If You Could Have Any Car Under a Grand?

As per title, if you could have any car that costs no more than £1,000 what would you have? I think for me I've spent the last 14 years wanting a Senator 24v...big time and I can't belive that I've never had one, one day I will own one.

Christ that would be on the short list along with a Tahiti blue or Red Vitesse fastback either 2.0 turbo or 2.7 V6 oh and a mk1 late 827 Sterling-fuck I love big old cheap barges. I got a brochure on the 800 range when they were current, sad as it sounds but once in a blue moon I look at it and the 800s in it still look really nice especially on the 17" alloys and they did some really nice colours too.

Renault 16, no contest.

This is a tricky one, it changes quite often!

At the moment it's a Ginetta G26, £1000 ought to buy the best one in the world. Here's not the best one in the world

So much to choose from, but if there are no other criteria than <1000, I'd go for some obscure imported Kei car...

Preferably in 535i flavour this time (not the M535, just the "sleeper" version), or an early 520i (the smallest six is the sweetest one) with the metal dog-dish hubcaps.

Or an Opel Monza GS/E.

A Renault 25 Monaco, or Peugeot 406 V6 saloon with leather and all the toys.P.S. I would have said Mercedes W126 but can't imagine you get much for a grand these days - all rust, naff chrome arches and worn out suspension. However if a nice one came up it would be my first choice.

I dunno, probably something Vauxhall like an Astra GTE, a Cavalier GSI2000 or a Carlton GSI3000.

R25 V6 Turbo would probably do it for me or maybe a nice Citroen CX or XM :D

Forgetting about the practicalities of parts, running costs etc, I think a Honda Legend coupe, one of the 3.2 jobs. Not much RWD Japanese stuff available in this budget, perhaps a 300C or even a 300ZX (Z31) if I feel like undoing a few shirt buttons and donning some mirror shades. But in the real world, a grand at the most is what I’m hoping to spend on a tidy wedge-style Camry 2.2, ideally a Sport manual.

This thread has really cheered me up, we're so spoilt for choice. Add Saab 900 turbo, original or GM flavour, pub landlord XJ 40, Series 3 Landy, Frog-face Scorpio (would a grand stretch to a cosworth engined one?), Alfa 155 V6 and Xedos 6 to the mixture and the world's your oyster :D

Ooooh yeah a froggy Scorpio. In Ultima flavour please, they're well under a grand and fully loaded. And an MG Montego. And a Mk2 GTI.And a 540i.And a 16v Passat Estate. An 850 T5. And some flavour of Saab. How many times over can I spend this grand? :)

I had one of these two years ago, apart from the shite amount of interior space and headroom the rest of it was bloody brilliant, it was also quite economical belive it or not and completely silent at 40mph. A brilliant car and nicely trimmed inside, only probs I had in two years of ownership was a seized rear caliper but managed to buy the parts from Honda to rebuild it and then the cast metal driver's door handle snapped off and cost me £150 although it did come painted. Also would love a Lexus LS400 which you can pick up for less than a grand, went to see one at Christmas within budget but the owner was an utter prick but it drove like a brand new car.

I'd be modest and buy a taxi.

My choice also, I've said on here before the Merc 190 is the best car you can get for banger money, still seem to be plenty of really tidy examples about, some driven and lovingly cared for by old giffer owners, a 2.6 manual would be very nice.....

I think it's 'upto' a grand, so you could do like I've done & name a couple of 500 pounders!

The two cars I wish I still had (apart from the £75 Mk1 Escort 2 door obviously) are the Hillman Avenger 1600DL Estate and the Renault Savanna. I could get a decent example of either for £1000 I think.

The manual gearboxes are pretty vague and tractor-like, but I think they're pretty indestructible.

My choice would be a 190D 2.5 manual +

For up-to a Grand eh? Mmm....

I've got a bug to one day own a decent one of these 8)

+1

A late MkI Passat is in my top 5 cars.

In fact that very car would do, is it on eBay??

Last one I saw in the flesh was just like that but X reg passing through Chichester a few years back, I obviously craned my neck when I saw it!

Interesting that they seem to be so much rarer than Golfs & even Sciroccos of the time!

Already got my ideal 'under a grand' motor!

I know what you mean, I think I would struggle to really top my current machine - which I could have bought twice for just over a bag of sand...

Posted Image

I mean, it's quick, handles well, has just enough toys, perfect driving position, will show 40mpg at licence-losing speeds and costs less to insure than a diesel euroblob. What's not to like?

Of course it's quite 'rational', so I'd also be inclined to waste £1000 on something really old, daft and horrid, like a side-valve ford clinging to an MoT by a thread, just for kicks.

Wow that's super tasty, where did you spot that? 8)
