I'm not after a perfect job. Just something half tidy. Anything's better than a car covered in scabs.

Haha, that's what everyone says until they try to do a DIY rattlecan repair on a metallic car because it usually ends up looking way way worse

The paint, primer and laquer arrived yesterday. Watch this space.

There's a good chance of it getting matt blacked and turning zombie apocalypse style at the end of it.

A bit like @TheDoctor's rover touring.

"Proper" Minis had that much rust at their first service.

Don't forget the old giffer trick if it goes bad,

Randomly placed GB stickers or reflectors over the patches.

Good luck with the painting though.

Quality masking and primer added.

Do I need to rub it down again?

Yes. I used to be a perv for sanding down filler when I worked in a garage, especially on rough old ERF lorry cabs.

Depends on the finish you wish to achieve.

I would be tempted to let it dry and try to feather in the blend between primer and the original paint a bit more, you can also nip over the primer to key it and get rid of any shite in it but try not to go through on the edges to filler/metal.  If you do just give it a quick prime in the areas that do go through again before you do the basecoat.

Remember the basecoat is not to be shiney when you a put it on, hard to describe but you want to start the can spraying on its way to the panel and bring it in,  doing light even coats,  The laquer stage is the shine.

That doesn't look half bad so far. ?

£25 for 500mls of primer and laquer with 400mls of colour.
Probably £40 for bits in total and I have enough to do it 10 times over.

Not mint but barely noticable and 100% better. A little bit primer over spray on the rear quarter window.
I reckon a t-cut and a good polish and you won't be able to tell.7adf0b739478939ae5b84cce298e1805.jpgc8da0e6d079b810ed049d64df06b748b.jpg

The 'masking' tape has pulled the shitty black paint off the chrome ring around the light.
Without using more tape what would be a good way to remove the rest?

Just ‘de-nib’ it really, a really light whiz over with a very fine grade, that is wot I normally does.

I’d try a hot air gun or a meticulous few hours with a razor blade

According to the Internet, Coke cleans anything if you leave it to soak overnight.

Preferable to drinking the shite anyway.

After work I'm gonna do some dechavarising. This is the petrol cap Cover I removed with a torx bit. It't like a rubber compound and picks off quite easily.
I going to remove the headlights and get the black stuff off the headlight surrounds as well.
The headlight aim is far too low. I going to look into that while they're out.
I've already removed the go faster oranjee stickers.

Our R56 does that headlight adjustment thing when it starts except that they adjust up not down. I wonder if something was put back in the wrong way when the bezels were originally painted matt black.

Tool station primer, satin black and lacquer are fine, all cellulose based and i'be used primer and lacquer on Alloy wheels (with sparkle silver in between'.  I've used statin black on lots of stuff, it would be ideal for sills etc

check out the  lacquer though, I can't recall my toolstation stuff being plasticiote, I will check

Lowers the blood pressure as you spray it on?

Mine start out fine then they adjust down about a second after switching them on. Exactly the opposite.

I wonder if they fitted the fuse upside down?

That’s looks like a great job, regarding vatcan you’re supposed to apply filler to bare metal for best adhesion, does it stick ok to a vatcan treated panel?

You sure you've popped your bodywork cherry on this, cos that is a mighty fine job fora beginner.  Must be all of those Boiler front panels you've given a lick over with aerosol 'appliance white'

i learned my craft rattle canning pushbikes when I was a kid, you learn good aerosol control when your painting bike frames.

No idea. But won't rust just pop through the filler?
