Alright, it's not shite by any means but these are stunning cars and are getting interestingly cheap - this one looks pretty alright for £2k.  It's the right colour and interior combo too.

My main aim for the next five years is to buy something like this, hoover it out, pump up the tyres and drive it round with two fingers permanently up to VOSA.

Fuck MOTs.

Does it start?

Does it stop?

Does it steer?

Does it idle(ish)?

They can suck it.

In the meantime, 309 duly watched. If a derv Passat/Vento like that pops up I'm gonna snaffle it good.

I couldn't possibly agree more.

I yearn for the day I can buy some tatty pre-60 shite and finally be able to tell the fascist PC Gestapo mind control tyrants where exactly they can shove it and how far up.

In the meantime, I shit on the climate change fossile fuel hoax V8 style and put every FIAT Pound Sterling this costs me where my mouth is.

Abso-fucking-lutely. Like your style.

That's not too far from me, but, fukstix, no driving for me for a few weeks until knees are healed. Love to see it in the flesh, and I'd wouldn't touch the cosmetics if it were mine.

WANT.

What a fabulous car.  Even the leather should clean up nicely with a bit of cleaning & feeding.  This is the Mark II with the baulk-ring column change.

No photo of the dash, so presumably that's a horror story, and there's a Lucas 1142 missing, the wipers and trafficators look &*%#ed and the boot catch doesn't work.

One awkward thing is that there are at least two bob-weights missing from the Wilmot-Breeden harmonic stabilizers, which will take some finding.  And believe me, they WILL matter - wikipedia tells me this car has a transverse front leaf spring!

This car must be saved, but the seller "May not post to Australia".

I have no clue what this means, but I love it.  Next time I break down I am DEFINITELY going to tell the Green Flag call centre that this is what's wrong.

Sorry, I'll explain. Some luxury cars of the 1934-48-ish era had chassis' which were designed to flex. There were very good reasons for this, which I won't bore you with, but chassis flex had an unfortunate side effect on the open road - at the right speed the car would get up a horrible vibration. Wilmot-Breeden came up with the "Harmonic Stabiliser", a rubber-mounted bumper bar with heavy bob-weights in the ends of the bumpers. These vibrated out of phase with the chassis vibrations, cancelling them out somewhat.

After 1948, with postwar high-speed road development, car design changed to the stiff backbone concept we still have today, so the Harmonic Stabiliser passed into obscurity.

The auction photos show it well - you can clearly see the rubber mounting bushes and the missing weights from the offside.

Incidentally, all the missing bits are off that side of the car...

Apologies for the length of this post!
