Hyundai Pony X2, dismal motoring for those with low self esteem

Anyone remember this from a few months back?

 

Super-basic early X2 Pony. It's in remarkable condition (genuine 26k with no welding or body repairs) but is probably the most miserable joyless vehicle I've yet experienced! 155 X 13 tyres as well.

Its been sat on my drive for about 8 months so today I started seeing about getting it ready for an MOT.

 

First off went to motor world for a pair of wiper blades. Easy win. Next, tried to drive it up the drive but there was summert up with the clutch - it would not engage when you took your foot off the pedal!!! FFS man.

 

I fathomed out it was the fault of the clutch shaft that transmits your foot motion from the cable to the thrust bearing. It had only flippin seized up!!! I spent ages trying to free it off but couldnt. Eventually I admited defeat. There was nowt for it but to remove the friggin gearbox!!! So I did that this evening.

 

 

 

Can you believe it, I took the gearbox out (only took an hour) then spent almost 2 hours farting about with the clutch shaft, oiling it and twatting it with hammers to loosen it up. drilled a couple of extra holes in the gearbox casing to hel the oil get to where it was needed. After what seemed like a freakin age it was acceptably smooth in operation so I cleaned out the bellhousing and put the box back in, almost giving myself a hernia in the process.

 

Anyway the clutch now works perfectly so I have dropped the dismal old crock in at my local MOT shop - more news tomorrow!!!

If it was me, I would have rolled it back out of the workshop and added "free off clutch arm" to my task list (or, rather, task book ; a list doesn't have enough space !).

Not really, the only thing I'm mildly worried about is the emissions, it doesn't run too well and seemingly its running mega rich. Its got some Japanese carburettor with a million pipes and tubes coming off it so I will have to see if I can do owt with it. I noticed yesterday that some donkey has removed any bypassed the inline pez filter, so some jet or vent is probably blocked

Just ragged this back from the MOT station. Thanks to the carb problems you have to give it a good caning to make progress but its actually better to drive than i was expecting, got that tight-but-revvy feel that low mileage japanese engines have and it feels like it weighs about 6kg. Will hopefully have a proper look at the carb tomorrow but I think its the same as a Proton 1.3 and there are new and used carbs available for those so I'm sure we can sort something.

Please keep this on the road. Old Hyundais are rare as anything and like someone else said, far, far more interesting than the usual showfare.

Oh yeah I'll get it squared up. I've lost a week of my retest period to freezing weather but nowt gees me up like the thought of chucking £40 away so hopefully I'll get on it this week.

Had a look at this tonight. I convinced myself the choke was stuck on. The symptoms are:

 

• Emissions test spectacularly failed
• Exhaust fumes stink to high heaven, even when the enigne is fully warmed up
• engine starts on the button from cold but will not rev up cleanly and will not reach max revs when warm, just fluffs and struggles to get past about 3500-4000 rpm.

 

It defo seems mega rich. SO I pulled the air filter off and had a look.

 

 

Annoyingly the choke isnt stuck at all.

 

I checked for split pipes and seized up linkages and found none. I really couldnt see owt wrong and there doesnt seem to be any mixture adjustments that can be made so I whipped the carb off to inspect it.

 

One thing I noticed is that the second choke (the lower one in the picture) does not seem to open at all. I thought it was seized so when I had the carb off I inspected it. It's vacuum operated with no direct mechanical connection to the first choke. Its not seized, but there does not seem to be enough vacuum to operate it. I used another pipe to connect it directly to a redundant pipe stub on the inlet manifold and it opens then - the engine sounds fearsome when you're stood over it and the second choke opens, it revs up in a nanosecond.

 

 

I'm at a bit of a loss really. it seems to be a Mikuni-solex carb, not the same as what you get on a Proton annoyingly but I couldnt find any trakemarks or tags on it so I dont even know what model it is for buying a rebuild kit or whatever.

 

I think you can adjust the idle mixture, but there is clearly something wrong beyond that. You can see the juice trickling out of the main jet when its idling, i'm not sure the idle mixture screw is actually doing anything at all.

 

BAsically I don't really know what to do with it. i dont think I'm gonna find a Mikuni-Solex carburettor specialist who will take a look at it for me..... I might take the carb off again and dismantle it on the bench and see if I can find any split diaphragms or whatever. Any ideas among the shite community?

It's not a second choke. It's a vacuum operated secondary butterfly.

In normal operation it runs only on the primary one, which is operated by the throttle cable.

Once this is fully open, the secondary is beginning to open as well, but vacuum operated

by the secondary air valve.

There is a lockout that prevents the secondary to open under warm up.

I hazard a guess that the choke is maladjusted, so that the lockout remains in place

even when hot.

Have you had the top off of it to check the usual suspects like the needle valve and the float level?  The fuel coming out of the main sort-of flags this up.  If you want to try to squeeze it through its retest, it could probably be "jetted down" by sticking strands of fine copper wire down the main jet until it's happy; I've done this in the past for more MPGs although this sounds like it needs something closer to a bit of 0.6 MIG wire in there!

No I haven't, but I have been thinking about it all day and I reckon I'm going to remove the carb and do that, check the float level etc as best I can. Also I want to have another look at the mechanism that opens the second butterfly. Even if the whole carb is a mystery, that actuator and mech ought to be simple enough to fathom out.
