I got to work today removing some parts from my scrapper Citroen XM. My beady eye was drawn to the substantial looking towbar, my road going XM doesn't have one and I recon it's going to be a real towing weapon when I finally get one fitted.

Anyway, the bolts were seized so I opted to chop it off with a disc cutter. It was only then that I found that the towbar was terminally rotten and had been repaired with fibreglass and filler!

My disappointment was more than canceled out by the removal of the nearly new front strut tops, which are made of solid 100% unobtainium.

The hulk is currently propped up on it's suspension via a few bits of metal wedged into the rear trailing arms and the front struts resting on a convenient part of the inner wings. I'm sure it's perfectly safe*

Geep . It's not water in the fuel is it ? Iirc they like to rust out the filler tube and contaminate the fuel

I don't think so twosmoke, though you never know with the rain we've had recently! It's done it from time to time since I've had it, like fuel starvation where it will idle but touch the throttle and it dies. Gentle pressure on throttle increasing revs slowly and will rev high as you want, just not with a moderate to wide open throttle. I had the tank out a while ago when i replaced the tank guard and filler pipe seemed ok but will look again. I want to replace the replacement rubber fuel hoses front to back with some kunifer ones and it's had a new fuel filter and general service stuff so may bite the bullet and get it all done and looked over.

After market MAF sensors. World of pain or ok? Anyone any experience?

Checked the bosch maf shop and it's too old to be listed so is a £40 jobbie going to cause all sorts of problems?

I usually try and use Bosch but have used cambierre (sp?) and fuelparts ones in the past with no problems.

Just spent another couple of hundred on an exhaust for the R2087. It is turning into a bit of a money pit what with 250 for the rad overhaul as well. I just need a hood and some planks of wood to make the load bay floor and it is done. At least it is running beautifully now I have changed the carb base gaskets. In other news it looks like my C3 Pluriel is going to meet it's maker before too long. It's up for 700 including 6 months tax and test which should be a steal considering its just had cam belt etc. Unfortunately the ebay community don't see it that way so time to break it as I need a lump for a C4

Cheers, might ask at my motor factors, see what they can offer rather than chance it on ebay.

I spent some more time on the Cortina this afternoon, It's about as stripped as I can get it now but it wasn't much fun.

The chrome trim at the base of the vinyl roof on the C post bolts on from the inside of the boot and you need to have arms like Mr Tickle to undo the bolts, the chrome weatherstrips on the door are meant to pull off but mine aren't lifting off and i was worried about snapping them so that will be a job for the body shop and one of the door handles fell to pieces when i removed it.

On the plus side the bastard rear overrider came off in the end with a socket, pair of mole grip and a racket on the outside, along with the skin off my knuckles...

This was how i left it the other day.

Looks a bit grotty now the chrome trims been removed.

Untouched door membrane which is impressive for a 40 year old car.

This is one of the reasons I'm painting the car, like I say, it's a 20 yard motor.

Got the daily MOTd yesterday, a pass with no advisories which you would expect from a 7 year old Seat which I have tenderly cared for since new.

Nice to have the tester say "you obviously look after it, most folk don't these days". How true.

Megalolz at Indian gent who came in to get tyres for his new 20 inch wheels for his year old 5 series. Wasn't prepared to shell out for a decent make, ended up insisting they track him down some cheap part worns. He just spent three grand on the wheels FFS!

To their credit, the garage turned him away as they weren't prepared to do that. Can't understand some people. Bet the car looks awesome on 20's as it spins off the next roundabout into a bus stop of Nuns carrying baskets of kittens

Seems quite straight-forward to me - the wheels (and the car) were probably available on finance, whereas tyres generally aren't. I hope you helpfully pointed out that a set of the most expensive tyres in the garage would cost less than his car had depreciated in the past 3 months?

Trig, if my Amazon had been in the state your Cortina's in, I wouldn't have bothered painting it. It's held up incredibly well for an old car - has it been restored before?

Nope, never. Honestly it always looks nice in photos but up close it's not great but as you say for it's age it's remarkable really.

Me, earlier.

Dollywobbler, stop putting lead on the passenger seat just to make us think that the 2CV can go round corners.

This is a request for help, a request for any local shiters to lend me a couple of pairs of hands rebuilding a Princess for I have an audacious plan.

The red Princess I have has a ropey but repairable boot, bonnet, and four doors.  The banger I recently visited has an excellent bonnet, reasonable boot and while three of the four doors aren't great, the tops are better than those on the HLS.  So I need to try and call the banger guy now that I've arranged panel transport tomorrow before he gets cutting and welding, then I need to unbolt and strip down four doors, a boot and a bonnet.

Then speed is of the essence as I need to get the panels back and bolted on to the HLS so it's weather tight.  In the meantime it will have the holes taped up, but it's not an ideal option.  I can't very well afford to leave the car unprotected for any length of time so if I can call hands to the pump that would be super.

If this happens it will be this coming week/end, all depends on the outcome of the phone call tomorrow.

Banger is in Altrincham, but that's not the bit I need help with.  I need help with the bit at home which is near but no longer in Bolsover.  I'm pretty sure bacon and caffeine based beverages could be supplied.

RESULT.  Called the garage early doors and managed to beat the rhubarb and custard machine** so my next task is to remove and strip down the four doors on the HLS, the bonnet and the bootlid so I can give those to the banger guys in exchange for the panels on the banger Princess.  While the doors are not in superb condition, they haven't rotted on the top so repairs will be easier and being red they'll match the car they're destined for fairly well.

I am skint, but even though the chap doesn't want money for these parts I've offered him an automotive portrait which he expressed an interest in when I was there last so I get to make use of my portfolio for the first time in the real world.  I wonder if he'll ask for a picture of the banger Princess painted up?

I'm going to be busy this week.  Practically stripping and rebuilding the red Princess again and if Dad's plans of buying a spare Ohmygod come to fruition I'll be helping him to strip that too to make his better cosmetically since he's got it sorted mechanically... and then there's the full time job.  Sleep?  I don't need no stinking sleep.

I thought "beat the rhubarb and custard machine" was a euphemism for being very excited.

I seem to have caused consternation amongst my friends by putting my rusty 2CV on the market for £900. I know it's a car I've owned 'forever,' but a change is as good as a rest isn't it? I'd like to replace it with a Dyane, which is much more practical and rather stylish. I love Dyanes.

Potentially sourced a pair of good second hand inner wheel arches and inner wheel tubs for the 340, great news as it will save a massive amount of fabrication which will inevitably mean the car is on the road quicker. It might also mean I can drill out the old spot welds and spot weld them in, which again will save a lot of time.

Vulgalour, could the banger racing opening be a lead for your art work? I'm thinking maybe junior classes of racing that goes with banger racing such as autocross (?) and the such like. Not sure if they do it these days, been a long time since I went to a banger meeting but they used to have non (less) contact races as well. A day out with a deckchair, camera, notepad and pencil might yield some results at the next meeting when you show some of the pics? Mum and Dad with artwork of their prodigy in full race set up could be profitable? You could also make contacts for unobtainium for others as well so could be wins all round.
