I wonder who bought the MGB Fastback conversions that Ashley's did. There was a good reason why there were a few custom MGB conversions in Australia, BMC believed that assembly of the MGB Fastback would be too expensive in Australia, so some companies made knock offs like these:

Both of these conversions are compared against the original Fastback in this article from Modern Motor, October 1966:

Our janitor from primary school had a M-reg K70, bought new when he left the army. Sort of a cross between an early 70s Audi and a 1st generation Passat.   A metallic blue greeny colour (bleen?).

He kept it until the early 1990s.  I know this because I co-incidentally met him and his lovely wife in a hotel lift in Tenerife in 1995.  Just turned around and he was there. It's him!!!. I was rather pissed you know. He didn't remember me from 1976 to 1980. Oh well.  But we had a pint at the bar during that holiday.  His wife, who I'd never met before, was well fit, especially dressed for Tenerife.

Sadly, neither janitor or K70 are with us any more. Or the 1960s school with it's novel leaky flat roof (demolished and replaced about 20 years ago).  RIP Geoff, top bloke. Helped my younger bro when he fell and split his head open against a drainpipe.

Wonder what happened to the Uren Cortina Mk4 3.0, fascinates me how unique stuff like this ends up in obscurity.

That would have been turquoise. If it had quad headlights, that would make it a K70 LS, with an 1807cc 100hp engine. The LS could do 0-60 in about 10.5, but no power steering in those days, so it was never a quick business trying to park it!

About the first thing I said to him was 'Do you still have that Volkswagen saloon'.   Followed by 'How's Jayne?' (his gorgeous daughter, a year older than me, who had gone on to become a nurse.  Oh lordy!).

When I had a K70 in about 1990, it was one of 12 known survivors in Britain. Only 800 RHD cars were sold here between 1971 and 1975. Apart from the oil filter, none - and I mean absolutely none - of the parts on a K70 were shared with any other contemporary VW.

Even less popular than the Citroën C6, which managed 1200 sales!

Another V6, this time from May 1971, right at the start of Mk3 production.  KEV ...J appear to have been used for Ford publicity pics, I have pics of various sporty Mk1 Escorts with similar reg.

This Cortina has the 3.44 diff, same as 2-litre Capris, totally useless with a lazy torquey V6. Even the 3.09 diff is a bit under geared.  I had a few 3-litre Capris very late 80s / 90-ish, including a rather rapid 1979 Mk3 with Holley and a Piper cam which gave it a lovely uneven burbly tickover through the twin pipes.

One day at a petrol station I got chatting to a flash showoff type guy who had an Essex powered early 70s Marcos, and he later took me along the road in the Marcos which had a 3.44 diff. It was shit, far too low geared, but he thought it was the dog's bollocks, the engine was screaming it's head off at about 90. Jumped into the old Mk3 and he couldn't believe the difference, looooong first and second gears. Next time I saw that guy he'd bought a late 70s Corvette 350 auto.

I helped save an orange and a gold one that had been off the road for years. There are probably more than 12 now known in the uk, plus imports.

The K70 was essentially a re-badged NSU as VW bought them out with the car almost ready to go. Must have been a big deal when VW customers were used to Beetles and types 2/3/4 with rear mounted air cooled engines.

First "proper" FWD VW was the Scirroco, a few months before the Golf was launched

Road test of a different car, a facelift one.  Note Granada driving lamps flushed in, very neat, looks 'right'. Can't have quarter-bumpers at the same time though.

Apparently these turbo conversions were a bit like enclosing the carb in a pressurised biscuit-tin. Still impressive results for the period. Reliability? Who knows.

Aah, turbocharging in 1973, little did they know what was to come.
