Rules on removing registrations

Can't find the Ask a Shiter thread (where did it go?) so posting separately.

My brother bought a car which ran out of MOT in October 2013. It has quite a nice plate which he'd like to remove and, ideally sell.

The car is rotten, so won't see an MOT again.

What are the current rules on removal?

TIA

I could be wrong but I think they have relaxed the rules.

Yes they have but the car has to have been constantly taxed or sorned for quite a time.

Is it 5 years or something?

I expect the taxed or sorned continuously for the last 5 years will be to stop people pulling old cars out of hedges to plate rape them.

I think they're meaning the last five years can be a mix of tax and sorn, but if it's all sorn then that's a no go and you've got to tax it now (and so MOT it as well?)

I think this bit is for the genuine hedge finds - 'be able to move under it's own power'.

Perhaps if you dragged it out of the hedge and placed it at the top of a hill the rusty old heaps potential energy combined with the forces of gravity would ensure it moved under it's own power to the bottom of the hill. Try explaining that to the mandarins at Swansea.

Relayed all this to my brother. He's printed off form V317 and is leaving it in the hands of the Welsh.

Fingers crossed.

If it shows up on the continued tax/sorn computer he'll get it done straight away.

Why doesnt he just do it online it's instant.

He's tried that, thanks to the great advice on here. The system told him that he can't retain it using the online service.

He bought it 3 weeks ago and it looks like it's been untaxed for that short period. He's SORNed it since.

Ah right I get it now. Good luck then
