Which site should I try?

I'd say YouTube or that. I've just sent you a message on Instagram.

thats very odd. I can't see why an immobiliser fault would stop the dashboard lights coming on, yet any electrical problem that would stop them coming on surely wouldn't crank the engine

I'd say try some basics. Is it sparking? Is there fuel getting through? How do those era Renault immobilisers work?  Is the battery in the key ok?

I've experienced that with a Rover R8 and it was indeed the immobiliser.  Dead battery in the key, as @wesacosa suggests could be a cause.  It lets just enough fuel through to prime things and that's it.

Crank position sensor could also be a candidate, again another R8 experience, it would do all the things it should to start but not let fuel through.  Change the key fob battery first (assuming it has one) and go from there.

Sounds like a battery that doesn't have enough strength to power everything. Perhaps needs charging up, or replacement. Or, as mentioned, bad battery connection.

You are not the only one on here wrestling with an early Safrane!

@Andyrew and I have a RT V6 Auto, Andy has done a load of work but it is still fighting us on several fronts.

Liked for the picture. Phase 1 or 2 these are lovely looking cars. I love mine and still look back at it when I park up.

I still haven't forgotten about this one and would probably be in the position of being able to take it back on in a few months time, should you have enough of it.

I’ll try that. I replaced the crank sensor last week and it fixed nothing, so I’ll try the key battery

I’ve jump started the car before multiple times, and it just isn’t for it. Perhaps a fully charged battery would help, but it’s still trial and error

Unfortunately the key battery replacement has solved nothing. I do also recall a low battery in the past having lit the dashboard lights, yet very dim.

surely if there's enough battery to crank it into firing it's not the battery? and if there's not enough battery to light up the dashboard lights there's not gonna be enough to crank it

after it's fired and cut out what happens if you try again? Does it do the same or just not fire or not even crank?

also , do these have some form of code reading? OBD1  maybe? or flashing codes?

I can try and try again with starting it and I get similar results each time.
Unfortunately this Safrane seems too old for OBD. The phase 2’s had OBD2 I believe.

does it have some way of reading codes with an LED?  I know a lot of 90s pre OBD cars do (my 97 XM does for instance, as did my 93 Mazda Eunos) They either have a port somewhere or you short out wires somewhere. worth a Google

I know this is no help but my phase 2 has its ( very basic from what I understand) one port under the centre arm rest. Have you had a peek in that area to see if there is any kind of port?

I have. Nothing there unfortunately.

Highest (and only) bidder on this so far. Would certainly use it as a daily until the MOT is up, then I can do a switcheroo for the manual seats, and probably put ones from a Laguna back in.

I know. Won’t go too high I don’t think. If it was someone here who’s doing it…

…you’re a prick.

I am not, I am looking at diesel ones within easy reach of where I am for taking home with me.

P.s. please win it and bring it to Chodmondeley so I can have a go 😂

I’ll probably have to get my dad to collect it next Tuesday, but I’d probably take it to Radwood on the 7th.

Wish Radwood wasn't so far south this year, otherwise I'd consider coming. Would be great to see a Safrane there.

I do wonder how well supported Radwood will be in Chatham but if the XM or Panda is running (possible) and not sold (probable) I might go and find out

Nice! Hopefully you can use one to trouble shoot the other and get both going!

Then keep both? 😂
