Rover 75 May just be okay after all. Maybe....

Morning folks, the above occurred this morning and took me by surprise as this usually runs as smooth as petrol powered silk.

Lumpy on tick over, ever with a bit of gas, plus the idle speed drops off after a few seconds and the engine will stall.

Much puzzled.

Tis a happy as fuck 1.8 kettle flavour but as I said, it normally runs like a dream although hasn't been used for a couple of weeks now.

I can't drive yet so can't take it anywhere to give it a proper run.

Damp?

might just need a warm up, blow cobwebs off if not moved for a couple of weeks?

Good luck sir :)

As previously said. Damp. Did it when I first picked it up after being stood for ages, then was fine after a run. Didn't do it again (until now obviously)

Posted

Yes, I was kind of suspecting damp as the weather has been amazingly shit, apart from this the car has been a bloody dream :)

Do all four plugs look the same or does one of them suggest it's a problem in just one cylinder? If so could be an HT lead. It's that sort of weather, furkinfreezing followed by milder weather and rain.

You can't really diagnose it until you've taken it for a proper run.  These moderns with all their new fangled electrickery can be a bit highly strung when they're not used for a bit.  I used to have a Honda that wouldn't idle properly sometimes after standing for a while, no amount of revving it and warming it up stationary would clear it, but take it for a drive and all was well again.

Cool, i suspect not very much wrong.I will clean and douse with WD40 and see how it goes from there. Wish I had a T4 and the knowledge to use it.

Bets on HT leads. Every K series I’ve had has had to have replacements. Will be rough when cold and get better as it warms up.

This is a good start. Like everyone else I think it is damp and/or condensation in something electrical. Good run should dry it all out but WD40 would be a sensible first strike

I've found K-series engines with plug gaps opened up well beyond the recommended, worth checking this since it will tempt a spark elsewhere, especially when there's roadsalt, condensation and rain.

is the engine ECU inside the scuttle (which fill with rain water) like it is on the diesels?

The drain tubes block up and then the ECU ends up under water.

Posted

Yep, those scuttles. They were clear last time but will perform the usual checks :)

How well does the 1.8 perform in the 75 when it's working properly? Is it well suited or feel underpowered? Is it refined ? I have a 1.8 45 , which performs well other than the typical k-series boom/hum at around 70-75 mph.

Posted

Is it not the body control module that lives in the scuttle and goes for the occasional bath?

I've had a couple of the V6 versions, so it is interesting to compare the two.

On an ordinary city/town kind of road there is more than enough oomph from the 1.8 to keep up and make progress. The motorway does require a bit more of an effort and kickdown has been used a bit frequently but other driving styles are available.  Day to day it's just fine, doesn't sound overly stressed or noisy. Still feels nice and wafty. The V6 on the other hand was a different beast, mine would launch quite happily when required and left many a car in it's wake. I'm happy with either engine but doing that thermostat and housing change on the V6 is a task.

Weirdly, all of the engines suit the 75 and they all work well. There’s nothing to be scared of with them; even the k-series engines are never more than £300 of HGF away from being back on the road.

Hope you’re back behind the wheel soon!

My 190 ZT is miserable around town. Alright, maybe that's a little melodramatic, but below 4k revs, it's really, really stodgy.

I'm lead to believe that my VIS motors are the culprit, but it seems an expensive experiment to find out that actually, that's just the way it drives.

Get it on t4, it will let you know if they are iffy.

Pair of them if required are £130 from here. https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/vis-motors-clearance-59-50-each

I had a limited time to fettle today due to GP, pharmacy and injection which was annoying as the weather was lovely. I sprayed the WD around various electrical bits, throttle bits and so on. I didn't have the light to look at the HT leads or plugs but I will try tomorrow.

The car was even harder to get to start or get to run, I seemed to have spilt some WD on the manifold, however, I glanced behind me and the fucking street was filled with smoke! Grey and smelled quite fumey. Not the white steam type associated with obv HGF. After the leads and plugs i am beyond my ken.

Feel physically wasted and puzzled/gutted. It was running perfectly week before last and it's just sat there since ffs. Does not fucking compute.

Just wondered if that's the same as the diesel ones, where you can fit an inline Renault 4 thermostat as a replacement.

Got one in my diesel and have hot air again. (after a long while though)

Ken rest up and don't let it worry you mate. Think of your health and wellbeing. I'll pop down and have a nosey in next couple of weeks if ok? Give you time to rest up.

I can't mate, I just cannot do anywhere near what I did before the op but that will be fine in time.

Just so bloody puzzled by this happening.
