Rusty Pelican Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Lessons and one test in a Talbot Sunbeam 1.0 ( really 930cc ) , second test in a Sunbeam Stiletto ( mine , ) then FINALLY passed back in the instructors Sunbeam , Sunbeams wernt too bright ( ) regarding me passing my test , this in 1981
garbaldy Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Took my test in the driveing instructors datsun sunny with over 300k miles on the clock and managed 42 in a 30 limit drove the parents cars for practice and then my first car so that would be a viva, reno 18, audi 80 quattro, escort mk2 van, bedford cf luton very good with L plates on
lancashireclamper Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 1979 Citroen Dyane, (bought for £150 when I was 16)1988 Nissan Sunny 4 door saloon (Instructors car, passed test in Oct 89)My Instructor was also female and had a 'down to earth' sense of humour
carlo Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Took my lessons in Pinner Driving School's Austin 1300 and found it hard work, always remember the instructor telling me to wait for the front of the car to rise on its suspension to know when you'd hit the clutch biting point - certainly buggered that up a fair few times.Failed my first test in my mum's Fiat 850 Coupe (instructor being too fat to fit in properly and not being able to do the seat belt up didn't help). Passed in a lovely Renault 5TL in 1982. Felt so excited I drove round to my girlfriend's to take her out for a spin but she wasn't interested. Chucked her a month after that.
Milford Cubicle Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 A 2005 Clio DCi owned by the instructor, it had 666 miles on the clock when I first drove it which didn't bode well, but I passed my test first time.I liked the car, but it wasn't at all shite.
pompei Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 6 driving lessons in Datsun 120Y. Loads of practice and took test in dad's Fiat 124.
Cavcraft Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Circa 1981: had 'proper' lessons in a Talbot Sunbeam with some right dickhead for an instructor and also learnt to drive in my dad's Talbot Alpine 1.5LS (DHG 511W I think), and then passed in his Cavalier SR.I took my test in the Cav on account of the fact the gobbsy plastic Scouse wanker of an instructor didn't actually turn up. I celebrated passing by nearly crashing an hour later and putting a fag burn in the driver's seat so was subsequently banned by my dad from using his car
Spottedlaurel Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Peugeot 205 diesel 3dr, in which I failed my first test. Also drove my mum's '81 Cherry a lot, so started taking my lessons in that (for a small reduction in the instructor's fees) and passed in it second time round. It then became my first car.Passed IAM test in 1994 in my beloved Datsun 160J SSS.Can't believe you're so young MC!
Rusty Pelican Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Can't believe you're so young MC!Nor me I tend to get mental images of what people on here are like , age etc and MC did seem older somehow
Cavcraft Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Maybe he was a late starter?I reckon he's a silver surfer, one of those 'life begins at 72' types who got tired of looking out of the nursing home window
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 2001 BSM Corsa. Made me like old cars :lol:I was pretty jealous when I noticed BSM are now using Fiat 500s.
Milford Cubicle Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Can't believe you're so young MC!Nor me I tend to get mental images of what people on here are like , age etc and MC did seem older somehow Hey I'm only 23! Going on 73.
FredTransit Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I picked the driving school cos they had Mk2 escorts. Towards the end they changed to a Mk3 without telling me they were selling the mk2 (I would have bought it if so, daytona 4 door with a black vinyl roof). I pitied the bloke they turned up to the test in the Mk3 without telling him about the change. This was in 1985/6
ashmicro Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Both learned to drive and passed my test in this: Loved that car.
M'coli Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 1982 Cortina Crusader 1.6 for both. Also for this car, prior to the test:During February with enough rain to demand speed 2 on the wipers, had the brake master cylinder fail on the A82 above Tarbert on Loch Lomondside whilst on the way to pick up some slates from a derelict house my dad knew of. Was forced by my father to drive back down the lochside, pumping the brakes, with a boot full of slates - this was a year before the new road opened, so plenty twisty.April, towed three-quarter of a ton of sandstone in the trailer with a quarter of a ton in the boot up the 1-in-6 Carman hill out of the Renton (are you beginning to get the impression that my Dad had this idea about "free" building materials - he also had this idea about having lots of L plates on the car - 6 in total) - read the highway code about towing! After passing the test:Not having properly maintaed the car because my dad couldn't be arsed, it stalled on me coming out of the driveway (blind corner on a 60mph road) and got T-boned, writing the car off. Best thing I ever did to it!!!Dad bought a Passat estate after that, and less time in total was spent fixing it in the next 12 years than each year on the Cortina. (Sorry Dave!)
pogweasel Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Took my driving test in an M-reg Metro 1.1... for regular viewers this might explain a few things. Most of the learning was done in my B-reg Skoda Estelle, including adventures in snow and traversing exmoor during horrific thunderstorms. However, the lack of N/S mirror, slightly whiffy interior and general air of decaying eastern bloc crud would have guaranteed an instant fail, hence the need to use the L-school's Metrover.
warren t claim Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Although I took my test in a BSM Metro back in 1987 when I was a mere 17 year old most of my "lessons" were in a Montego 1.3 or my own Hunter with whoever was lucky enough to be older than me "instructing". Can't do that nowadays....
HillmanImp Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 1991 Nissan Sunny - instructor1992 Reanult 19 - Dads car1992 Citroen AX - Mums car1989 Sierra Sapphire - Girlfriends uncles car1984 Austin mini called Ralphie. Friend at school who was stupid enough to let me drive her car.
reallyloud Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I learned to drive in 3 very different cars, I took lessons in my instructors K10 Micra, my old mans Volvo 240 estate and my first car a VW 1302S. This was back in the summer of 1990, I passed my test about 6 months later.
scooters Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 lessons in: Austin Metro, Datsun SunnyTest in: Citroen BX 19 TZD - dad's pride and joypracticed in:Renner 5Volvo 240 DL Estate
Richard Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 First instructor's car was a B plate Orion 1.3. I missed a couple of appointments and never went back. Eventually I got another instructor who had a D plate Nissan Sunny. At the same time I was practising in my dad's Volvo 244DL. I should have sat my test in the Volvo, but I sat it in the Nissan and failed miserably. I've never got along with Japanese cars since. Some months later I applied for my test again. It took 5 months in those days so I had plenty time to organise more lessons- except I got a cancellation with 12 hours to spare. I sat it without insurance in my mother's Viva Estate. It had massive holes in the wings and I'd only driven it a couple of times- in fact I'd only driven at all a couple of times in the four months since I failed my first test. Despite all that I passed.
M'coli Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 It had massive holes in the wings and I'd only driven it a couple of times- in fact I'd only driven at all a couple of times in the four months since I failed my first test. Despite all that I passed. There's a lot to be said for worrying about things other than the driving test itself!
pogweasel Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Despite stalling. speeding and generally not paying too much attention on my test, I still passed, and that was with the examiner known to be a total knut (would fail you if you didn't select 5th at 40mph FFS). And I found a £50 note in the car park of the test centre. Lucky day? You bet your life it was.
Milford Cubicle Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 My driving examiner pretended to be asleep a couple of times to catch me out, he was well known for it.
Jonnyvalenta Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 My instructor had a couple of Maestros, both 1.3 HLE models,so I had lessons in one of those, also passed my test in it! I always got the same one for lessons, just as well as they were probably both very different to drive. Once I'd passed,my Dad's Avenger was procured and pressed into service,a two-door model it was, with a vinyl roof that only went about 3/4 back along the roof, very strange....
Waderider Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Mini Clubman HLE, metallic blue, Norn Irish reg AXI 8010.Learnt the finer arts of car control in that; nothing like coming round a country lane corner 'full lit' to find a farmers mud and slurry coating the tarmac and changing the driving characteristics. No photos unfortunately.
The Liberator Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Test/driving lessons in instructor's D plate Metro 1.0LOther lessons in my mum's 1984 Metro 1.0LBefore-the-age-of-17 clutch control lessons in my dad's company Cavalier GLi.Passed in October 1988, my dad let me celebrate by driving him to B&Q to buy some screws. Nearly crashed halfway back, when he shouted 'Fuck My Boots!' very loudly: he'd been counting the contents of the packet, and found one missing.
