Hyundai Pony - how miserable are they?

Recommended Posts

Having sold the Mercedes and my only car being a 41 year old barn find Maxi still sitting at the back of my friendly local garage, I need a car pretty quickly.

This has come up locally on gumtree

https://www.gumtree.com/p/hyundai/hyundai-pony/1313889861

It is cheap with low mileage but I was looking to get something like a Peugeot 307 with PAS, CL and EW at least. Something with five gears would also be nice it looks like this has four.

It looks appealing in the its bright paint and I think quite a good looking car, although the interior is very grey and lots of flimsy looking plastic.

Does anyone have any experience of these, are they very miserable and is the engine OHC with a cambelt?

Thanks.

They were fucking miserable when they were brand new, I bet a few on here will love them though because Autoshite.

Mr Bollox had a X2 version & I believe gave up on it due to a carb problem & parts being made of unobtainium.

My mum had one when I was about 22 & I remember it feeling really cheap & nasty. Added to that the brakes were so over servoed it locked up if you looked at the pedal, I couldn't drive it because of that.

Okay thanks, that doesn't sound too good. This is still carb fed I think, according to my 1994 What Car price list anyway.

So when are you getting it?

BTW I think I recall 5 gears.

Lol, well this is Autoshite! I may give them a ring tomorrow and go and have a look. Looking at the interior photo it looks like it has four gears which surprises me for that period, it wouldn't be that big a deal for a short term runaround.

It will almost certainly be more reliable than the Laguna phase 2 auto which I have just seen which are my favourite "modernish" cars!

I had a goona two, a block of brie was more use as a car.

I loved my first X2, was almost unkillable.

I bought one years later and some random electrical fault killed it the day I got it and it never started again. So mixed reviews from me...

Grim.

Shite build quality.

I rolled a similar one. They don't handle very well

That's a dealer special model too, called the Spritza. I only know this as there is, or was, an abandoned one not far from me. I don't have much else to add.

You were considering buying a Pugrot 307, but now a 90's Pony has caught your attention? That's comparable to choosing between either eating your own poo with a plastic knife and fork, or eating a co-op finest branded chocolate mousse with a gold-plated spoon.

Get the Hyundai bought.

Spritza (and Chintz) were based on the 1.3 Sonnet so four speed. The 1.3 LS was five speed.

Ah, but which one is the finest branded mousse! I have never been logical with cars. I think the colour caught my attention and for that price it is worth having a look.

Okay thanks for that. There can't have been too many four speed cars still around in 1994, the mini of course I suppose. Even my base model L reg Fiesta had five gears.

My uncle once rented a Hyundai Pony to take us to Weston super Mare on holiday after my parents Reliant Robin broke down...

So good nostalgia! It’s a yes from me...

Its cheap enough - buy it, use it and if you don't like it move it on here. There must be about 2 on the road in the UK...its really an interesting car given its so early.

Hey if you buy it and want rid in the new year I'm sure I could net you a small profit for your troubles of holding it until then :)

1 lady owner from new

60k

250 squids?

No Power steering, no electric Windows, no shit to go wrong

Why not?

If you can think of 1 good reason not to invest in it, then you are banned from AS forever.

I reckon the shite handling will be down to shite tyres.

The clutch is nowt, the gearboxes in these weigh about 175g and there's stacks of room to get it out.

That one I had, had carb problems - the emulsion tubes were made of monkey metal and had started turning to powder!

However, the brief drive I had in it was quite good - it felt mega lively, as if it really weighed nothing at all.

I say give it a whirl. They look rubbish and are flimsy as hell but are actually a pretty fun thing to blezz around in.

My dad had an x2. 5 door special edition thing. Horrid cheap plastics inside. Hollow panels, wallowing along every road... my dad loved it. Absolutely loved it. No maintenance. Zero... It slipped a belt once and went off a cylinder... until it was reset! Drove perfectly after that! Did I mention my dad loved it?! Identical to this one. One for sale looks nice

At £250 with 12 months MOT it's worth a punt, you'd probably get that back no bother off some masochist on here if it's not for you.

I have recently owned a Talbot Horizon 1.1 with 4 speed box, I can't be more masochistic than that surely! I shall ring the seller later. Thanks for the input all.

1.Remove vacuum hose from servo and plug hose with suitably sized random object to avoid fucking up the mixture.

2.Win teh internetz by driving a shite car with retro non-servo brakes.
