It just doesn’t look stock, calibrated speedo’s are marked in 1mph increments rather than the usual 5mph. As those are.

These are the standard low spec clocks (ie the ones without the screen)

Does anyone know if the rear seat from a hatchback fit into the estate?

What’s the colour name again? My 57 plate 2.0 petrol was the doom blue as well but for the life of me I can’t remember the ‘proper’ name. In retrospect it was too dark, I should have gone for the Tonic light blue.

2.0 petrol was quite a rare choice, I don’t think I ever saw another and It was dropped even before the facelift in 2010.

I can confirm that Black Boothandle Gang is still at large and lurking outside Hilti dealers.

IMG_20180425_172552.jpg

OK, so a picture of the rear of the car would have been better. I accept that. I pulled up on the road and clocked the black bootlid handle, had a proper OMG moment, fumbled for my phone camera and then the traffic started moving. And let me tell you, on the mean streets of Slough Trading Estate, if you don't move with the traffic you're not getting home. So you can have a front shot and deal with it.

I also accept that's not a Mk4. So it doesn't even belong in this thread.

Overall, I score myself 1.6 out of 10 and have put myself in detention.

So I have been doing some additions to the 'Edge' over the last few of weeks.  First up, the reason for even (half) owning it in the first place - a Towbar.  I got a bit of a deal on this because I bought it online from PF Jones - more correctly I bought the cheapest towbar they had, but when they sent it out they actually sent a Witter - result.  However upon fitting it I was a bit disappointed - stupid things such as powder coated captive bolts so you couldn't get the nuts on, which I had then had to blowtorch off - made steps that should have taken a few minutes take over an hour.  But we got there

post-20353-0-70551100-1525094559_thumb.jpg

Wiring it was relatively straightforward, helped out by the fact there is a fuse box in the boot that I can take the necessary feeds from for the 12S electrics so I didn't have to run any cables direct to the battery.  I don't know if it was strictly necessary but I have used a bypass relay which added in an extra layer of complexity, but its still pretty rudimentary stuff.  In case you're wondering a bypass relay takes a feed directly from the battery for powering the trailer lights, this is so it doesn't draw power from the cars lighting circuits and potentially affect bulb warning systems, LED lights, can-bus operation etc.

Next up was ICE - now, I am a bit of an audiophile and one of the things I use it for at festivals is playing music unsociably loud.  I am also an Apple apologist and wanted one with Apple Car Play.  Look away now if the thought of spending more on a stereo than several cars offends you.  *Non-autoshite behaviour contained herein*  Its a Pioneer AVH-Z5000DAB.  Ordinarily I only accept Alpine car stereos but they are *really* expensive!  For the head unit, connects2 wiring kit, sub wiring kit, steering wheel controls adapter etc etc it came to a lot of hundreds, but its 50/50 with my co-owner so it takes the sting out.  It was between this and a Kenwood system, but in the end the Pioneer won out because you can still play CD's\DVD's whereas the Kenwood was mechless. although I probably hardly ever will play CD's, its nice to have the option.

Initially they sent us the incorrect wiring harness, it fitted but it was not the can-bus enabled one.  Now when doing jobs like this Can-Bus is really cool, because it can tap into the CAN and give you outputs for things like handbrake position, reverse gear selection, speed pulse without having to actually splice into those circuits.  So all the inputs the stereo needs (for things like preventing watching DVD's when moving, activating reverse camera etc) are plug and play.  Eventually they sent us the correct one and it worked like a charm.

It is a really handsome unit and i'm properly happy with Apple Car Play - it works beautifully, it also works with deezer too so that's a bonus.

I ought really to get a picture of the whole car but I never seem to remember.  Hopefully most expenditure has now been expended on it.

First rule of Black Boothandle Club is you don't talk about Black Boothandle Club.

Second rule is 10% off powertools over £250 and you get a free diamond drillbit set.

I wanted to ask him why some staff had hatches rather than estates but I never got the chance.

Finally finished the wiring on the tow bar today, it was physically fitted and half wired but I’d run out of wire to run the 2 main feeds for the 12S split charging and fridge feed. I also needed to extend some of the wires that cross the car to pick up the LH sidelight and indicator. For anyone thinking of doing this, we ran the cables in the drivers side because there was already a hole/grommet. But really you’re better off running them in the passenger side, you can pick up all the wires you need there bar 2. And that’s where the rear fuse box is.

Anyway, I tested by dragging the caravan out of its winter storage plot. It all worked flawlessly. So it’s now ready to go in 3 weeks time for the first festival of the year.

Actually remembered to snap a pic too

I acquired some of the correct polished finish roof rails, so after dropping the headliner (quick and easy*), it was a simple and not at all concerning matter of drilling x8 22mm, and x4 10mm holes through the roof skin.

Looking great though IMO and I like the added practicality.

I've had four Mk4 Estates and sadly none of them have been blessed with roof rails. Are they expensive and hard to fit?

They aren’t expensive, used. They’re about £600 new, though.

I had a set before, but they were the painted silver type, a bit knocked about and wouldn’t match my car. They cost £60 delivered and sold for £100 delivered.

These ones were £100 delivered and are in superb condition, as well as being the later finish as is correct for the car, to match the window surrounds, diamond cut sections of the wheels etc. Mega barg and very rare to see these come up.

There aren’t any guides out there, only several shitty ETIS instructions for removal/refitting, so my pics are by far the best source of info to show what needs to be done.

As for fitting, it’s headliner down. That in itself means in my case, remove sunvisors, grab handles, x8 lights, sunglass holder/ambient light mic thing, a couple of clips at the back, A, B, C & D pillar trims, weather strips on all doors and hatch, unplug various connectors including x4 going to RVM and the two piece cover. Loosen parcel shelf supports and recline front seats and flip rear backrests forward, to support headliner.

It won’t come all the way out, due to many wires being stuck to it.

You will see the lip below the roof skin has the holes already present for the roof rail bolts to pass through.

Use these as a guide to centre punch the skin, then drill a pilot hole. Then from outside, a clearance hole and then 22mm holesaw.

Do this twice for each corner.

Then offer the rail up and the little clips in between the main bosses will show you where each 10mm hole needs to be.

I used masking tape when drilling, so the clips left an indentation in that.

Clean up and paint and protect the holes. Torque rails down to 10nm and you’re sorted.

It took me and a mate about 5 hours to do this start to finish, just taking our time in the sun and allowing paint to dry.

You won’t be able to refit your A pillar trims as you will have broken the 79p each clips.

Or maybe that is just me lol.

If you do fit some and have any questions, ask away and I will happily help if I can!

Nice HU choice mate, I have the same in my MR2 turbo. Along with Focal Utopia components, an Audison amp and I am thinking sub-wise of a couple of 8” Focal Polyglass.

So I get it.

They never made a sporty one did they? No V6?

Iirc they put the 2.5t 5pot Focus ST / Volvo lump in. I don't think it was ever set up as a sporty suspension setup though (ie ST).

The Titanium X Sport is the ST of these. Either Ecoboost or 2.2 TDCi.

You’d be surprised. The TXS is something like 25mm lower and a very planted and chuckable thing.

I have no idea why people on the FB groups fit aftermarket lowering springs or coilovers.

They sit and ride great.

I think they’re off a Ghia? My mate put them on, bit aspirational but the standard trims are a bit scruffy looking.

Overrun that TXS estate looks flippin gorgeous. You have balls of steel drilling huge holes in the roof.

Cheers, CF. It’s a lovely car and I am pleased I spent the time to find one with all the options (aside from roof rails lol).

Your wheels are from a Ghia, yeah.

Washed today, so took a cheeky snap or two. :-)

I saw a PFL TXS on what I believe were 20” S-Max Wheels, earlier.

It was slammed and pulled them off well, IMO.

To be honest I think Ford absolutely nailed it with the TXS and there are no modifications required. Especially the later ones like yours with the 19's. I love it

We did look at a couple of TXS's when looking for ours but for the budget we had they were real dogs. To be honest Mk4 Mondeos in general were mostly dogs below around 5 grand. In the end we went for youth and low mileage over looks and big wheels.

Oh aye, I should have remembered my Ghia had the same alloys although after a knock it lost its Ghia grille.

Spotted a saloon in a carpark yesterday. Like a Vectra C it looked identical but stretched at the rear. I use to prefer saloons over hatches (carina e/avensis, cav, sierra etc) but nowadays it looks odd. Is that just me?
