just please don't buy a good un for the engine only.

Thanks for the support guys,

Is the engine really fubared? If I fitted a head gasket would it cure it you think? My sister thinks I should keep it in the garden and just do it in little stages - I'm not in any hurry for it to be on the road. Trouble is that I don't have access to ramps or anything. its a shame nobody on here lives closer and could give me a hand with it. Beer and fags would be on tap for you!

You defo don't live near me as my nan passed away about 20 years ago now and her pies were horrible.

I suppose you might get away with a headgasket but is there a chance the water ingress may have caused further damage to the engine? It'd be well worth whizzing the block off whilst you were there I expect and checking condition of bores and pistons etc.

At the risk of starting a heated debate.... 406 Turbo conversion?

Haha Cavette! Your nan made lovely pies. Filled me right up.

Yeah I think 6 years of sitting won't have done the bores any favours. I think I will zap it on eBay unless anybody wants it for 250 quid? Obviously come and collect it...

I'd do it up chief. They're sleeping giants in the money stakes and (more importantly) absolutely ace fun to drive. If not a 1.6 lump could you not score a 1.9 from somewhere?

Posted

Fleet progress this week. Sod all really. BX doesn't seem to be losing as much coolant, but I'm going to drive it 200 miles tomorrow, so we'll see how it copes with that.

Shame about the 205 :(

Could you still not whip the head off and inspect everything ?

You may be lucky and only need a new Headgasket (and minor headskim)

Failing that, a nice Mi conversion would create a secret weapon 8)

If you for some reason want to sell the black sunroof plastic strip - Please say

My news (Peugeot related) - Rotor arm an dizzy cap arrived today .... and it's the wrong one, i don't understand how the parts supplier got it wrong, i even gave them the reg'

In other news a brand new carb' has been ordered :D

Why do you need a brand new carb? It was running fine before?

I stuck the bonnet prop and side vent back on. Incredible stuff, but then again everything is working at the moment (well the idle is too high, but may just have to put up with that for now

The bush for the butterfly on the choke is foobared (I could spin another one on a lathe, but don't have the time at the moment)

So an already cheap replacement has been sourced.

Beacause Peugeot are a royal pain in the arse, and built cars out of whatever they found lying around and never bothered to tell anyone.

Ducellier or Paris Rhone or Bosch or Valeo or Sev Marshall electrics, ATE or Bendix or Girling or Teeves brakes, Solex, weber, Zenith or Stromberg carbs etc etc etc....

Hold a wet finger up in the air and guess!

Can you tell I was once a Peugeot storeman?
