Impressive. I can hear the fan whine from here. That's one rare Maxi as well - 1750 HLS arrived in April 1979 with the twin carb engine at which point the HL went to a single SU. Tinted glass too, as befits the £4676 fee. That one will also have Hydragas rather than Hydrolastic but the pump is the same.

I remember some Sunday Express magazine article in the early '80s where they found what they believed to me the most average man in Britain, and he had a Maxi.

And he was getting laid the average of two or three times a week, with a Maxi?
it's said that with the rear seats folded flat there is the same amount of room for sleeping as a double bed will give :D

PS, anyone got a spare thingy for pumping up the suspension on one of these??

They go for 300 quid on ebay! Otherwise, there's still a number of garages that still do it. MGF's/Metros' etc. I paid 20 quid all round.
Cant Mr B do this?I seem to think he made his..?

They're relatively simple to make if you've got some common sense when it comes to dealing with fluid that's anything up to 600psi. I've made a couple of them, here's the slow one made out of a cheap grease gun, some copper pipe and a couple of truck flexible schrader connectors: ya gotta be quick and straight putting it on and off to prevent fluid loss, unlike the proper connector.

The other's a bit quicker, but easier to get wrong as the non-return valve isn't automatic...

First reports are that it is utterly vile to drive!

Flat Hydro suspension + poorly surfaced roads + cold engine = kangerooing of epic proportions :lol::lol:

Once it's wound up it's a bit more controllable, but given that on the drive from house to garage you only get up to third for about 4 seconds, I didn't get much of that.

Under close scrutiny, there's more filler and old boy type repairs than I'd have hoped really, but still a class bit of kit. Interior is a wonderful execise in 70's brown overload, plus those sofa seats along with the bus steering wheel and comedy driving position make it a thoroughly amusing way to travel.

Any questions?

Great!Looks much better in your pics Pog, once pumped it should be quite a nice car. Is there some plug in the bottom of the passenger side front wing? - looks the only dodgy bit?

OMG THAT IZ GORJUS MY FAV COLOR AS WELL PAEDO BEIGE!!!!seriously though pog old chp - that is one nice Maxi you have there - I love Maxis, getting rare though they reckon only about 500-1000 of them left (according to the Maxi club)make sure you pump up the spheres - my old Maxi had a nasty aftermarket sunroof and dodgey spheres - the sunroof had a sharp edge and every time you hit abump you would brain yourself on the edge of the sunroof - I started wearing a cycling helmet!

You cant pump up the spheres, only the fluid bit of the suspension. The spheres do go 'off' over time though leading to a crummy ride, as the nitrogen leaks out. When that happens you just have to find better ones (though theres no way of testing them off the car) or get involved in repressurising them, which involves welding valves into them and refilling them from a nitrogen cylinder... not a lot of fun.Theres a german guy shows how to do it on ARonline somewhere. I would love to drive one of these old wedges or Maxis with an 'as new' set of displacers, I bet they are unbelievable.

Posted

Yeah, I pumped up the fluid on my ol' miniMetro and the ride was shocking. Not sure there was any nitrogen left in the displacers...Mind you, I've driven a later hydragas 100 on the same roads, and that was crap too.

Yeah, but what was the suspension like?

According to Dr Moulton esq, he belives the tooling was scrapped by dunlop  The german is Alexander @ threelitre on the AR forum, if you wan't to investigate.

Hmm, so in summary, if I wanted a Maxi that rides and handles properly... I can forget it?

Not necessarily! Pump yours up, it will more than likely be perfectly OK, i'm sure it will be quite decent to travel in, it will certainly be 'competitive' with all the other Maxis on the road.
