Is that Walmart still in Milton Keynes? As much as I dislike the whole supermarket experience (although I quite like the self checkout facility

The best thing about the self checkouts, at least the ones in Tesco, are that they take loose coins so you can take along a bag full of pennies to pay for your stuff. Even if you do have to stand there like a lemon for ten minutes while it noisily sorts through it.

It does indeed.

I well remember going in to the first one (IIRC) in York, many years ago (around 1974) and being quite impressed. It was certainly far better than any of the competition at the time.

At the time I worked in the photographic department of a Swedish mail-order house that had an attached supermarket that made the ASDA look like a corner shop.

I'm at work on nights, and just went out for a breath of air and someone's left a framed print on board (I think) of a nice old steam train out in the car park by the bins. It has been successfully liberated. :D

It might be shit and bin-dipping, but it's nicer to look at than half the stuff I've paid for in the past.

Going to the dentist this morning.

You what?????????? Well firstly, it was Mrs Ramrod's visit, not mine. Secondly, she might have a job out of it (37 years experience in UK as a dental nurse/receptionist in a 25,000 patient practice; got to be worth something). Thirdly, while she was in the surgery I was offered a cuppa... which came with, get this, three chocolate biscuits! :D

Tonedpear, well done sir! Good for you!

Probably, but we're new patients, I was only there as support and my last checkup was in England two years ago (should I be booking in?).

Even more well-done than I thought! Reminds me a lot of the Arthur Askey movie "The Ghost Train" for some reason...

I do wonder if it's been left for the bins cos it's haunted and the last 3 houses it's been in have all burned down or suffered a child fatality or sommat. probably just cos it's ropey and old though.

Course, it's also possible someone loves and treasures it and just left it there while re-organising their boot and will be searching frantically for it, in which case I'll return it to them unharmed, assuming they ask around. But I hope not.

I got a bit of metal stuck in my eye this afternoon (angle grinder incident - yes I was wearing goggles but the damn thing still got me) and it's really been pissing me off. I was almost resigned to spending the evening at the eye infirmary when I decided to try fishing it out with a magnet.

It worked, which is why this is in the grin thread.

Reminds me of of a few years ago whilst I had a good job working nights. I spotted a framed drawing of huge metal-cutting machine a mate of mine was working on, the picture had been left on top of a pile of rubbish whilst the place was being refurbished, I think the picture was presented to the company for buying the machine. The glass cover of the picture had been smashed so I took the picture home along with a piece of clear plastic, repaired the frame and slotted in the plastic and gave the pic to my mate.

He has recently been made redundant though so not sure of he still has the picture.

Oooh. It's King George V, wearing the bell used on the tour of the USA! Are you going to keep it? Hint hint. (GWR crack express loco, beautiful in action and to hear, I first saw it when I was 12.....made me 3 hours late to school. The Physics teacher made me explain to the class how a steam locomotive works..... I was let off detention because I gave an informed report!)

Do people reorganize their boots often over there? I mean, is it habitual? Or kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing?

Depends if they're stealing CISCO stuff or something. It's plausible. I'm just taking a rack of routers home for the weekend. *whistle's innocently*. Oh no, I'm going to squash that priceless painting of a train that I'm taking to auction tomorrow with all these heavy networky gubbins. I'll just prop it *here* while I fit these bastards in...

I dunno. There's a decent selection of weird bastards about. It's definitely not a once in a lifetime thing though, seeing as they all have to have the most recent incarnation of whatever wanker chariot they're batting about in this week.

In situ, for the benefit of the tape, m'lud.

Edit: Shitting hell, you're right. I've had a good look at that loads of times at York and never twigged. Well played. 8)

You'd think so, wouldn't you? Likewise taking a mountain cabin for a chunk of the winter and only setting off home when you have a completed manuscript, featuring the death of your series heroine...

No time this year, sadly. Me and the mrs and another couple are renting this cabin out in the woods... Bobby-Joe's really looking forward to it.

My son just asked me to scroll the screen back so he could see the train - straight away he said "George V, that's at york.."

Also I had (may stll have somewhere a OO gauge hornby model of it.

Pssst. You keeping it? Cough. hint.

I'm planning on keeping it, yeah. Sorry. My daughter will go ape for it, cos she was my excuse for going to york on a monthly basis for years and she loves a good train. If I find I can't find a nice place for it in the house, however, first dibs are yours.

Ace story though! 8)

Holy toledo! I'll definitely keep it then.

No, he has a picture of Mallard on his wall that we rescued from a skip. No need to fight, there are plenty of abandoned train pictures to go around.

PS, I tried re-organizing my boots once, they didn't fit so I put them back on the way they were.

We just had an OMGWTF moment - a large orange ball of flame moving across the sky. Totally baffled as to what it was, various theories about plane crash/aliens/huge meteor until another one floated into view and we got a better look. Someone down the street is setting off chinese lanterns :D

Oh, and finding an on-line insurance quote from a company we hadn't tried before made us very happy. It's roughly two grand less than anyone else have quoted so we gave them a call, confirmed details and will roll with it in July.
