So came back today after over 350 miles in the last 2 days. I really wanted to hate it, but I can't. VAG do make very competent products.

Smooth power delivery - especially from a diesel, flat cornering and not too crashy ride given the size of wheels+low suspension. Very surefooted and gives plenty of confidence. Seats are supportive and comfortable - even after 161k miles.

I can see why people buy them. I can't deny it, apart from the growl of a v6 and a loss of few toys, its a much better car than the Laguna - especially cornering. But then it is 4 years newer and like-for-like around £15k more expensive new.

When we got back onto the drive, it did remind us that it could grenade it at any point when it decided to give a very wobbly/rattly idle.

Well that lasted long! Damn piece of VAG shit has broken itself.

On the way back from picking my wife up from hospital too.

Any ideas?

Nah don't think so. Pretty sure this is the same problem my parents had. The last garage replaced the fuel pressure sensor which "fixed" it. Disconnecting it apparently fixed the issue.

A Google says it could be the pressure control valve (this is what I thought the garage changed, but apparently not). Which could make sense if disconnecting the sensor "fixed" it, as the sensor it probably verifying what the control valve is doing.

Just bought a headgasket kit for the Sera. It doesn't come with bolts. I hope they aren't stretch bolts that can't be reused, then...

Disconnecting the fuel pressure sensor and it runs smoothly now. Looks like it's the fuel rail pressure control valve.

Shit.  Am I right in thinking that if a car was standing outside and got struck by lightning it would be fine?

Wheras in this case the garage caught fire first and then set fire to the car.

Oh well, tracking sorted and front brakes bled.

Note also it's listing a bit, I think a spring's collapsed.

£330 for the part from Audi LOL.

Stuck the part number into eBay and got this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252238886721

Which is now bought.

However in the meantime and until it arrives, I'm going to have to get down to Devon to reclaim the Civic from my parents house...

MGB GT search looks like it'll have to be on hold until this shit is sorted :(

It runs alright with the fuel pressure sensor disconnected, however I don't know if I want to do this with a DPF. Probably won't regenerate when a fault code is active and I bet it'll clog up quicker too.

I am now the proud winner, soon to be owner of a R reg toyota celica st. Giffer owned with 10 months mot . Last mot advisories in 2008. Seems very nice . All for £370.00. My gay pug ftp'd this morning. The clip that holds the throttle cable has fell off . I shall have to get some wire and make a new one. Anyone want to purchase a gay pug at a very reasonable price. Very cheaply some may say. Pretty please.

All modernz etc

They are a lovely bit of kit.....when they work. Something seriously wrong when a rep mobile has complexity and parts prices that would have a super car owner wincing.

I talked myself out of considering buying an e46 m3* when they were floating around the £7k mark because of the price of some of the bespoke bits. But as far as I can tell modern VAG diesels can be as wallet crippling....

*I was young, and it would have been on OMG credit....

A bit of ex-shite-ment yesterday afternoon; 'Supervising' the kids in the park after school (pushing the swing whilst simultaneously trying to browse Ebay Tat, as you do) I became aware of a bit of a commotion.

Looked over and OMG! Looks like we have a runaway diseaseal! Some poor bloke's 51 plate E46 BMW.

Yh03gAu.jpg

By the time I'd trotted over it had passed peak noise 'n' smoke and was just nomming the last of it's oil before it clanked to a stop.

Gave the chap a lift home as he had no breakdown cover or owt. Would have offered him a tow, but the roffle-find Gooner didn't come with a towing eye!

Audi part prices are ridiculous. Seems a bit like Maserati using Fiat/Alfa parts but jacking up the price.

I don't know if its because it was designed to fit a massive engine in, but to give the Audi designers credit, the engine bay looks pretty easy to work in and around. Especially given its a Modern Shit. Probably helps that its mounted longitudinally which is an Audi trait.

Here is a quick tour of the engine bay...

post-20071-0-50656000-1500494943_thumb.jpg

First stop, lets look at the right side. Alternator. Nicely placed on top, with only a couple of bolts to undo, all accessible on top. Regulator easily grab-able too.

post-20071-0-09014000-1500494975_thumb.jpg

Throttle Body on top again. Looks nice and easy to get hands around to remove this when it invariably needs cleaning.

post-20071-0-62881700-1500494956_thumb.jpg

Fuel pump. Usually these are buried deep behind loads of other crap in most cars. Naturally cambelt driven.

post-20071-0-09709900-1500494952_thumb.jpg

Speaking of cambelt, access looks fine - especially as no doubt the bumper does the Audi thing of having a Service Position where you can move the whole thing forwards. They even kept the aux belt out of the way! Pretty sure its possible to get the cover off just by popping off the metal retaining clips.

post-20071-0-71891200-1500494965_thumb.jpg

On top is the injectors. This has sound deadening foam on top, but remove this and you're greeted with this. The thing I need to change is underneath the loom that you can see in the middle, at the very top of the picture

post-20071-0-33756400-1500494961_thumb.jpg

On the left is the Turbo and EGR valve. The EGR is on top. Looks straightforward to get to. This is a £400 part to replace though. Apparently the emissions "fix" has a habit of breaking them though. This car has done 161k though and never needed it cleaning. Possibly they might have finally fixed them clogging up. MAF and airfilter can be seen here too. Again easy to get to.

post-20071-0-90232600-1500494947_thumb.jpg

Finally the turbo. Still burred down there underneath the EGR, but certainly doesn't look a horrific job to get at. Especially from the bottom.

post-20071-0-02350100-1500494970_thumb.jpg

To me, especially compared to the incredibly cramped engine bays of the Laguna, Smart and Civic (or most other FWD moderns), it seems very DIY/repairable friendly. Hell I reckon if the coolant container wasn't there and wasn't an undertray you could stand in there!

Come back to me and tell me how easy that camvelt is when you find out the service mode bolts are rusted solid

It was cheaper to put aftermarket lowering springs on Old Man's A4 than it was to put OEM sport springs on it. Easier to get hold of too...

My decorating the hallway is now nearly finished. The kids break up from school on Friday so last push today to get it finished. The only problem is that the money for the carpets has been spent on my ebay celica. I believe floorboards are fashionable and trendy right now. Good job I may be looking at them for a 1 little while.

That's just modern car life isn't it?

A lot worse on VAG shit with some miles on in my experience

Also come back and report how easy the Audi is to work on when you have done the rear coolant housing gubbins on the back of the head !

Kiltox is also right about the service position - it can be a major ball ache and certainly not a ten min job
