I need to cut and weld next to where my fuel pipes come into the engine bay. Can I get away with putting a wet rag over the ends to stop fumes and then bury them in welding blankets?

I'm considering purchasing an impact wrench, preferably second hand. What amount of torque is considered sufficient for general car use, such as getting rusty bolts off etc? I'm planning on changing both front wishbones and ball joints on the Bora, so I'd rather not struggle. Plus, it'd be handy to keep for other jobs too.

have a look at youtube reviews and make up your own mind...often the numbers on the packet dont mean alot

you have to spend a fair bit to get one that will undo most stuff , cheaper dregs wont undo wheel nuts , ive just splashed out on a milwaukee 1/2" one

gets most stuff off sposed to be 300nm...doubt it would touch crank bolts , they do a more powerfull one that will but its huge so more alkward to use on everyday jobs

All the hoses & rad look dry, when I've had water pumps fail then either I've seen coolant dripping from the pulley or they've rattled, neither the case here. The coolant is still bright pink. I do hope it isn't the pump, not sure how much of a job it is on this engine as it has a timing chain.

Thanks for the response RayMK & Twosmoke300.

I used one of those ebay UV dye kits to find the very slight leak in my Volvo. It worked really well just drop the dye in the coolant wait a couple of days of running then use the supplied uv torch at night. Any leaks even really small ones are obvious as they glow.

740 has a dual electric towbar. Fancy!

How do towbar electrics work though, if I plug the car into a camping hookup does it charge?

I thought you were joking.

But in this day and age, perhaps* it's logical.

Someone bought me one of these, thought it would be crap, but it isn't.

How do you loosen a constant tension clamp like this if you are a wuss like me?post-20084-0-43280500-1503145600_thumb.jpg

Posted

Pair of pliers, squeeze the tangs on the clamp together and slide it along the hose out of the way.

Then replace it with a jubilee clip, 100% better!

You can get proper tools to do it but the cheap ones I've only ever bought have been crap. I find mole grips to be just as effective to open and hold them open.

Car manufacturers like using them as they're very quick to put on in a factory.

Done chaps. Yeah molegrips did it, just didn't wanna bust the pipe.post-20084-0-66386500-1503146905_thumb.jpg

Thing is the pipe gets marked so much by the clamp, as the edge of the pic above, that I'm wondering if it will seal properly with a jubilee.

the springy clamps are better than a jubilee...self adjusting with temperature etc , leave em on it

Yup - jubilee clips are more of a pain than the spring ones . As long as you have the right tool - about 8 quid

There's nowt wrong with Jubilee clips, my boat is full of them and as anyone who has ever worked on a boat knows, they are all built by left-handed dwarfs. It is also very important that hoses don't fall off otherwise the boat sinks. All you need is genuine stainless steel Jubilee clips and one of these:

I don't mind Jubilee clips, provided they work ok. They are however a monumental twat when they seize or fuck up. Very recently I badly sliced my palm open on one with a screwdriver!

Those spring clips are good, if you've got a decent tool. But imho they don't look right on old cars so I rarely use them.

Just use a hex socket on the junkie clips zero chance of attempting to add a new piercing to yourself or the hose

Liked for the typo as much as the advice.

Good advice, but too late!

Those ones are crap. They are made of crap metal and the clip slides into the mechanism jamming it. Then your tool is stuck in a clamp that was probably in a really awkward place already! Don't ask how I know...

Anyone tried after market LED headlights?

I'm considering one for my bike as the light is crap. I was running a HID for a bit but they don't quite fit in the bowl & crack the wires within months.

I fitted some to my S80 they were excellent, great beam cutoff, passed mot fine as well. More even light output than a standard halogen bulb.

What are the rules on producing pattern parts.  Do OEM suppliers have a patent for a fixed number of years after which anyone can produce them?

Posted

Grease nipples (oo-er matron) and grease guns. Old gearbox so possibly 1/8bsp nipple and new grease gun. Nipple is jammed in grease gun, sheered off from casting. :(

I have extracted the remains of the nipple from the casting but the rest aint coming out of the gun... not ever it seems.

So, my question is: are modern grease guns only suitable for metric nipples, 6mm being slightly smaller than 1/4 and does this often happen?

I think patents last twenty or twenty five years after which it is every man for himself. Before that you can buy a licence (or license if you are American) to manufacture. Which is why all the others were so late to the party with Citroen suspension but now seem to be using it whilst Citroen aren't because they are idiots.

Why cant the DVLA pay car tax refunds directly into a bank account rather than sending a cheque which I then have to bother going down to the bank to pay it in.

Because sending a cheque means they keep the money longer.

I have written them a proper letter because the thieving twats only sent me a cheque for one months rental instead of the two they should have.

I have no idea if my refund is correct or not as the cheque doesn't come with a breakdown or explanation of how it's worked out. It was so much better back in the good old days when tax came with the car.
