Yep I hate 20's in a manual derv. My xsara was terrible as 2nd would have it screaming it's head off* but 3rd was too high. I used to keep it in 2nd more from a protest...

6 speed manual qashqai isn't as bad mainly as the dmf and sound proofing try and hide the fact that on anything more than flat or gently declines it's almost stalling out in 3rd. Back to 2nd, 2300rpm 🤷

Having driven my dad's ev enyaq in central London alot that is the perfect type of car for that sort of thing. No gears at all, zero dramas crawling along at 15mph and stop/start.

The qq is the most modern car I own and if your making progress and can floor it any gear is fine. Slow sedate traffic and I'm rowing between 4th 5th and 6th constantly, whereas 4th in the xsara would be happy from 40 to 60 without massive engine revs for no reason.

Up at 85mph on a private motorway they both do the same revs as each other despite one being an 'old' 5 speed manual and a 'newer' 6 speed one 🙄  Qashqai is only quieter because sound deadening

Is yours the 1.5 or the 1.6? Both were used in the Mk3 Scenic like ours (1.6).

a few years ago I drove a 1.5 diesel Juke in Spain and that needed to be wound up travelling on the Autovia between Malaga airport and Nerja. On the old coast ‘camion del muerte’ which was nice and flat it was brilliant!

1.5.

If I can put my foot down and let it build up speed it's fine, 6th gear whilst already at 60+ isn't bad if you ask it. But otherwise it's either rowing up and down or I've trained myself to just let it rev high for the 600ft or so before I have to slow anyway and save wear on the clutch unless I know we can maintain at least the current speed  if I changed up

Ah OK, it was still one of the greatest YT videos ever made, that and the bloke in euxton with the emu who's 'an arsehole'.

Always nice when the diagnosis is correct. Release bearing fell out in bits as the box came off. Clutch fork pushing thingy pretty eaten up too so not going back together today by the looks of things.

not sure how easy the input shaft bearing and oil seal are to do but they're also a weak spot on these so worth doing if possible

Despite there being oil kinda all over the engine and box inside the bell housing is dry muck. I'd heard about the input bearing woes though have satisfied myself with a dry seal and no wiggle on the shaft after a cursory check. My desire to split the gearbox is not strong haha.

Just stopped for tea and a bite to eat. Shall fit the clutch and get to the factors tomorrow morning. No time to work on it again till late in the week by which time they'll be a lot of guess work with what bolt goes where. All part of the fun.

did your gearbox filld/drain look like this?  Drain in red fill in yellow

I can't find another drain but struggled to get more than about half the capacity out of the drain plug even with car nose down on slope

Ha I took that one out too and got nowt. Check round the back of the box the drain looks like the fill.

Am hoping that red circled bolt does nothing too important and wasn't holding some cogs in place!

Ta..yeah I think I've seen a video now, but was worrying that bolt held something inside the gearbox otherwise it seems quite pointless having it.

Am sure it'll be fine.

Now's probably not the time to tell the tale of when i did the same thing to a Ural sidecar box and lost reverse is it...

Went as far with the Panda as I could. Loads on bikes though this is the first car clutch i've done so has been a learn on the job process. Not sure this is the correct way of lining up the plate though seems to have worked. Truth will be when lining the box up I guess.

IMG_7140.jpeg.179bd2314b6d6a9163bcf52ff14c9f02.jpeg

I then disabled the Berlingo. Wheel bearing was howling and all of a sudden has loads of play so shouldn't be driving it. Hubs off and apart and new lower ball joint fitted.

I don't have a press sadly though do have a vice. Well more than one to be honest.

IMG_7146.jpeg.3024e09c2baa90abafa88ba0ad285e6f.jpeg

Jaws a bit small to fit the hubs in though got them apart and inner bearings out.

Circlips are holding fast and would like to avoid snapping my pliers if possible so leaving them to soak and maybe come back with some heat.

Dark was setting in so that's that for today.

Not car related.

I am now a grandparent.

I barely feel like an adult, so this is confusing. But they're gonna be awesome I'm sure.

Haha no way! Fingers crossed. Surely lightning can't strike twice. Or three times. Guess we might both be replacing that output shaft bearing if the worst comes.

Guess nows not the time to tell the tale of the kid at my secondary school who got struck by lightning twice...

Surely if something had moved the bolt wouldn't have gone back in cleanly? That's what I'm convincing myself anyway .  What a fucking stupid place to put it!

Yeah looking again at the pic I make you right there. Looks like it would be a case of access denied if out of line. Funny thing is I had the Ural box incident in my head as I undid it thinking it was strange that it was such a small bolt. The Ural one was holding a spring in place which went wayward. Sure we'll be good,

I'm thinking if nothing moved in the gearbox and the bolt went back in ok it should be ok.  It's not like the bolt was holding it in place and it could drop out when removed unless something in the the gearbox was moved

As I said its a bloody silly place to have it ,  clearly, as it caught us both out. Id had a good look around the box before I took it out and couldn't see anything else that looked like a drain, coupled with the fact it had a washer

Im guessing it should be obvious if its broken once I try and drive the car...

Congratulations. You will love it. The nappies can be less than fun.

My grandson is now 6 months old. Once they are a couple months old they start to be interactive. I’ve already introduced him to important things.

Watching Susan Calman (don't hate me) in Malvern, had a ride in a Morgan. Reminded me that aged 9 we moved to a guest house in Eastbourne, No 11. No 1a was Robin Kay, motor engineer - and a Morgan specialist! Lovely guy.

The studs only stick out a few millimeters, but it's a enough to make a difference.
