Pull each fuse in turn and put an ammeter across the fuse terminals, having made sure you know your radio code of course.

Thanks Richard, it has an aftermarket CD/Radio so wont need the radio code (me thinks).

What's a Rover 2600 Vanden Plas worth?. Daft question i know but for the last 5 years this as been parked on a driveway around the corner from me winking at me every day.

It's covered during the winter and they uncover it in the summer but it never gets used, today a friend had it in for a mot which it's failed on.

I'm guessing they are planning on selling it at last maybe?, seeing it's sat so long it doesn't seem a surprise about the brakes but the welding is a worry, I was thinking about knocking and making a offer on it, I haven't got much spare play money at the moment and i need to sell the Civic first or the Acclaim really so this could be a pie in the sky stuff.

Is it even worth pissing about with?.

Posted

Why don't you just knock at their door and ask whether they want to sell it, and how much they want for it if yes?

Posted

I think that's the way forwards, I've just made a load of excuses to the wife why i shouldn't be buying it and she just said stop being a twat and buy it if you want it!

Lucky beggar! I'd have been "politely" counselled the other way pretty sharpish!

Methinks Mrs Trigger might fancy the SD1 for herself, she does sound like one of life's winners.

Woman has consented Trig, get it bought!

Update on yesterday;

I've made it worse. So back to the beginning again. ARGH!

SD1 Looks 10000000% times better in the MOT photo, Its a rare colour (Calvary blue I think) but being a 2600 with a long failure sheet I would guess its £400 to £500 tops, absolute TOPS!!

If you can cover off the failure sheet it would fetch an easy grand with a fresh ticket and service. Unfortunately the 6 pots suffer with lower values, even tidy ones.

I would offer them £250, that's more than scrap money and its going to a good home. Go on Trig, let us know how you get on..

Posted

If that SD1 were mine, even with that fail sheet, I'd want more than £250.  But what do I know, I paid £450 for a Princess that by rights I'm sure shouldn't have had an MoT.

So would I Vulg, but ya gotta at least ask haven't ya? Go in low and ya never know.... ;-)

I was thinking around £500-600 as it was?, £60 for a pair of tyres, £50 on brakes (which i suspect just need freeing up), Hopefully £50 for the welding, no idea or the rear tie rods?. Think it's worth £1200 as a moted and taxed runner?. Am i miles off?.

Nope pretty much spot on for something like this with some tax and test.  A condition 3 moonraker blue 2600SE with T&T sold for £1350 a couple of months ago on the bay. It was also a 1984 B reg

The rear suspension rust will be trailing arm mounts, which are pita to fix

Rear suspension trailing arm mount repairs may be a PITA, but not having the missus on board can be an even bigger PITA. Using my daft logic, gotta be worth a knock at the door/ look?

Glad this isn't on my manor, I'd be there this evening with a wad out and a Scorpio as part ex.

Be interesting to know what they say Trig, Ipswich isn't that far from Essex

These can be money pita trigger and hide rust in interesting places. You should buy it obviously but make sure you pay what you're comfortable with. If you have to end up going to rimmer bros for bits it'll start getting expensive although you can get most bits off ebay and the sd1 forum (I just got a starter for £40).

WCPGW trig? Get it bought!

I "may" have pm'd a geezer on ebay selling a hopeless looking highland green mk2 granada to see if he's interested in a swap for my t+t cortina........

Posted

I'm going to sleep on it for now, I'm really fancying it but I'm also after a RS kitted Orion 1.6i Ghia that a old friend has in storage and I want to make a offer on that (he's a hoarder so that could be easier said then done) and I want to make sure I can afford it when it happens.

Posted

There's also that Saab 9000 T16 which is for sale on eBay which the seller keeps messaging me about which is also tempting but excessive 80's turbo lag and low 20's mpg is putting me off that one.

Posted

I've said it before but will reiterate, simply because I want to see better photos of that 9000, but.....

I drove STUNO's 3500 auto SD1 a short while before he sold it on and was quite impressed with it, though I admit that personally, between the two, I preferred our SAAB 9000 we'd owned before. A series 2 SD1 is a bit pub landlord (S1 in bright colours and stainless wheeltrims are much, much more desirable in my eyes) and there's plenty about in comparison to flat nose 9000s. Honestly, if I were still living in the UK I'd be sorely tempted by that one, saturated photos or not. Ask yourself which you'd prefer - an auto project with an 'undesirable' engine, or a manual 80's turbo which is ready to go? The lag probably won't be that bad, as I'm sure they'll have been a bit more developed than the 99s.

Final fun fact - a 9000 is shorter than a 900, so should fit on the driveway nicely!.

I absolutely LOVE SD1s. But I would never have a 2600 automatic again. that slushbox ruins the car. it's noticeably slower and a lot thirstier than a manual.

tie rod bushes are an easy enough fix, although the corroded bits can be tricky to repair. the rest of it is easy.

You know about the cam/head issues with the six pot?

I notice on the MOT fail sheet,in the box marked model, it says SD1. What's that all about? Rover have never called them that and surely on the logbook it would say 2600 VdP or whatever. Does this mean testers just write in whatever they feel like, rather than the details coming off the vin number?

Most MoT testers don't care.

Log books on these usually state 'Rover SD' never seen 'Rover SD1' on any official document before, well spotted Norfolk.

Agreed about the auto box it's rubbish. It's not horrible at lower speeds but it saps performance and make the top speed 70mph (without it sounding like it's going to blow up).

Anybody going to this, going to give it a look.
