Buying from Belguim and driving back???

Recommended Posts

With no MOT/Belguim/French equivalent,is this possible, obviously it would be insured

Posted

Possible? Of course.

Legal? No.

Find out what the punishment for an expired test is and decide if you think its worth the risk.

Hint..... its 135 euros in France, which is significantly less than it would cost you for getting it transported.***

***assuming its otherwise roadworthy and doesnt look hanging.

I think they take the plates off when a car is sold in Belgium, could complicate matters slighty

Not if you bung on UK plates that show as MOT'd - although this could possibly complicate matters beyond your wildest dreams!

I imported a new transit from Belgium in 2000, I was told then it was perfectly legal to drive it back with no plates on at all insured on the chassis number or I could pay to have it registered on Belgian plates and insure it on them

I chose the latter and drove back from hull to warrington without a problem rather than risk every copper and vosa van on the M62 spitting their tea out as I went past

A car with belgian plates on is unlikely to attract any attention in the UK , belgium however, do they have ANPR

Belgian plates are OWNER assigned - so you'll never* get a car with them on. The rear is tagged and should be handed back to the authorities so the register is up to date. If you find someone you can convince you're a plate 'collector' wanting the plate to go with it then you could try - but you'll usually always have a resounding FRO

Do as Wack did - get it OK and drive back.

EDIT - I do know of someone who put UK plates on it for EU side and swapped just before the ferry for DE plates for UK driving...... all illegal and not condoned - but he risked it and got it home.

As you said it isn't currently tested - that would not be an option I'd take.........

Further EDIT - if the car is 'classic age - then test is only lights and brakes in Belgo..... so 'could' be wiggled and all legal(ish). If not then the main test for younger cars is a lot stricter than UK MoT. NL - rust is 'judged' IIRC and only a fail if more than 25% of the panel.... or such like  - so it depends upon your source material.

It looks like its on Luxemborg plates, its near the border

Can I add - as residnet here - have everything you could possibly think of needing - in original form before you go anywhere near the officials. Belgium is famous for its bureaucracy and they'll reject you for anything and everything - it really is a pit of jobsworths in Tour n Taxis........

On the other hand - it also hosts expo's - so you could time it to see some great stuff!

Van is exquisite - I'd seen it listed and drooled too....... top purchasing fella.

Al - that link is for Belgium - they won't do a Lux auto....... Any vehicle not already Belgian needs to be registered with a Belgian local (resident) and transferred to their name first. This isn't possible without a prrof of sales with a copy of the sellers ID card/passport too -  It's a ballache - believe me.

I'd check with the seller if they can arrange anything - as they may be able to sort temp insurance that allows you to drive off (vehicle is covered) into the sunset on that photo!

Pre 73 vehicles in Lux are not required to hand in plates - so you'd be OK on them - but of course no Controle Technique is in place - so still not all covered. I'm not familiar with the controle tech for oldtimers in Lux - so wouldn't want to steer you wrong on that - I'll drop a line to a couple of Lux based friends.

Feel free to drop me a PM if I can help. It isn't too far from me really.......

OK, some Luxembourg gubbins:

You can order Luxembourg transit plates in advance. Whether or not you can cross borders with them depends on the regulations of the countries through which you travel.

Competent authority: Société Nationale de la Circulation Automobile (SNCA).

Price: EUR 173.20 (including a EUR 100 deposit, refundable after return of the plates).

Documents/information to be presented: Identity card, car brand, vehicle identification number, details of departure and destination.

Timeframe: issued immediately.

Validity: 3 months (the month in which you receive the plates and the following 2 months)

You may also be able to apply for transit plates from your home country. Check with your relevant national authority.

Car was bought in Germany and loaded onto trailer then set off to the next collection, by the time we arrived the car on the trailer had miraculously grown UK plates so was swapped for this new German purchase,

Off we set home which is where the fun started involving drinking water overheating flapping wings and swapping bits before deciding fuck it swap the whole car.

Over 1200 miles later we where home, would I do it again or recommend it NO definitely not never.

Somewhere I still have the Algerian plates that my parents had on their Renner Six when they lived there in the '70s - I've always thought they might come in useful for any legally questionable international repatriation missions I might undertake.*

Looks like Luxembourg plates stay with the car, in which case I would say:

1. 1976 = MOT exempt

2. Insure on chassis number with a UK insurer

3. Drive home

4. Win

So you've not even spoken to the vendor yet?

Your biggest problem is getting him to believe you are serious. If you can get him to converse you are more than half way there. Even if you speak the language!

Getting it to the Uk is easy. Either buy in the late afternoon and drive through the night, or slip on a set of plates from another Country ( I.e Uk) - clear cable ties over existing so you can whip them off as you approach ferry - and plaster it with nationality stickers. Feds hate stopping foreigners, too much hassle.

Insure on the VIN ( please!)& jobs a good 'un.

There are no borders in Europe- you'd have to do something really silly to get stopped.

According to the advert it only develops 1hp so your slow journey through Flanders may attract some attention.

Avoid the hills of Ardennes.
