Great spots! The Austin is a 1939 10. Strange it doesn't show up on the DVLA site, but it's on Cartell.

Bit of a update for you guys tonight, This afternoon i went for a drive to Clacton and Jaywick in my Escort, this is the shite car mecca of East Anglia i think and your always likely to spot something of interest.

OMG what kind of place is Clacton and Jaywick!(good name for the street) Is that on council land? my local council would never put up with that and the cars wouldnt be there long before being hiabed by Channel 4 ratings winners!

Posted

All the roads in Jaywick are named after car brands, Something to do with the Londoners moving up there in the 1930's and buying holiday homes, But I kid you not, the whole area is just chock a block with old cars, nearly every other driveway has something of interest parked up it.

Oh and the people that hiab cars like that are the people who live in the area (I'm going to hell for saying that!)

Liking the 164 Ovlov as well, looks great.

I wouldn't fancy driving around the place myself though, it does look a bit like you could film a UK version of deliverance there!!

Trig, do you know where exactly the Jaywick holiday camp used to be?? We went there on hols when I was little and I looked on google earth but wasn't sure if it was still a camp or not. I've got some old photos somewhere.

Couldn't be closer to the truth. Jaywick is a splendid place, just never, repeat never go there under cover of darkness.

My other half and I occasionally stroll the avenues on long summer days, dodging the air-gun pellets and rabid pitbulls.

I have seen that 216 several times, I have to return every now and again to reassure myself it hasn't gone for fragging yet. Christ knows why I care.

I don't know about Jaywick, but there certainly used to be one at that end of Clacton. It was a Butlins until 1983/84, then became Atlas or something for a year or so, but is now housing I believe. Very seedy and rundown when I went there for daytrips in the early '80s, sad air of what it was once like.

Jaywick itself is in theory a big holiday camp, a lot of the houses weren't meant to be lived in permanently. As a good Essex resident, my mum used to go for holidays there in the '50s.

I've had some good spotting trips down there too, but it's tricky with lots of the roads being dead-ends and there not really being the ability to turn round at the end of them. Cycle would probably be the best way I reckon.

I usually do a trip to Walton and Frinton too if I'm down there. The latter has some rather nice '30s Arts & Crafts and Deco houses.

OldFord, I'd love to pop in and see whatever's stashed away sometime. I'll try and remember next time I'm down in Ipswich.

Next time you're in The Big F don't forget to bang furiously on my front door and demand tea and scones.

My big plan was to go to Frinton and Kirby Cross yesterday as i remember seeing a lot of cars on an industral site whilst looking around on streetview, sadly i ran out of light though.

RG - There's still a few camp sites in Jaywick if you look here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=j ... 3&t=h&z=16 I'm not sure what they are like, I said to Hannah about how disapointed I'd feel if I'd just travelled 300 miles to stay there for a week!.

And as SL said, most of the aveunes are dead ends, I saw a few other old cars up them but didn't fancy my chances of turning around at the end, I had a hard enough job turning around after taking thoses photos of the SD1 and the MG Midget.

This is what the aveage house looks like here, no joke, it is the most depressing place I've ever been too.

good spots trigg, stop pussyfooting about trying not to upset jaywick people

they all look like jeremy kyle show guests, run tax dodging cash only building companies/road gangs/skip hire and start every conversation with " I'm not being funny, but...."

MAN UP NOW!!!!!

My friends and I have done the "Jaywick Challenge" a few times. This entailed leaving Colchester late at night and driving round the place in whatever woeful old heap I possessed at the time. For extra testosterone points we drove perilously close to some of the tattiest houses; introduced engine revving three point turns outside ground floor bedroom windows and even explored the place on foot.

Surreptitiously switching the car off ond claiming engine failure down some dark and dodgy side road is also a good one.

Jaywick is a fantastic place to dispose of vin-removed taxless, insuranceless heaps. Just park them on somebodys driveway, they're always happy for the contribution.

A few more from the last few days in my local area.

I was shocked to see this spanking Cavalier down my road, It really was one of the tidiest one's I've seen.

This was a great spot this afternoon!, I posted photos of this last April when the old boy had dragge dit out of the garden after 20 yeras and was fitting an engine to it, It was great to see it back on the road again. (Notice it's parked in the same place as the Bentley Eight the other day, there's always shite in this car park!)

Cor! That 213S looks well tidy. Minus points, though - those are SE wheeltrims. I'd still have it, mind.

Seeing that where I used to work, Lind / Cooper BMW in Ipswich has been demolished and is going to be a Burger King, gives me strange emotions. I don't honestly know whether to laugh or cry.
