AS Communal MK4&5 Mondeo Thread Anyone want to save a 2008 Tit X for £300?

I’m reasonably certain that on these one cam is belt driven from the crank and the other is driven by a short chain off the other cam pully. I don’t know what sort of DIY job it is though

 

I’m inclined to agree with swerving it the more I think about it, the potential limp mode nightmare and timing belt/clutch roulette

 

But, it is really, really nice

 

I may offer him an insulting amount and see what he says, I think he’s had it up for a while

The limp mode would trouble me,could be anything.

May be a simple fix though.

 

The cam belt and clutch wouldn't.

Has it been used for towing? If it hasn't the DMF and clutch are long lived on these.

 

With the engine running,press the clutch pedal about half way,

listen for rattles,if it's quiet,all good for for the moment.

 

If the Cam belt is anything like the 2.0 to change it's straightforward to do,

I used a SKF kit on mine,has everything you need.

It may be a simple fix, but I'd swerve it purely on the fact the advert says it drives perfectly.

 

It's mostly likely given him grief, incoming big bill, he's had the warning lights turned off and advertised it hoping they wouldn't reappear. Day before you show up it shits itself and he has to admit it's knackered. He wasn't going to.

 

If you really really must, go back with a decent fault code reader.

If the 2.2 is the same lump that was in my 2010 transit, it's all chain driven. Mine had 2 egrs fitted and neither put it in limp mode. Great engines and other than the egr it gave zero trouble in 125k miles. egr is about £30 on ebay.

So I need to pick the autoshite hive mind, I’ve been to look at a Mk4 Mondeo today, a 2.2 TDCi, the car is in really beautiful condition and it’s cheap, however, despite the seller describing it as 'drives perfectly' when I got there he was quite immediately upfront about the fact if you go over 3k rpm it goes into limp mode. That and the radio doesn’t work, less worried about the radio.

 

Sure enough he took me out on a test drive and like clockwork, go above 3k, engine malfunction comes on the dash and it goes into limp mode. He was fairly certain it’s the EGR valve but what say ye?

 

It also, despite having full ford history didn’t appear to have any invoices for the cam belt being done and it’s on 156k miles. Nor any receipts for a clutch or flywheel.

 

My head is saying give it a miss, but my heart really, really likes the condition it’s in. I’ve never seen one this good and I’ve looked at quite a few dogs with less mileage.

Run. Preferably in the other direction. There’s loads of these about for less than £1500, really wouldn’t piss about with the orphans like this. Chances are he’ll know full well it’s Celine Dion.

 

Wouldn’t worry too much about no receipt for a clutch, at cheap money you buy on face value. Anyway anyone can knock up a receipt for a clutch.

Usually the EGR boost hose.

 

They have timing belts, but the cams are chain driven on the 2.0.

Think it’s the same on the 2.2? Mine’s not needed a belt kit yet.

I thought all of the 2.2's were. That's very cheap then, even with the issues.

I have no idea if the 2.2 is based on the 2007-2010 tough engine or the fickle 2010-2014 lump. If it's the latter then walk away.

It’s a 59 plate so you’d think probably the former, but who knows with Ford

 

This is the car, if anyone with bigger stones than me is interested, I can vouch it is in beautiful condition and he will deffo take 2100, but it definitely does not “drive perfectly”

I really like these, they seem to have held their value much better than the MK3 which has been in the sub 500 quid zone for ages now.

 

Even a 57 plate...so 11 year old MK4 in decent nick is usually well north of a grand which is bad news for bottom feeders like me who see any car that costs more than I can draw out of the cashline in a day as overpriced:D

Seems about 35mm shorter, from a quick measurement. Which should be pretty good.

The standard action is fine, but a touch shorter and more precise is always welcome.

Probably if you are buying from some tin pot outfit that’s been there a fortnight. Run away signs are extremely abrupt gentlemen with necks like a birthday cake and aggressive looking tattoos sitting in portakabins. You can usually gauge if they know their stuff or not by what they stock, if it’s ropey old shit you know you are dealing with idiots, same for poor English in an advert. Nothing is a substitute for turning up and seeing what the craic is on site though. Another one to avoid is anything containing ‘Trade Cars’ etc, it’s a pointless get out for traders retailing absolute dog shit under the guise you are buying it ‘in the trade’ hence getting a bargain.

Partially unrelated, but the last few "expensive" cars I have bought have come from Car Giant. The smax is an ex Vodafone Newbury car, so I asked a few people about their company cars before buying.

 

I don't know what they do about warranties, certainly they offer a purchase warranty, but presumably they are still covered by the sale of goods act.
