The plot

It thickens ...

The car was parked up all yesterday - post work pub requiring public transport utilisation.

Got in it this morning (running late, so didn't check the level).

A steady drive up the road at 60-65mph.

Got to within 1 mile of work and

**BUZZER FLASHY RED LEVEL WARNING**

after about 30 secs this went away, and the traction control had a paddy.

I'm thinking

1. The level was low when the car was cold, and reached the trigger level when it was sitting at a particular angle - setting off the alarm.

Or

2. The sensor is failing/affected by the traction control freakery.

I know the car eats water. But how and why have still to be determined.

How I long for the point/carb/air-cooled GSA ..

#hawt lunchtime update.

I dun snuck up and popped the bonnet off to reveal a low level.

This is before the cap was loosened

And after

IMG_20190627_130343.thumb.jpg.4720395993c301f505e8ce355dcb93b7.jpg

You can see deposits of sediment on the bottle, like it's been blowing stuff out.

I took the only option available to me at the moment:

Topping up and cleaning the bottle.

I'll run it home today and see what's what ( will leave work early so I can blag the level parking spot!)

Take it you have let it idle, punctuated with some revs to see if there are bubbles in the tank? Looks like it's pressurising in some way?

It won’t pressurise at idle.

I left it running for 50 minutes and it did nothing.

Temp crept up to 100 as I was climbing out of fintry.

Heater on and fewer fugutty.

Settled back down to 90, then low coolant warning on.

Parked up.

Went to shop.

Came oot.

Still beeping.

Drove hame.

Will investigate once not warm.

I think the HG is awa and it's pressurising the coolant.

I'll try topping it up and bleeding later.

Oil was fine, no mayo at lunchtime.

Regardless it's getting driven to the Airport tomorrow at 3.30am, and parked up whilst we head down south.

I'll make sure there's fluid in the car for when we get back

Last night it seemed to have become a coffee machine, and was making Cortado at an alarming rate..

It was totally empty. Taynes observations re it being higher RPM causing the issue stuck in my mind for 2 reasons:

1. The road home on Thursday was over the hill on the backroad - a no mercy blast utilising whatever the wee tub could give. Plenty time in 2/3/4 at high rpm (3000-4000). It took 25 miles to get the level warning on.

2. When refilling and bleeding, I ran the engine at 2500rpm for a minute with no load. This was the result:

IMG_20190627_210921.thumb.jpg.a030d6d823ab9cb6658687e5a4568ccf.jpg

I made it do it's best Daniella Westbrook impression

IMG_20190627_213234.thumb.jpg.f868603f20edeeeedbe8150da104ccb5.jpg

And topped it up whilst using the bleed screw and squeezing pipes.

Then to bed for 4 hrs sleep.

Up at 3.30am

Drove Aldi to airport at max 2200rpm (60mph).

Despite being the most boring trip of evar, it made it without any

*BEEEP RED COOLANT LEVEL WARNING*

so now it is time for me to consume beer at a similar rate to the a2's coolant consumption.

More to follow once I can be bothered (at least Monday)

Liking the 'if in doubt flat out' approach here.

Be interesting to see how much arsebiscuitry is involved in HG work on these as it seems a good wee craft otherwise.

It was obviously conceived as a sports car.

Lightweight construction, low* centre of gravity, wide* track, and a perfect* 80/20 weight distribution with 3/4 of a proper pigiron lump slung out front..

Truthfully though, it hustles ok - faster than a certain Picasso..

Since refilling and bleeding the last time, it's covered 120miles with no coolant loss. (Yep, I know it's over max but meh)

Seems like the low RPM approach is helping - both with avoiding pressurisation and my appreciation of the Scottish countryside. Driving anywhere takes fuckin ages.

In an attempt to curry favour, I washed, machine polished and protected the paint with the help of my bro, Split_pin and Davehedgehog31 - cheers chaps!

It looks much smarter:)

Some more effective solution re the coolant may be achieved due to a kind donation from shiter Doug - more to be revealed later!

I have covered 200 miles with no other issues after the bleed and refill.

Shifting at 2k rpm and max speed of 60mph appears effective at avoiding pressurisation.

It is, however, exceptionally boring.

Ergo..

IMG_20190704_232841.thumb.jpg.91ddfdb7beb6be864c31930ad7698b5f.jpg

2 options.

Firstly, steel seal - provided by Doug :) thanks chief.

This will likely be the first port of call, as I'm all about the lazy fixes!

Thereafter, if needed, Dome has supplied new headbolts, so I can source a headgasket and do that. This is the 'last resort' situation, bearing in mind it runs out of MOT in Sept.

Well, point of no return reached..

Drained off some coolant to make space for the steel seal

IMG_20190706_123613.thumb.jpg.a26e2ce69a70295b8b9569d139c1ef75.jpg

I took the coolant out via the bleed screw on the top hose next to the radiator.

Then it was time to pour it in

IMG_20190706_124250.thumb.jpg.e22ed8520d48c68eadcee25a0f2a3bb1.jpg

Next up was a 30 Min wait for it to idle before switching it off.

Coolant is high but looks clean.

I'll let it sit a while and then give it a wee bleed before attempting to drive it

Well if it wasn’t fucked before .....

I tried that on my 2.0 hdi and it didn’t work. But when I took it apart to do the job properly as I should have done to begin with it has very effectively blocked nearly all the coolant passageways in the head and block .

It cost thruppence ha'pney and is about as engaging to drive as a washing machine.

This is much less effort than pulling the heid right aff it, and Doug kindly donated the steel seal, so it has cost £2 in coolant (proper posh g12 too!)

After it has sat a while, I bled it up and drove it home.

Heaters are nice and toasty - I kept them open til the car reached normal operating temp 90degrees on the gauge.

Then I switched off the heater and continued to drive along the motorway.

Got home and this is how it was.

IMG_20190706_193404.thumb.jpg.47e9ee5a19393754d1f030488735d2df.jpg

Now I just need to wait until tomorrow and check the coolant level tomorrow when cold.

Current thinking is drive it to work gently on monday- 60/65mph. Then if coolant level looks ok before I come home, I'll give it a rag home over the hill:)

Performed ok today on shopping duty.

Been and filled the tank, 429 miles on 31.09L, for 62.8mpg..

That's similar to what my old TDI ALH Octavia would do on the same commute, running 130bhp on veg.

Oh, and it still had its headgasket when I scrapped it. Progress, eh?
