It would be advisable to replace the top bearing for the shock too,as they can get rather corroded  in there.

New genuine ones from Ford aren't that expensive.

Cheers but this car had been top mount bearings last year just prior to me buying it

So the car did do a regen, but also the fuel in oil increased.

Are you sure you’ve not got an incontinent injector? I’d suggest a leak off test.

You mean the injector in the dpf?

There's no injector actually in the DPF, but it uses the normal injectors firing on the exhaust stroke, to carry out a regen.

I might be totally wrong with this - but my understanding is that Ford have a seperate fuel vapouriser which fires fuel into the exhaust to regen…

On the Euro 5 yes, not the earlier ones.

Injector leak off on the four injectors on the engine I’m talking about.

No idea. If it’s not rattling or obviously flapping about sling it in the glovebox. Had this on the first clutch change, a metal bracket, must go somewhere along the clutch hydraulic pipework, no idea where it went but it’s running fine without it.

To cut a long story short I paid for a clutch and DMF change - wasn’t financially worth messing about on the driveway, the garage were so incompetent I ended up helping them put the car back together, unbeknownst to me they’d put a used clutch and SMF in, but by time I’d had it out with them the gearbox was back on. Just to get the fucker out of there I  was fitting the driveshafts, lower intercooler ducts, bottom arms and so on, I just wanted the fucker out of there.

Got the money back a few days after a ‘frank discussion’.

If I was a betting man I’d say it clips in under a seat and holder carpet mats in place

That's exactly what they are for.

When I had the car, the oil level would only climb up the dipstick when the car was doing failed regens.  Once I reset the DPF via Forscan the oil level stayed where it should be.

Which is the same as now, it only climbs when it fails a regen.

It's mildly annoying as there are no long fast roads near us but it does get done on her commute if she drives like a looney, which is her normal way of driving.

Mondeo gang, is anyone driving a petrol?

I am considering an S-Max when I get round to selling my van and getting a camper. Naturally I'm looking at the early ones as they are cheap.

Seeing as I don't do many miles and the diesels will start getting legislated out of more and more cities I am thinking 2.0 or 2.5 pez.

Anyone know what sort of mpgs I'd get in mostly urban driving?

Anything much to look out for on the petrols?

Is an S-Max actually much bigger than a Mondeo? I don't strictly need 7 seats just 3 proper seats in the back as have 3 kids of which 2 are still in booster seats. And mondeos seem much cheaper.

An S-MAX with the 2.5T is rocking horse cack. I'd say, with the two rear seats removed, it'd be larger than a Mondeo (having sat in both and looked in the boot).

The 2.5T in early Focuses, Mondeos and S-MAXes was a little prone to split/cracked liners due to the engine being a bored out 2.3 from Volvo. I think this was fixed midway through 2008. A cracked liner is game over, unfortunately. Similar symptoms to HGF.

The 2.0 was alright if a little gutless. Seemed to be alright in the Mondeo at low speeds but lacked torque as soon as you were doing 40-60mph etc.

I'd say both would be likely to get 30mpg average.

I would get a diesel but the ones in my price range are all euro 4 and in the next year or 3 you'll be taken out and shot for driving such things near another human.

I do see there aren't many 2.5s about but they are possibly worth risking/waiting for, my mate has a focus st with the same engine and it's very good.

Wouldn’t bother with the petrol if I’m honest, not that quick and not that good on fuel. Same for 2.5, crap ok fuel and tax. 1.6 petrol surprisingly problematic as well so I’ve heard. Any Mondeo Mk4 is only a couple of grand so it’ll have fell to bits by time you’ve been banned from your own driveway.

2.0 diesel all the way.

30mpg petrol or 45mpg in the diesel and not having to drive everywhere tickling the throttle.

180k at least it’s probably on a fresh flywheel and the belt will have been done. Just watch for any idle issues or the DPF showing off.

Do they all have a DPF? The early ones I checked the reg for came up as euro 4, I thought that would be no DPF?

All except the 1.8 TDCI have a DPF. Euro 5 has the wet system, the earlier has the regen performed on the exhaust stroke. Unless you are handy with the spanners I’d avoid the 1.8 as it has the dreaded wet belt, do-able definitely but it’s a bit labour intensive.

Thanks, yeah would be after a 2.0 on the basis that as far as I know it's the same engine as my van (2.0HDI 16v 120hp) and I've had no problems with it (although mine doesn't have a DPF)

In our mk4 Mondeos they are 140ps rather than 120, not sure if engine is different or whether it's just turned up on the Mondeo, I know the Citroen engines of the same era made 140ps.

To be honest I'm finding it pretty gutless, or at least slow to spool up and do anything, maybe that's just mine.

Edit: confusingly Chez Fourteener has two of them, one does feel slightly less lethargic perhaps, but as its Wifeys i don't drive it much so I might be imagining the difference,  mine is an estate so its a bit heavier.

Question begged therefore:

Are you meant to be able to count to 5 from asking for power to getting any?

Posted

Yeah apart from the 2.2 they’re all dog slow. Could be worse. Could be the 1.6 petrol, chomping through fuel at 30mpg and going nowhere.

But then I’ve had a chipped 130 TDCI Mk3, that was furiously quick. But ran like a dog. I’m happy trundling along slowly.

Yeah in the vans there were 120, 140 and 160ps options.

Bit surprised you say they are slow as my van moves ok for the size of it, but you do have to thrash it, there isn't much there below about 2500rpm.
