Having spent the morning tending the old dears - I needed a tad of respite so I went to my friends MOT station. Made tea, and laughed my cock off as a Guy turned up a W reg KA and said ''dunno why you gonna bother testing it, its mint'' KA - Mint - ummmm.......No it failed - Sills rotten, Brakes fooked, emissions failed , broken NS spring , it went on and on and on..... Its hard to contain a straight face when the guy is going all Hippity hippity ga ga at his Minty mint KA

Earlier today I called Rimmers' back as I'd had a couple of missed calls from them.  They couldn't figure out why I'd sent the inlet manifold gasket back to them as incorrect as it was the correct part for my car on their system.  Other problems were that it's supposedly not a 16 valve (it is), shouldn't be on the plastic inlet manifold (but it is), the number of bolts on the manifold is incorrect (they're not) and was I sure it wasn't actually a 1.1 (it's definitely a 1.4)?

Resolution was that tomorrow I shall dismantle my car and take photographs to prove unequivocally which manifold gasket I require so I can resolve the leak that's causing the tiny loss of coolant which is mostly dribbling down the back of the engine via the duff inlet manifold gasket.

I'm not at all surprised by this, I've already been provided with incorrect brake pads and radiator when ordering according to automated systems so I'm sure this issue will continue to be a nuisance as I do more jobs on the car.

The Dolomite 1300 downpipe they supplied was nowhere close to being correct. I took this up with them and they did admit that the stainless and mild steel versions weren't exactly the same (they should be) but that the supplier insisted they were done to original plans and that I was the first to complain. Although the guy on the phoned did suggest that if they being fitted by normal exhaust fitters the pipes may just be being bent, hammered and pryed into possition, they offered a refund but the cost of posting the thing back to them made it pointless.

Doesn't mint just mean it's got a hole in the middle?

I was walking past my local garage yesterday. Red 54-plate KA on the MOT ramp. Owner looking despondent as I heard the word 'sills.' 54-plate! Isn't that like brand new?

Would sir like to be the next custodian of the Autoshite bike BX? Bosch equipped N/A XUD for maximum grimness.

Is the BX up for sale, FB? I may* be interested

yes, over the years i've been unfortunate to drive an e21, e30, e36,and e46 300 ones, and an e28 (that was a fancy m something one), an e34, e39 (i think) 500 one.

not driven a convertable one or one of the really big saloons or suv ones either.

but in all cases i came away thinking that i do not believe/understand/get the hype.

i though they were bland, uncomfortable to sit in, unpleasant to look at and just not very nice to drive.

sorry mate but I can't imagine a world without E36's. Would have another '95 325i coupe in a heartbeat.

Found an unused polydisc in the box of things when wirebrushing the Honda calipers.

Decided to see what lay behind the odd, bumpy, bubbly paint on the 300CE arches.

And the trailing edge.

Now I'm torn. I know that could be filled. Lead loading might be better. Cutting out and replacing seems excessive given the integrity of the rest of the panel, though it'll need it near the sill.

About to scratch a lifelong itch for an Alfa Romeo.

Don't! If I were to obtain that job that I want with significant payrise, an Alfa to replace my Fiesta is well up there on the options list...

Doesn't help of course that my mate keeps sending me 159 links, but this would be more towards my inital outlay at least!

FAILED to remove the inlet manifold on the Rover today.  Top three nuts easy peasy, bottom four are dogged up pretty tight which is proving rather difficult even with the sockets rather than spanners.  Add in some rain and no light to see what I'm doing and I've just sacked the job off. This has had the knock on effect of making the manifold leak too much coolant so it is grounded until the proper replacement arrives, which isn't great.  Fired off an e-mail to Rimmers with pictures of the manifold fitted to the car, a description of it all and a picture of the gasket I should have rather than the one they sent and I'm hoping they send me the right one out so I can finish the job.

Collected Blake-dog's ashes today, the urn is very smart, very pleased with that.  Also making some progress on the new house application though it is quite stressful waiting on an answer from that.  Head's all over the place at the minute, every day feels like it's a week long, so I'm hoping things slot together with minimum stress over the next week or so and I can get sorted out properly.

Saw a PT Cruiser today. So what? Well, the problem, er, is, ahem, ah, that I thought it looked pretty ace...

Now, this is a worrying development and I understand your concern. I've no idea where this sudden PT Cruiser appreciation came from. It was even a diesel. I suspect it's just a natural response to the general grimness of modern car designs. It manages retro-pastiche so much more elegantly than a Fiat 500X, any of the MINIs or the VW Beetle.

Nonetheless, I've still been left a little shaken by the experience.

I think you must be running a temperature and so are a little confused. Have a lie down in a dark room for a bit and these silly thoughts will go away.

I think it's just shite-times a changing.

Yes they were crap when new, but their not new anymore, and quite affordable, and a shite car to boot. Add in the plethora of modern crao that's preceded it after 10+ years and suddenly its probably not such a bad car.

Give it 10 years and people will be joining us who have one, and like it. We will see project threads where people reply saying they've always secretly liked these, had one when new etc, then people starting to like them because their the 20 year old chod of the time, and the rest will be history.

Was AS going when the MK3 mondeo (2001 shape) came out? I bet it got the same disdain that a 65 plate mondeo would get now, but now their £cheap (and pez for more reliability), their very popular on here for A.N.Car.

Don't, apart from having loads of room and great aircon they are unbelievably shite, I bought a gold 2 litre petrol one because the missus liked it, front suspension made of cheese, noisy gutless thirsty engine (25mpg) and the turning circle of a supertaker, the dashboard is ok in a retro sort of way, sold it and bought a zafira which was much better.

Vulg , rather than cock around with rimming bros why don't you just get one from your local factors . Did one on a mgf last month £3.36 !

Because every time I try to order parts for this car I get given parts for a different car so it doesn't seem to matter who I go to.  Also, Rimmers was recommended especially for this particular part and I have this stupid habit of listening to people these days.

Does KruJoe not have all ALL THE R8 BITS?

That's not me being unhelpful like - if I needed some stuff for an R8, I'd ask him.
