Some cars don't give you the reversing beeps if there's a fault present, on mine the system still clicks the sensors but inside the car you just get one Bad Beep to inform you there is a fault.

The volvo disables the system if the sensors are faulty. I'll try the click test.

Had two deliveries today. My DICE clone which should allow me to read fault codes, and these Volvo rubber floor mats which will stop me stressing out about muddy feet mucking up the carpet.

Well it's not the best fix in the world but it'll do for now 87deba8c5f27cb97b8dba250f11cf52d.jpg

Wow, these are some real autoshite-worthy repairs so far. How much did you pay for the car, if I may ask?

A little shy of six large. Not shite money and a lot for an 11 year old car, but they're a rare beast, these.

I didn't know about them until a taxi ride a few years ago. The owner/driver loved it and gave a full demo of performance available, weird for a Volvo - no substitute for many cylinders.

Hope it continues to tickle the right spot.

Aux belt went yesterday, looks like it took the water pump with it too. Lost power steering, charging and cooling while on the drive home. Had to drive a short distance to find a safe place to stop. Hope I haven't damaged the engine even further. Tame mechanic rescued me and is going to come and have a look as soon as his schedule allows.

On the upside I had it valeted that morning so we weren't pushing against a nasty blanket of bird shit

Ooh I hope that is just the belt & pump, lovely car and looking spot on after the valet!

what a pain, while not ideal, thermosyphon will have kept the coolant moving even with the loss of the water pump so unlikely to have cooked itself too much. I bet the steering was nice and light* without PAS! If its dropping coolant then the pump could well be knackered - probably worth getting that replaced while the mechanic is in there replacing the belt & tensioners.

Tame mechanic is fixing it today. The bearings in one of the idler pulleys (or the idler pulley? Not sure if it has more than one or indeed if any car has more than one. In fact I'm going to investigate now. It does in fact have more than one.) failed. This was ... less than ideal. The bearing failure munched the mounting thingo it sits on. This is part of the timing case which a single cast piece of aluminium. So the timing case and a whole bunch of other stuff needs replacing. Thankfully he's able to do it without pulling the engine out. He's managed to get most of it done but he's waiting on one part from Sweden which won't arrive until Friday.

Well, it cost a fair bit, and working it's still worth a fair bit. Not working it's probably worth about £200.

Also if you ever get the chance to drive it you'll understand :)

Good grief, thats a bill and a half. Top marks for having it done. Is it much more effort to have the cambelt done at the same time? Or should I not ask?

Posted

You got not a bad run out it before the big bill:)

I got the GSA at the same time as this (withing a week or 2 I think) and used it as my runner to view this.

The GSA has had 4 spark plugs/ 4 tyres /service and an Acel pump on the carb.

Different worlds - god knows this Volvo is a hoot to drive - glad it's getting fixed:)

Good advice!

I've just changed a grumbly belt tensioner on my car, did the idler pulley at the same time as it seemed sensible but was initially undecided from the "if it ain't broke...." point of view. Reckon it was a good idea after all.

That's done quite the job on that timing cover and pulley.

Glad it lives again!

I think the pulley was ... recalcitrant and needed encouragement.

The timing chain cover damage was all down to the failing pulley though.

If that cover is sold aluminium then there is about £25 of scrap there. Smoll offset for total cost of fixng, but offset nonetheless?

Ooh, I'll get it out of the skip then!

Just an FYI to anyone interested, I'm putting this up for sale. It's running bob on now, but I can't afford the fuel bills any more. I love it very much but I've had my fun. Time to move it on. I'll be looking for £4000. Not shite money, I know.

Oof.

Tempting, but I'm looking for something more boring.

Traded in on Saturday. Gutted, but had to face reality. He'll be going through Shoreham vehicle auctions some time pretty soon (maybe Monday) is anyone wants to try their luck.4e0d47db62a6715ef526294b217d4e3e.jpg
