AXrescuer Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Fuck shitty wank wank fuck arse fuck piss cock shit ooh lummy! Poxy axle stand gave way on me earlier tonight, brake disc caught my leg on the way down and left me with severe bruising and side-by-side 3 inch gashes on my shin! Damn me for being too portly to get out of the way in a more timely manner! Stitches hurt and I can't sleep. Thigh feels like I have a marble in it after what seemed like a mahoosive tetanus booster too!
mk1_4dr Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Were you underneath? Or working in the wheelwell? Either way... Did the axle stand, like, totally give way? what make was it? Or was it 30yrs old with a big bolt instead of the proper pin (like both mine at home )
Father Ted Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I think we need an Autoshite hall of pain. with photos ( though not of the recent bel end trapped in zipper one).Hope it gets better soon.
whitevanman Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I've had similar Stand colapse issues before.not fun, get well soon
nigel bickle Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Phew. I know it must hurt-but it could have been so much worse..Glad you're''ok''
dollywobbler Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Crikey - though sounds like more of a case of "phew" than "drat." Could have been very nasty!
HillmanImp Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Did it just drop to the minimum height or did the structure collapse?I am going to whack another one under my Imp today to be safe now.Scary monkeys.Like everyone says, it could have been worse, glad your are (sort of) okay.
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 At least you weren't too badly hurt. What type of stand was it? I was dicking about with my big end underneath a car supported by cheap axle stands and a couple of wheels, if it had fallen, the chassis would have halved the size of my head. I don't like working under the car.
Anglevan Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 sounds like you were very lucky - my mate died when an axle stand collapsed and the car fell on him. He was removing the gearbox from an Anglia when it collapsed on him. I've been paronoid ever since when working on my cars and always have a failsafe. I throw the wheel i've taken off under the car, if i've used a trolley jack I leave that there as well as the axle stand of course.
Mr Lobster Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 You've been very lucky by the sound of it. As above, I'm very wary of being underneath a car only supported by axle stands and will tend to leave a wheel or trolley jack under as well, just for security.

AXrescuer Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Hi peeps, thanks for the comments. What happened is that the securing pin just let go and down she came. I was sitting with my legs right under the wheel arch whilst trying to remove the brake caliper. In the cold light of day I can see that I was very lucky but it's still a heck of shock to the system. It's funny, the older I get, the harder I seem to find shaking things off. I'm aching so much right now that I can hardly move.
VWPowered Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 nothing a joint and a bottle of cognac wont fix.. i dont use the old style axle stand as for the same reason, got some click ones i think as you get old you lose your balls as when your younger nothing bothers you is the car ok
Twiggy Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 i think as you get old you lose your balls as when your younger nothing bothers you Lucky he didn`t !
Guest Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Fucking hell mate! Lucky escape!I've never been directly injured by one of my cars, but I was utterly KO'd by a propped up exhaust system on the old Ripspeed desk at my local Halfords. It was far too long to be leaned on the wall, and then the inevitable happened when someone slammed a door too close \ too much air pressure \ I was tool close.I heard a creak, then a 'thwack'. Then there was an early curtailment of activities. Apparently an aged lady found me prostrate on the deck, thought I was on 'the drugs' and reported it to management.Next thing I know, a nice lady from the Wythenshawe ambulance service called Ted was shining a light in my eye and asking me if my head caned somewhat.
AXrescuer Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Luckily car is okay, but my body is being a big girly so I'm all shaky and achey! Bloody leg is throbbing like a good 'un.
FredTransit Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Shite that was a lucky escape. I hope you got a big branch and gave it a sound thrashing.....
Richard Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 That's what made the axle stand collapse in the first place!
trigger Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Sounds like you was very lucky, You could of lost your leg! A similar thing happened to me years ago when i was at work, I had put a MR2 onto axle stands and was taking the wheels of so they could be painted when it slipped sideways of the stands and it landed on my legs, Luckily i had room still to get them out and no harm was done but i still poop myself, I always put the wheels under the car now or a lump of wood.
dollywobbler Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 All this talk of "putting wheels underneath" is not fair. Doesn't work with a 2CV...Mind you, I can do most jobs on that without having to jack it up at all which is good as I'm always very nervous when under a car. Had the P6 on ramps and hated that as it was still so tight that I couldn't get a proper lungful of air. Two post lift sounds good!
pogweasel Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 YOWSER!That sounds a bit of a lucky/unlucky escape. I am gonna check all my stands carefully now. That said, I've got two pairs of really hefty ones, and one set of old shonkers that only get used in emergencies anyway... Did once lose a land rover off axle stands, bloody thing went sideways off it, teach me for listening to Mrs_Pogs dad that his crap concrete drive was better for fettling than the tarmac on the street. Amusingly, my usually sloth-like tat accomplice moved at an unprecedented rate as it fell to avoid squashing....

Is this where you earn your pennies Mr Watt, only I'll be next door at some point tomorrow, will you be in?
trigger Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 This reminds me of a story one of the mechanics told many years ago whilst i was doing my school work experience. One of his mates was doing some work in the engine bay of some car that was on a ramp whist his other mate was under it helping him, Matey up top dropped his screwdriver whist this chap was looking up, It got him straight in the eye and blinded him, He said his mate felt so bad about what happened he left and got a new job. Also have heard stories about mechanics getting burned wrists when there metal strapped watches get earth out between the two battery terminals as well.

Very unpleasant.
