Cracking buy, always had a soft spot for these. A family friend has an XJR-S tucked away, needs quite a lot of work (naturally) but its probably appreciated a fair bit in the time its been off the road

Most excellent snaffling skills sir....... that is a truelly epic motor in anyones eyes. Small children will wave, ladies will swoon and the dogs will lord it over the 'common' hounds they meet whilst out and about. 

I've only been a passenger in one - I promptly offered on a cabriolet that was languishing at a nearby garage but was rebuffed...... it was also rotten at the rear supports (buttresses?) and fragged not long after. I thanked the garage owner for saving me from myself!

 

I really would love to own one if ever possible - but will read up on this one and beat myself senseless every time I have one on 'the list'

Those front tyres man...  Fine for pootling to the shops and shows, but Corsas are a terrible tyre with only marginally more grip than teflon.  Had to fit some to the front of the 414 in an emergency and even then I wouldn't recommend using them.  Just be careful on them, especially in the wet, and swap them out for something a little better when you can.

 

That said, the rest of the car does look rather nice and the V12 is a lovely looking and sounding thing, very much the right engine for the car.

After quite a bit of faffing about to get the poor chap paid for his car, I should be picking the great black whale up at 1:00 tomorrow. I am 'quite' looking forward to it! Also, bloody nervous, I really didn't check it over that well at all, just realised I didn't even lift the carpets!

My Uncle taught me to drive in his V12 XJS, that was bloody mental!

 

In regards to the break fluid level warning light, check the connections in the level sensor cap, they tend to come loose when the cap is removed/replaced.

Have you opened the bonnet yet? Did it give you The Fear? Actually they aren’t really that complicated, there’s just 12 of everything.

 

Hopefully the brake fluid light is just a dodgy contact but keep an eye on it in case the inboard rear brakes are sticking - a common problem, especially if it’s been standing a while. You’ll smell it if they are. Ask me how I know.

Yes underbonnet is a fearful experience indeed. Pretty sure the levels are correct, just the sensor playing silly buggers. Hopefully, if the money as gone thru, then I will be collecting later today

Break the internet and put a diesel in it, then attend a Jaguar owners club meeting.

Have seen a few in the pre internet years, all Perkins powered as they were freely available at the time, they had all been converted to manuals though.

Also a quite a few small block Chev conversions in Aus.

I was at a workshop talking to a guy restoring an e type V12, I asked him what it was like to work on , he said it had air con and power steering and he was about to start changing the plugs then he got a faraway look and I swear I saw tears forming

Well, collection is set for 1:00 today. Car is insured (£118 through One Call who the Mazda was insured with, they were good then) and the money is the seller's bank. The seller is going to drive it back here and there are loads of bits and history, a cover and books that come with it. I am, strangely, shit scared! It's going to have to live outside for a week or two as the garage is full of other peoples shit, which is not ideal, but hey, gives me a chance to drive it and do a bit of fettlin' play with it, polish it, ponder life and meaning of a bank statement printed all in red.

It's home.... without a single break for fuel   I am just going to go and wash it, the cover the last guy has had on since it was evicted from the garage has got the car filthy and worse, caused blisters on the bonnet! Argh!

 

I have just checked all the things I didn't check the other day and all is good - boot floor, rear floors, front floors. Oil is new and clean and up to the level, brake fluid is fine (though the light still flashes!). There is a 'tinkling' sound from somewhere under the middle of the car, no idea what that is and the starter makes a horrible noise when it starts but seems to work okay? Even the electric aerial works and so does the radio/cassette! No C.D. whatever will I do.

 

There are a few bubbles of rust but nothing major and the engine seems fine which is the big thing, underneath looks peachy not Papal!

Is the starter staying engaged after it starts & screaming for a second or two?

 

My XJ40 did that and the fix* was to ignore it for a year so the more regular use freed it up.

Just washed her, it does look a treat in black. Needs a good cut and polish as it has been stood for months again. I 'think' I'm a happy camper but until it's been used for a bit, I'll never settle down!
