Daft tyre names

Apollo are an Indian company, founded in 1972. They have factories in India, Hungary and significantly The Netherlands. Why significantly The Netherlands? because, in 2009 Apollo bought Vreidstein the famous Dutch tyre maker (incidentally the Hungarian factory is also a former Vreidstein unit).

The popularity of Apollo's in Germany is probably directly related to the popularity of Vriedstein tyres in Germany. I suspect that Vriedstein fitters will also be marketing Apollo's as a budget equivalent because 'zehy are all made by zee zame company innit M8'.

Looks like they have some sort of sponsorship deal with Liverpool.

My Apollos were got from the tyre fitter I normally use. They have big vredestien signs and been signs all over the place. I've usually bought vredestien from them or uniroyal online and got them to fit for me.

I believe there's still that Pirelli place in Carlisle, a Michelin factory in Dundee, the aeroplane tyres factory in Birmingham and they must have something at the Avon site in Melksham. Motorbike tyres maybe and those for premium cars?

One of the Apollo tyres I bought 6 weeks ago has developed a big bulge in a side wall. It's only done about 600 miles. The tyre garage has ordered another for me, but said that apollo will say I have hit something to cause it. I know that I have driven every mile in the van since I've owned it and have not hit anything with it. So I am expecting to have to pay full price for the replacement. If I do, I will never buy apollo tyres again, and will also find new tyre fitters after 15 years of using this one.

New tyre fitted today, no charge as a goodwill gesture. They will try a claim to Apollo but think it will likely fail. I dont think I will buy Apollo again.

Kelly-Springfield is actually a very old US company, founded in 1894.  It was acquired by Goodyear in 1935 and operated as a subsidiary until 1999, when it was fully integrated into Goodyear.  Goodyear still uses the name to this day.

According to the webs they are TyresDirect’s house brand (sort of the rubber equivalent of Happy Shopper Pinot Grigio), specialising in 4x4 tyres. 
 

I absolutely love a cheap tyre with a silly name, usually because of some ghastly engrish related foul up. Sooner or later we’ll get a run of ‘Kevin’ or ‘CG Badluck’ budget tyres getting punted out to all the fast fit centres.
