Tadhg Tiogar
9 minutes ago, HMC said: Mr Vsevolod Serafimovich Murakhovsky (the Soviet Union's Minister of Agriculture) and other delegates visit the Sainsbury's store at Clay Lane, Burpham, Guildford on 5 July 1986 “BOGOFF?!” This was not long after Gorbachev had instigated his glasnost and perestroika plans for the Soviet Union. He seemed particularly keen to learn from Britain and see if aspects of British consumer society could be successfully adapted for the USSR, the oul command economy not having worked all that well. BTW, is Bogov/Bogoff a genuine Russian name? ? Asimo

bunglebus
Anyone else finding lots of links with no thumbnail, and a "sorry image cannot be displayed for copyright reasons"? Very annoying. Spottedlaurel
White Sunny E621 ELX is a 1.6 LX just like mine, it made it to 2001. Attractive metallic blue 140J which I think is DBM 592T only got to 1986, seems an unusually short life given that its looks quite decent in the photo. No longer - they abandoned a lot of their small stores until they...opened them again. Shows changing culture, economics and shopping habits in play over 60 years. HMC
Where it all began; Sainsbury’s very first shop; Drury lane, Holborn, London, shortly before closure 1959; 90 years after it first opened on the site. The adjoining theatre also shut and was redeveloped in the 1970s; as another theatre complex. It looks like the background building with the adverts on the corner survived and is in the background on the last shot. lesapandre
