Quick boring modern question...

Looking at possible future fleet shuffling over the next few months and I want something reasonably quick with a bit of boot space but doesn't need to be a massive car. Skoda Fabia VRS Combi looks an interesting proposition.

Trouble is they all come with the DSG box rather than a conventional manual. Does anyone have any experience of them - are they ok or does a world of wallet surgery await?

The DSG boxes are great, they somehow manage to be a good autobox and be able to shift manually quickly and smoothly without that big jerk you get from other semi autos. I'm not sure I would fancy having one on an 8 year old car with 90,000 miles on it mind you.

Modern car clutch issues = expensive

Modern car with double clutch issues = garage bills that feel like you've stuck guatemalan insanity peppers up your arse.

Thanks, I'm thinking that buying something a couple of years old and moving it on before it gets to say 8 years old or 100k might be doable then.

I drove a 3.2 TT with one a couple of years ago and thought it was really good. The flappy paddles are a novelty though you'll use them about 5 times then just go back to drive it like an auto.

There's an old couple in the village.

Lovely C plate Audi 80 Sport in that spectacular metallic blue with the chintzy interior.

Not a mark on it. Cosseted just about sums it up.

I said a while back that if they ever thought of selling it, to give me first refusal.

Guess what?

She came rushing up to me in the Co-Op this morning

to tell me they'd sold it.

For £350

Fucksticks.

The Rover of d00m developed a rattle in the engine bay. The culprit was quickly found, one of the alternator bolts had shaken off its nut, which was missing. I couldn't find a nut with the correct thread, so I took the bolt out and replaced it with an OMGMETRIK one as a temporary measure until I could obtain the correct nut. I was more than worried what the evil spirit would have in petto for me, having the audacity to implant something metric.

Needless to say that the revenge followed suit shortly afterwards, it didn't charge properly on the drive home yesterday. All signs of one of the rectifier diodes being AWOL were displayed. So I got me the correct nut and re-installed the original bolt, gave the alternator a good whack with a hammer for good measure, started up the car, and lo and behold, it's charging better than it ever did.

Chris, if I were you I'd get that exorcism arranged ASAP ! I'd probably also fill the radiator with an antifreeze/holy water mixture, just in case !

I can haz Volvo V50. It had Scotch numberplates on it, so I went and got it re-regged with an NI reg. Very impressed with the chaps in Belfast, I got a new number issued with no fuss. FOUR QUID for the car park, mind. I bought the car to tidy up and sell on, but my sister (a) wants it and ( B) knows what I paid for it! Ho-hum. C'est la vie.

Whoever on here told me rubber gaskets stretch and are hard to reuse, points to you. Splashed out £16 on a new rubber rocker/cam cover gasket and the difference is vast. The new one is noticeably shorter and nothing like as soft and flexible. I feel daft for trying to reuse the old one now, I've wasted a lot of time, effort and oil.

Gave the 18 a wash before the epic shite collection tomorrow

Bit of a grinding noise from a wheel bearing or driveshaft but I've just paid for some AA cover so not worried.

Hopefully no issues though - and finally got a cassette to aux thing.

My Focus is still having starting problems even after spending £500 on a new fuel pump and it's making a slight humming noise now too, so i took it back to the diesel specialists, it now turns out that the alternator bearings are going hence the noise and that the starter motor is also on it's way out now, apparently when the pump goes the starter has to work harder meaning it draws up more power, now that the pumps fixed it still drawing up too much power and taking the power away from the rest of the engine.

I've not heard that before but there was another Focus there also with the exactly same issues, he said they all suffer from it?.

I would drive it to a scrap yard and clearly point out its future if it isn't going to behave.

Failing that a stake through the oil filter at a crossroads on a moonless night is meant to work*

Have a spare oil filter with you (and oil)

Sounds like you want to get rid of that Focus trigger it sounds like a right pain in the arse. I can tolerate unreliability in my old cars to an extent but with my more modern daily's I want to burn them to the ground the minute they start playing up.

That's just how I feel! I got in it tonight and now the LED driver display has stopped working again, it just lights up but the mileage and info is missing.

The trouble is I can't afford to change it and it is a nice car when it's not broken, I wouldn't mind so much if it was old or high mileage but it's neither, fortunately the Acclaims running well to make up for it!

serviced the xsara today. Sparks, air,oil and fuel filter. Used my new 16l drain tub as recommended on here. It was mega excellent, not a single drop on the floor. Total cost was 38 quid which is a bit of a bargain.

I took all the plastic engine covers off. Do these actually do anything? Or can i leave em off.

To celebrate i tidied my garage. Swept it and everyfink. Now need to save a few pennies to get Scooters triumph shipped here
