Rusty VW bothering - incoming non-VW addition….

Parcel with stater arrives at 11:10. Lunch break at midday comprised a mug of soup downed whilst extracting this:

new one has a much smaller motor, but apparently the same amount of oomph - given the state of the old one this seems very feasible! It’s the original and lasted about 36 years which isn’t a bad effort!

main wire needed a clean up as well, doubles as starter and charging cable, so suspect an improvement in electron movement now I have removed this rust!

inspection now it is off confirms the copper wire is just rotten, it’s gone almost like fabric. It’s only a sort length that is soldered on inside with a crimp terminal on the outside, so will rewire and keep it as a spare for when the new one inevitably shits itself a month after the warranty expires:

All works now though, starts much more convincingly as well which is nice.

now one kid can’t see out, but that’s tough as I’m looking cool*

So, with the essentials sorted it was time to leave - the plan, eldest does theatre performance, collect her, get to Frankley services for the night (living the high life) pop in and see some mates then the ferry to Northern Spain, then Portugal.
Parked outside mates house were two very different beasts neither theirs, their Vito had FTP’d on the way back from skiing and was somewhere still in deepest France):

fixed.

after some investigations it was tracked back to some sausage frying earlier in the day. And breathe.

Next was back up to Bilbao - crazy museum IMG_6532.jpeg.ae70e9727162932860bcfa124d05291a.jpeg

Then back home.  About 1000 miles in Spain, and another 600 miles getting to Portsmouth and back. Only issue was 1l of oil used which is a bit higher than ideal, and a reluctance to idle when cold which needs a look at.

Some tweaks to be made then it’s 4 weeks to another brief trip this time to Scotland.

T'other looks like a Simca 1100 to me, like the brown one that was driven here from Spain.

Yep Simca 1100, and a Seat 600D

Renault 4 I think peeping in on the right.

Well the roof tent wasn’t great, and the manufacturer claimed that a new magic liner would solve all - so needed to give it a try before 3 weeks living in it this summer. So where to take it….. somewhere close I guess for a quick test…. Hmmmmm……

Well for the first weekend of half term we were in Newcastle visiting some friends so makes sense to turn it into a week and try the tent. Anywhere nice near Newcastle we wondered? Booked nicest site that we could find nearby:

IMG_6690.png.eee1ac4e7210f41278f62142c14a4bb9.png

that’s got it. In total 600 miles there (and the miles seemed to get longer once we got into the Cairngorms!).

Somewhere in the gloom is Ben Nevis, and smeared over the countryside is about  a litre of 20w50 oil - not sure where it’s going but the engine has been working hard:

IMG_6670.jpeg.396db493cc7d1170e86d525530dc57e2.jpeg

Got us here though - it’s a proper campsite but not like any I’ve stayed on before! Views out to Skye and the Hebrides.

Only down side was it’s not that flat - campsites shop will sell me levelling chocks for £how much or a quick rummage on the beach for some stones!

IMG_6674.jpeg.0743d98e442cbe9a24a9e46307987354.jpeg

Not seen any shite - campsite is full of shiny new vans, and the roads are broadly empty., but will keep an eye out, if I can see through these clouds of midges……

I have noticed a correlation that those with big ‘swamper’ wheels seem much more likely to be on a tarmac or gravel pitch. The access to that pitch was up a steep sand track, but some momentum and some (unevenly worn!) budget mud and snow commercial van tyres seemed to do the trick…. Most of the good spots in the dunes are taken with older vans on road tyres.

Back to more fixing and less travel blog! MOT is due which means I had three urgent tasks to do - a hole within 30cm of the shock top mount to weld, the shite running cold and most importantly the washer jets that had stopped squirting.

Since I fitted the new starter it has been running crap on choke, and seemed a bit down on power. Seemed a coincidence too large, so assumed I had broken something. I have been fiddling with the choke for a while trying to get it better, but no real change. Pulled the plugs for clues:

IMG_6792.jpeg.3eef27ae690690857c4f682d761a3d84.jpeg

very dry and no real deposits, which is odd as they tend to be a bit sooty/oily on these so assume running lean. So started looking for air leaks - when I found this

IMG_6794.jpeg.a92bb4b1a1b632439c2361b8231b384d.jpeg

a bit of vacuum hose with a bolt in.  Peering down the end is the remains of a brass tube:

IMG_6795.jpeg.fe0246c9d57ac25d3c22bc6a55c474f8.jpeg

I know where this is from - PO had blocked off a vacuum port round the back of the carb which used to operate a hot/cold flap mechanism. It wasn’t pretty but it worked, until my fat hand had caught it whilst getting to the top bolt of the starter. Easy fix with a bit of metal expoy putty:

IMG_6797.jpeg.6cbb136d646c6f4053f136ac0dd8c85c.jpeg

Running all fixed, no longer stalls all the time whilst cold, and seems to have regained a little more ooomph. Always amazed how much effect a small hole in the inlet has.

Whilst it wasn’t on the list of jobs, the poxy fuel pump base was seeping oil again so made up some new gaskets. Used the finest gasket paper in my cupboard:

IMG_6798.jpeg.323dfd111d671c385d52346ca07720f0.jpeg

Next was this hole - this is upside down, there is a this steel sheet between a top and bottom chassis rail. It’s only job is to keep stuff out the engine bay, but MOT man won’t allow any holes as it’s all within prescribed distance of various bits: IMG_6799.jpeg.efea1e7c49dbf8da6cfdee02ee322c75.jpeg

other side

IMG_6800.jpeg.bd436ac24f8589c5c0b711f09ec1dc3b.jpeg

Chopped out the grot and welded pâtés in - no photos as phone went flat at this point, but soon had it looking better

IMG_6802.jpeg.0dfca80244ff284d47cc51206282ee9e.jpeg

and finished:IMG_6804.jpeg.23ed79bb0e7da1aec2f771820e2d6166.jpeg

whilst I was rolling around underneath I also treated all the various bits of rust underneath again, and touched up underseal on the bits that get the worst of the stones and spray

Poked the washer jets with a pin and they are back in business.

So now just need to get a new tyre to replace the one with a scrubbed side (must finished new suspension bushes and get tracking done!) and then will pop it in for an MOT.

Very nice thread. Much thumbs up from me to repair/drive and enjoy car as it's meant to be. Great work Sir!

First thing - tyre.

Hmm… not sure the breaker bar is supposed to be the bit that breaks.

IMG_6831.jpeg.7ba1c555bba02bb64a81f831d88cc1e3.jpeg

This is less good:

IMG_6833.jpeg.46b44d6d3cab93a53f3aeef29c5e2403.jpeg

given tracking is still slightly* out I have gone for a high quality tyre - I think the name is perfect for a tyre:

IMG_6834.jpeg.1bda8847484a80ed3737fa7c118c75a8.jpeg

Yep, that really does say triangle, allegedly China’s premium tyre brand. It is however a proper van tyre, has shit loads of tread and was £67 fitted so will do until the tracking can be sorted, which is after the suspension bushes are done.

Asked the chap in kwik fit to blow it up to 43psi for me, but he only managed 30psi, not sure why it’s so hard for them, it’s not like air costs money.

Next was to cause massive self harm to my arms, and whilst I was at I try and make the internal lock pull work on the drivers door:

access

IMG_6842.jpeg.825a3f14d951ad7444a2c8c6b50ff335.jpeg

this plastic bit had stretched and needed glueing on:

IMG_6844.jpeg.92aa4f77555623971e8ee4be0c7d31c6.jpeg

All sorted I have lobbed it in for an MOT. Now waiting on a bench to see how much money and effort is going to be needed over the next few days!!

Van washed. Van hoovered. Oil changed, and starter motor bush changed to increase starting ease. Bike rack procured for youngest sprogs bike trailer and second youngest sprogs bike. New number plate sorted (and it only took the chap in Halfords three goes to get it right).

So with everything* sorted it was time to leave. Destination Oulu, northern Finland, time Friday morning.

Dull bit - north Wales to Harwich. Mostly traffic, many accidents and roadworks. However, by Friday evening we had made ferry 1 - Harwich to the Hoek Holland.  Shite spotting was low, but the kids loved this lorry at the port a bit too much

IMG_6965.jpeg.2b5458971ccd9b308a05858f633f9ef0.jpeg

Saturday was the long slog from Holland up through northern Germany to Travemunde for ferry number 2. Stopped for some food and general leg stretch in Bremen -

this was Roland and the Rathouse

On the way I made the mistake of using the rear wash wipe to see the loons on the autobahn approaching at 100mph+ and was rewarded by the smell of very hot plastic. Not ideal - motor has given up and toasted the washer fluid pipe and some wires before the fuse finally went pop:

IMG_6975.jpeg.ad2a47ec935b7cda15c2ad499d23ef61.jpeg

but we had the full meal package, so was never more than a couple of hours from some more German/Finnish fusion cuisine (this year with added British influences as baked beans made an appearance).

Monday was a potter around Helsinki with friends before the car train north. This chap was parked up on a side road and clearly nuts  - India to London in 100 days, 48 countries

Next is chod spotting in Finland, with a return in a couple of weeks to Latvia, where the streets are paved with old motors…..

Jurmala is on the list for the loop back - did Riga and never made it quite that far last time. Open to all Latvian suggestions!

I worked there as a consultant to Lattelekom and my visits were just a few days at a time advising on a new IT system so very much flying, literally, visits to review progress so I never really saw much.

Visiting Jurmala was the one non business thing I did; I think Andrew the client  project manager wanted to encourage me to return especially as he wasn't being charged for my time, my boss was an old mate of his.

My missus did love the Baltic Amber jewellery which unfortunately has got lost over the years.

Sorry that I can't be of more help.

If you're self contained, there's a fantastic old fort you can stay in at Daugavpils. I stayed a couple of years ago and it was a bit eerie at night but I suspect it'll be gentrified by now.

Also, Kolkas Pagas is a beautiful spot, where the Gulf of Riga meets the Baltic sea. It's €3 to park during the day, and only €10 overnight. There are toilets and access to water there.

When you will be at Riga you need to go to Riga Motor Museum. It's located next to Bikernieki race track. It's must have place when you are there. ;)

So where was I - a combination of using too much data and a series of broken phones has meant I’ve not kept up with my adventures.

Oulu motor museum has been on the visit list for a while, and this year we made it there. It’s a motor club that displays members cars on a rotating basis - some of my favourites:

IMG_6996.jpeg.7f0aa06e9afaf36ef2bb71b6bcc1f6fb.jpeg

IMG_6997.jpeg.b415be1bf1d7a1275648958c10932f5e.jpeg

an EMW - which is a interesting tale.

IMG_7002.jpeg.17908fcc9c5a7e3578e6790a16027560.jpegIMG_6999.jpeg.21e7427758c222745eccdd0a9dfb00d8.jpegIMG_7001.jpeg.1f56bfb75d626951df97099e80ed7eb3.jpegIMG_7011.jpeg.0e632967200d5d4093a80aead44a556f.jpegIMG_7020.jpeg.ef5bc3376e50c3b1ff983f983fbb4fa6.jpeg

also some great oddities like the motorised penny farthing, the bike with a saw blade for a rear wheel to grip and the weird motor in a hoop again I’d seen somewhere before

IMG_7019.jpeg.95e4071642d58cfab9ab5c5ed4b2bf51.jpegIMG_7017.jpeg.8ffc29976aafcccf2b3226ce2d79f734.jpegIMG_7027.jpeg.e5faac25fdc6e8a352eb8c7fd5dddd97.jpeg

they also have loads of test instrumentation and teaching devices

IMG_7003.jpeg.68b3983d4396fd1bf3116cb0d0225948.jpegIMG_7021.jpeg.6039b9c81c033541b1751c2ea1518892.jpeg

Spent a happy few hours pottering around - we were the only visitors in 3 days, the lunch buffet in the cafe was rammed though.

The Sunday car scene is still strong in Finland, it’s awesome there’s just all sorts out and about at the weekends:

IMG_7041.jpeg.e9ce0a20c447597f20938755f3084a2e.jpegIMG_7074.jpeg.09bfd3dec4a542dfddd35c25a57bc3d7.jpegIMG_7076.jpeg.c0cf0061004b5c30d73bc73a226be09c.jpeg

from Oulu we then pottered down through Finnish lake land which was pretty spectacular, and at times far to close (200m) to the Russian border!

very old wooden town had many V8s crying around

IMG_7115.jpeg.d997d6537cae0110917543c238ca5459.jpeg

And we saw the largest wooden church in Europe (possibly world) - when built it held more than the total local population, they were aiming big:

IMG_7106.jpeg.a7af659835281aba5d76e46bd0f6e1be.jpeg

Also the Finns love a hydro scheme . There was some world famous rapids, visited by royalty, but why let that get in the way of energy self sufficiency.

IMG_7109.jpeg.57abd06d1afa57853454c631fd10ebf1.jpeg

They let the water out for 15 minutes a day whilst they play Finlandia over the tannoy.

Next to Helsinki, current set up of small tent, van and roof tent was starting to show the strain. Ventura brand roof tent was leaking, had terrible condensation issues and was an arse to pack away - everyone was tired of camping  and not being able to stand up straight….

IMG_7120.jpeg.15cb66c4511500583bcfc0f51b989cbb.jpeg

So we had a night here in Parnau in Estonia in a very old house which was awesome, as was the town and beach.

also this which must be rare -  on Estonian plates and left hand drive

plus possibly my favourite vehicle of the trip - was like new inside and out but the pictures don’t really do the pink alloys justiceIMG_7129.jpeg.8f19d28589eccc75af5daa770d590cae.jpeg

From there it was down to Latvia to Sigulda via Riga in rush hour, which knocked a few years off my life expectancy.  Lativia featured many many old vehicles, but didn’t get many photos due to phone issues.

Ferry back from Latvia to Germany was an old Irish Sea ferry and was bedecked with pictures of Ireland. It was also absolutely knackered and quite a nasty crossing. Tight for the lorry drivers reversing trailers into the lower deck as well!

From there it was a mad sprint back to the Hollland and the ferry home

Van did well, 2000 miles, 22mpg and very little oil now I’ve finally fixed the oil leak from the old fuel pump boss. Did realise though it’s a bit small and not really suitable, so think this is probably its last long trip, going to be retired to a general days out van I think.

So driving back from holiday gave me time to think and I’ve had a bit of a mid life crisis.

This has resulted in the decision to purchase a new vehicle which is not really autoshite - it is 18 years old, left the factory as a white two seater and has the second largest engine I have ever owned (which is not that large!) and is part Italian part French, which is a departure from the normal VW shite I have lumbered myself with. It is however quantifiably broken even though it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a vehicle.

I pick it up tomorrow, where it may make a very brief appearance before probably never being mentioned again!

I think an 18 yo qualifies, especially if interesting.

So new key turned up, but it’s nothing like the old one and doesn’t open the door. 79216394-387A-46E2-A365-88A0B073FDB2.thumb.jpeg.6381b205bdf08d73efb6767588c76326.jpeg

contacted the lock smith chap and sent him this pic of me holding the lock the right way up, along with one of the lock number 6918. I was worried that the 1 could be a 7, but online photos showed the 7 definitely was sloping, but this was more upright.

but he pointed out that I made a more basic error and the number is actually 8469:

Felt like a right tit, but fair play the chap has offered to cut another for me for free, presumably as some sort of care in the community scheme for the hard of sight or simple of mind…..

TBF the old key is so worn there’s virtually nothing left. A new key cut correctly (as new from a code) might struggle to fit. You might need the worn key copied instead.

It's 18 years old so qualify. Hope you'll post a bit with this one too

And your trip to Finland looked great, thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed reading and seeing the pictures.

It is 18 years old and technically qualifies - however as you’ll see it’s probably not really in the spirit of things. It’s also the opposite of interesting!

I’m off - no breakfast, and now waiting for a train for a short trip along the North Wales coast.

Train is currently absent but not cancelled so fingers crossed.

PC -1. Station toilets shut so hopefully will remain at 1, although feeling quite stressed!!

If it’s the 0942 to Manchester Airport it’s somewhere around Llandudno Junction on the inbound working, running 40L. Had some sort of problem around the Chester area by the looks of things.
