You sure you've popped your bodywork cherry on this, cos that is a mighty fine job fora beginner.  Must be all of those Boiler front panels you've given a lick over with aerosol 'appliance white'

i learned my craft rattle canning pushbikes when I was a kid, you learn good aerosol control when your painting bike frames.

I've been a subscriber to car mechanics mag for 20 odd years. I was just making it up as I went along. Taking your time is a big part of it. I reckon if I rushed it, it would have been a balls up.

I did once brush paint a raleigh chopper black and white with household gloss when I was about ten (37 years ago ffs). Not sure if that counts though.

The problem.with filler is it's porosity.  If you fill holes, you need to paint the reverse side of the panel. To stop moisture getting in.  Assuming all the rust is gone.

Hence why filler in wheel arches is a temporary fix, cause you never get to the inside.

I made a nice job of the filler cap yesterday. Just using a scraper thing. I then t-cut it to get the remnants off. I'll be removing at least one light today and having a go at that.682a9a58befc72746e58f40767b33059.jpge17ad7d6155ac701edfb1d034de45aaf.jpg

It's out. It had been siliconed on it the past. All the clips are broken. More rust discovered. decfa94083c39b32da35c6c101fac728.jpg0265d4b53c94515987c3d54b9c4679ed.jpgee948a108856f0b37a400c370ac573b9.jpg

what is the little round grille for ? I've never noticed that before - is there a bulb behind it ?

Great job, the shoes are working, where did you get them?
Some advert on face book when I was pissed. £80 from the states iirc.

It's where the headlight squirters pop out from. The covers are missing but Are £22 a pair on ebay. For two small bits of plastic.

All done. The grille is all chipped. I'm either gonna rub it down and satin black it, or body colour it.

I'm not sure what it would've been originally.

Combining the family daily walk to go to toolstation to get a snide dremmel. It'll make grinding/sanding etc a lot less tiresome.a91b360c31a912674bdebd335948b54a.jpg

Grand. Mini is looking much better with the silver bits back. Pretty sure a new grille will be only a few quid and cheaper than paint etc?

I already have all the paint etc.
It'll give me something to do indoors if it does piss down anyway.baf814f13bfbd5520b023e028f17bb60.jpg

Or you could buy some rustoleum chrome paint for about £15 and give that a whirl?

Definitely looks better with chrome on it, impressed with the work so far!

Posted

I think the grille looks better black, to add further confusion to the situation

Posted

I googled it and originally it came with a black, chrome and body coloured grille from the factory. Very helpful.

I remember Car Mechanics Mag when a ‘repair’ consisted of some Ali Mesh, Plastic Padding Elastic and Holts Duplicolour.

I remember my grandad melting lead in a saucepan and slapping that over rusty holes!   I was exposed to all the fumes and chemicals and it never did me any hnnnnngggghhhhh

I think the grille is meant to be chromed....and the air scoop should probably be body colour or chromed if you are looking for a factory look.  But it seems with all the customisation options it could have been literally anything when built so go with what you like!
