What I do agree with is that £80 doesn’t buy AND RUN an old shitter.

This x1000.

Also the delicious irony of the OP's photograph being the much overused meme of jeremyclarksonscrapit.jpeg

I'm going to have to reply to this.  This thread puts me In a real quandary, in fact it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.

I know I should be human and charitable and that if you wanted to purchase my AX then that's fine obviously.  What makes me actually really uncomfortable is the fate of the focus and the clio and apparently other cars before that.

I understand new parking arrangements have been made, but with the past horrible happenings, I don't have much faith in the situation. I really do not want the AX to come to harm, me being one of those stupid people that actually gets attached to cars, I cant in all good faith be anything other than worried.

How would anyone else feel in this situation?

Not sure about that - some people scrap cars that need minor repairs because “that cars a bit old now” etc.

I was offered £1 for a 2004 Fiesta in part ex against my close to zero margin new Duster - the “we don’t want it” price. Scrap at the time was about £75. I gave it to a mate and they’re still using it having spent very little on it. It had about 9 months ticket.

I couldn’t be arsed selling it - imagine that many times over with most people buying a new car. Not everyone is au fait with scrap prices

This is very true that vitara I posted has clutch slip while being over enthusiastic with the throttle, they just wanted a newer car anyway rather than spending on an old one, garage offered shite money so they asked if I wanted it, who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth, I've done a few hundred miles in it now and it only slips if you give it the beans in a high gear at low speeds, I recon it will well and truly outlast the mot though,

Some people can't be arsed selling stuff as regularly pointed out on here and the amount of freebies and sub ton cars I've had lately tells me most people are starting to think the same,

Wish people would offer me their old cars. I'm looking for a cheap Punto for the winter just now.

Pretty much the same as yourself - this is clearly a dreadfully distressing situation for the OP's friend, and something needs to be done, for sure.

As these seem to be malicious, targeted attacks, I'd worry that getting a new car might just give the abject scumbucket(s) behind all this misery a new target, and then we'll be back in the same sorry situation this time next week.

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate that all this is being done for the very best of reasons and if a solution to keep the new car from harm has been found, then brilliant... but I think none of us want Chompy's friend to go through more heartache, a kind donor see their generosity come to naught, and have a shiter's ex-car terminally damaged, if the wee scrotes carrying out this mayhem are still going about their work with impunity.

As a confirmed softie around my cars, I'd also have very mixed feelings about selling one of mine, if I thought it was going to soon meet a sticky end.

If the peelers are disinterested and can't be made to take an interest (though mentioning the Fiona Pilkington case may help, as the police were lambasted at inquest for standing by and doing nothing for years there) then I'm just not sure the solution is as simple as just getting a new car.

If there were a local psycho poisoning pets, the solution wouldn't necessarily just involve getting a new pet...

Genuinely gutted for everyone involved in this situation, and hope a resolution can be found that allows the OP's friend to keep her independence without having to deal with this heartache on a regular basis.

EDIT: Just read through the thread again properly this time...

And as of this moment parking arrangements are in place so the car never needs to be unattended unless in a very public area like a supermarket.

Sounds like there's been a change of parking location? That may well improve the outcome!

I do know that the market has changed over the years.

I simply asked as I did procure a great escort eclipse for £80-£90 region in the past and my friend than the car for 3 years! Always repairs her car if possible and will only scrap if no choice or seriously uneconomical.

In the last 15 years I can count on one hand how many cars my friend has owned. When buying at sub £500 90% of the time that is a healthy record.

I never came asking for charity or handouts I just wondered if still possible.

I can assure you that whatever car replaces the poor Clio will be maintained to the same standard as all the others. Probably last her a few years too

...maybe. I got a K11 Micra with 8 months MOT for £120, a Xantia sinker and a Mondeo TDCi for free (albeit without MOT), a 405 Turbo Diesel for £180 (wish I'd kept that..) - obviously they weren't perfect and the K11 gearbox blew itself to pieces 6 months later but cheap motoring nonetheless.

I might have a 106 with a dented door and an oil leak for scrap money plus a drink soon if that tickles your pickle. MOT until...december sometime I think.

At the moment chasing the AX but there will be action plans B through to around D to deploy if needed lol

Something older, epic, cheapish and French will most likely be the best option anyway as they really are mega cheap to maintain and simples to fix

My wife has been the recipient of 2 free cars (from family) - one lasted 13 MOT's.  She has also given away a classic mini to a friend, who failed in the "we want first refusal when you've finished with it. She scrapped it (because brakes and only because brakes) and a BINI (although that to our daughter) and my son was given his car, but not until i insisted it be offered to people in the family who were more deserving (they were not deserving but stupid enough to decline a 19K mile car)

I once got given by a random stranger off the internet a mk2 cav cdi auto.

Have you EVER given a car away ? If not you haven't built up the Karma yet

I am really wrestling with my paranoia on this one.

I have sent you a new PM chompy_snake. I also want to be totally transparent and say publicly here, I do not really want to sell it into this situation for a few reasons.

a) when we bought the car it had been owned by the proverbial little old couple and it was the old ladies car, her husband had a BX TZD they had bought together, we bought both cars, the BX went to a mate of mine and has been fully rebuilt virtually. The AX 'MIGHT'  face a nasty end in this situation. I do not want to chance that. Its that simple in my mind.

I have suggested that the thread on here about cars for 300 quid or less might be a good place to find something as 280 is virtually 300 quid anyway.

I feel that bad that I may even pull the Roffle and just keep it.

This might make people here think i'm a total arse, but hopefully not.

In some cases cars mean more to me than say, a family pet.  I cannot with all good conscience risk this car meeting its end at hands of vandals.

I know that other parking has been arranged, but in the original thread it stated the cars that were vandalised to the point of write off, had all been parked in different locations. Catch 22.

And yes, I have given away MOT'd cars in the past. But this isn't that situation.

Graham you know my thoughts on this as we discussed on the phone. Them cunts need to be sorted which hopefully will be soon. I do see stinkwheels side too. Would be a sorry end if anything happened. As you know we offered the wife's car to borrow but you said the same as said on here. Damage is a possibility. My view is cheapest banger available then when all's done park it on them.

Its your car, and yours to do whatever you please with it.

That's very true. I really wish I didn't feel the soppy way I do about vehicles sometimes.

Slightly confused, but no surprise there...

Yes, it is 'possible' to get a car still with MOT for £80 but rare. Also it would be a money pit and FTP regularly probably. So why bother?

Have I missed the point?

This is it, totally correct cheapest banger possible. I am afraid I do not see the AX as that.

I also agree that these scumbags need sorting out.

I must say stinkwheel,as much as I agree with you you can't honestly know what will happen to it with any new owner. It's a good un so I'd keep it if unsure.

Also agree, we cannot know what will happen. That's why I feel bad for not selling it and helping out, but also feel I cannot risk the premature end.

Well I shall abandon the AX as an option (may I suggest that you also remove from raffle or general sale if you feel that way with the car) .

It is your car to do as you please with and I respect that.

This.

While you could get lucky and get a car for little monies which will pass it's next MOT I'd say it is unlikely. I sold my Civic for £400 and that had a warped disc, no handbrake, a scrapyard battery which wouldn't hold charge for more than a couple of days, end of life tyres and a multitude of other minor faults along with 10 days of MOT left.

It doesn't exactly sound like your friend is in any position to be constantly DIYing a super budget car to keep it going... Also if the original budget was £80 for a functioning car surely the next time it needs a service item or a tyre you're going to be out of funds?

I'd not bother buying another car until the cause of the damage is stopped. It only takes a second to slash a tyre or smash off a mirror, even in a public place I imagine very few people would notice and given you already know who is doing it they obviously have nothing to loose from their identity getting out anyway. If they are this hell bent on causing hassle for this person they'll manage it or simply divert the attacks to something else.

I wouldn't replace the car until the root cause is identified and dealt with.

If you are planning some homebrew revenge type tactics I would be prepared for reprisals. These people have clearly little or nothing to lose whereas I suspect you and your friend do.

There are usually two sides to every story, if there is some reason they are targeting her then that needs resolved. Assuming it's only her car being done over and others being left alone you need to find out why. Has she confronted these idiots over something else in the past, said something to them to provoke a reaction?

I'm not saying they are justified at all but there might be some reason they see her as fair game.

There is reasons but nothing to do with the lady in question. Sadly the only way they feel they can get revenge on someone else is via her car as the other person has no vehicle and they know she relies heavily on it. The other guy didn't do anything wrong either,it's just these two cunts looking for a scapegoat. They have pushed certain folk too far now though. The lady isn't the only one getting grief but she is the only one they know who drives whatever car she has because they see her frequently.

The AX are great little cars and have moved beyond bangerdon IMHO. Can you get a car for £80. Yes but you'd need to look a long time. Go up to 200 and there is lots on Ebay.

They’re so slow it’s likely to get vandalised whilst she’s driving it.

AS jokes aside, I’m hoping for a happy outcome here. Good luck all.

136bhp unless it's been remapped.

That would've been it then.

It's more than needed so will likely have to be decarboned in 6 months lol
