At the end of the road where I lived when I woz a kid, the butchers' shop had a Fiesta van like that as a runabout, does my memory fail me or could you get a diesel one of these?

Spent a lot of time in a 1.9 diesel one of those fiesta vans in the late 80's. It tramped along in a low revving, torquey kind of way.

I think you could, a 1.6 n/a diesel.

Ignoring the inevitable 'doctor bashing' that will probably ensue, that really is a lovely bit of kit. I can remember the 2.3Gl models (as I had one that was a bit shit) but a 2.8GL must be really rare, it's even got wheel trims.

Bloody lovely car that and no mistaking.

I had a 2.8 GL estate a few years back.  Not nearly as tidy as that one mind, but then I did only pay £350 for it.

Makes sense as you could get the 1.6D in a Mk4 Escort at the same time, my father had one for a while, very noisy and agricultural.  There was a 1.8 diesel mk4 Escort as well, not sure if that had a turbo or not, that would probably have shifted in a mk2 Fiesta van!

Take me down to Rover city

Where the grass is green

And the cars are shitty

Take me home

Just a' urchin
livin' under the street
I'm a hard case
that's tough to beat
I'm your charity case
So buy me somethin' to eat
I'll pay you at another time
Take it to the end of the line

Alas, this one is even worse than you might think.  Someone's pinched the motor and put a lawnmower engine in its place.  On the plus side, the chap's feedback from selling cars is impeccable.

No turbo. Had to wait for the Mk5 for that. The 1.6 was so feeble it could barely pull top gear.

They look OK on the outside those things. Its just when you glance at the interior and the under bonnet that you start to think 'Jesus'

EDIT I'm talking about the shittyrover

I think the engine in the city rover is like the contents of a greggs sausage roll. "Unknown origins"

Then the seller added "I am a massive twat":

Please note that this car is a 1986 vehicle. Mileage from the milometer does not necessarily reflect the 'true' miles as the engine was replaced. Winners, or prospective buyers in the area are advised to inspect the car carefully and they will be given an opportunity to try it out. Buyer will sign a document in which it is stated that the car is taken as seen and seller accepts no responsibility for any faults defects found once the car has been paid for and taken away. Buyer will need to pay a non refundable deposit of £200 on ebay once confirmed he has won the auction. Car will be available to be taken away around the 6th December, viewing available upon appointment. So, moral of the story is that cowboy scammers can save themselves from bidding! This is a car for enthusiasts

It was no sports car, I can remember that, it was normally left at home on long family trips in preference to a Rover 111i which was almost as slow and very cramped but less abrasively loud.  The 1.6 was tremendously smoky on a cold start too.

My mates dad had Mk2 1.6 pop diesel Fiesta from new until about '98. Just before it went my mate had it for the day and we went on a road trip of the midlands - put in about £6 (2 gal?) did over 120 miles and gauge was still higher than the start. Mainly trundling along a roads at 50mph, but still impressive.
