1979 Toyota Celica

Recommended Posts

This is the remains of a Toyota Celica I bought recently. It’s missing half it’s interior, doesn’t start and has had several “upgrades” by someone who obviously wanted to race it. At least there’s no rust. Yet.... fits right in

Photo not present though!!!!!

All I can see is:

fits right in

Hi and welcome to JNC.

Tuned in! Some of these are well cool.

I remember a guy ahd a red one of these on Deals on Wheels. He also had an Iguana that used to come for rides, on his shoulder.

If it was an RA28 or TA22 I would combust with envy.

Get the pics up!

I had a 79 Celtics fastback years ago. Great car but it had serious rust issues even back then.

I believe these are the pics... for some reason Heidel_Kakao's third-hand copied links were live (???)

Anyway, nice Celica! Impressed at the lack of rust!

Still sad that I sold mine. This does look solid in the right places, though.

Keep us posted with progress, please.

Those stupid plastic arches!!!

Haven't seen one in years. Always remember my brother had a gold one in the garage for a few years in the early 90s. Always going to fix it right up to the day he sold it :-)

I was looking for ages for that photo. I found the (fake) bonnet scoop in the boot.

What's your plans for this one? Get it up and running, add a few of the missing interior bits and then a coupla passes of clearcoat to top it off?

I am rather fond of these A40-series liftbacks; fella I worked with had a very clean '78 one in a sort of terracotta colour.

The earlier ones were fit - they reminded me of a mini dodge challenger.

That’s about It although I do want to give it a decent paint job. It needs front seats aswell which will be hard to find.

Oh, that's a beaut!

Get it road worthy and drive as is (would be my way).

Whatever, will be a sweet car when you are done.

I like this shape of Celica.  This and the one that came afterwards with the weird 45o inclined pop-up headlights.

Hello and welcome @jamesC. There's a few of us posting on the mainland forum here so good to have you along. Lovely looking Celica you have there man. Looking forward to seeing progress.

Hey there Largactil, just wondering if your forum name has anything to do with Amebix?

I snapped it at the Irish Festival of Speed in Limerick 4-5 years ago.

Afraid not - more the chlorpromazine variety.

I swapped a Renault 14 for one of those Celicas when I was at college, would that aircon compressor mean it's an XT? If so it's the rarest of rare things. Mine had the bastarding bonnet pins added also, swapped it after a few trouble free years for a Saab 99.

Yes it is. It’s was an automatic aswell which is even rarer. This needs the bonnet pins as some of the bonnet bracing has been cut out.

Ah, mine had the pins because it had been stuffed into a pole leaving a bit of misalignment in the catch.
