Car cum Trailer

Was answering a question regarding making a trailer out of a car soooo thought i'd share some pics

Ive always fancied making a trailer out of an old escort or maestro van or something. they look ideal candidates for a bit of chopping and welding with their leaf springs and axle positioning.

The lad who made the red Fiat 500 trailer had all sorts of problems with its suspension. I forget now what he used to sort it but there's a whole lot of ingenuity gone into making those items.

As a general rule i think half car trailers look utterly shit, however I'll make an exception for the Corsair based one... good effort!

2005 and the insurance company told him it had to be cut-up so I picked it up did the honours and it's carried my camping gear to loads of shows over the years.

The Cosair trailer would have been much better without the headlights and grille. Just smoothing the front off to a point would have made it look like a proper trailer. That's where these things fall down. How many proper trailers have headlights and a grille? None. What would be better IMO is a trailer that mimmicks the shape of the car but has the features of a trailer.

must admit I dont like these 'half car' trailers.If your going to have a trailer, then get a proper one - not some weird half car heath-robinson creation.Saw an Opel Manta with a half-manta trailer not long ago and all I could think of was what a waste of a car and its parts.

I rather like them and have done since I saw a mini pulling half a mini as a trailer. I like the idea of a half polo breadvan as having much more room and security than my camping trailer.Why dont I do it? Because I think that cars pulling a "car" trailer that doesnt match (like a WV puling a Ford) look hairy gash to me. So unless I make one out of a Zafira-B I will be sticking with my little Erde trailer....

Im of the "make a shit car into something useful" school of thought. It doesnt have to actually look that great aslong as its sturdy and useful.

I hat these car trailers, I file them alongside 'shorty minis' as a sort of zany idea with a shit outcome, thats been done 1000 times already. This one looks particularly toss I find.

I think that Corsair one has to be about the best I've seen. Its been done to a high quality rather than just being a lash up and the shape just works well.

agreed that corvair does look bloody good, i have a spare passat sat here doing nothing, estate trailer for mine would go down a treat

There's a Capri one going about, possibly a Mk2, that I didnt think looked bad. I reckon it was a caravan rather than a trailer. This was however 6+ years ago when it seemed to be quite original - to me atleast.

+1 on that.Worked with a guy that had a white Corsair identical to that, seemed to be far more lively than the Mini Cooper S that he ditched for it.

I saw a R4 van towing half a R4 van about 20years ago in France and since then have always wanted to replicate it, when I had a Fiesta Courier I got as far as buying an identical one with crash damage with half an eye on cutting the front end off and sticking a towhitch on it. Floor rot, lack of welding ability and the need to clear the remains from my parents' drive put the idea to a premature end
